Was assigned one of their attorneys as a public defender. Just my luck to receive one that wouldn't defend me. It was as if he was too passive. Just didn't want to argue on my behalf or at all for that matter. I went to court for disorderly conduct, domestic violence. I told him I would not plead guilty to domestic violence because my ex lied when she said I pushed her. He proceeded to to convince me to accept a plea bargain assuring me that it was only for disorderly conduct as I did punch my truck. I agreed because he assured me that domestic violence was not going to be charged, just the disorderly conduct. Once I accepted the no contest plea I was given 16 months probation and ordered to attend domestic violence counseling. When I started to protest my attorney told me not to interrupt the judge. I wouldn't recommend this firm as far as their public defender goes. He will lie to you and you will suffer for it.

The word incompetent doesn't do him justice. He deserves negative stars. He is so careless and lazy, he could end up costing you thousands upon thousands, ON TOP of his regular billed services. He just agrees with opposing counsel without even looking things over (nevermind drawing up paperwork to support his own client). I don't know how he's still allowed to practice. In my opinion, it's malpractice. Do. Not. Hire.

**DO NOT** hire this Law Firm, they are thieves, they lie lie lie to get you to retain them using the fakest sympathy for your divorce issues and later continue to lie and rob you. My attorney Brooke Irey from this firm refused to represent me claiming I agreed to her withdrawal, however a judge has never approved that withdrawal. She got me locked out of my home that I have exclusive rights to until it sells. She risked mine and my sons lives to date by not writing up and delivering the judges orders Overall sneaky grimy shady business. All this because 7500.00 was not enought to write up a judges court order from 07/2023 according to her. That was not part of the 75000.00 She got me locked out of my home that I have exclusive rights to until it sells. I will be pressing Tresspassing charges on all parties involved.

I hired Charles for my divorce and although my divorce was finalized pretty quickly, I am very unhappy with how things went. He confused me on two separate occasions with a different client, with one time having an entire conversation about 'going to court' before realizing he had the wrong person. My documents written were too vague and had to hire an additional lawyer to write an addendum upon hearing that my divorce was finalized. I was very dissatisfied with how things went and am very disappointed with how much money I spent on mediocre service.

I was working with Karen M Burns from February to April 28, 2020. She has ghosted me and the case, that she sent a demand letter for. I last spoke with her on April 28 and it is July 7th and she has not returned any of my calls (I call weekly) and has not returned any of my 16 emails. I have received no explanation, her receptionists say they just saw her a few days ago, and she's never expressed any doubts in taking the case. We are now hearing back from the opposing party but Miss Burns has ruined the case as she will not communicate.

Hired attorney Karen Burns on October 23,2018. The firm is called Burns Iwuji, PLLC. I was searching for an attorney and found them on, Fathers Rights in Texas website. My mother first spoke with attorney Burns on September 2018, which was I’m assuming the free consultation. My mother met with attorney Iwuji and was charged a consultation fee which was odd because my mother clearly stated she was there to hire them. I did google the firm before we met and at that time they had great reviews. However, both of this attorney will charge for possibly everything they can. Even the air you breath if possible. Attorney Iwuji mentioned that a portal was going to be set up. This was the way of us communicating with the firm and keeping up with charges incurred. The portal was set up a month after we hired them. I never received and invoice from them until June 2019 asking for more money because we had no more funds. First court date was scheduled for Dec; 2018 it was rescheduled. Second court date 2/26/2019, judge gave the mother more time to hire and atty. I was before the judge no more than 5 minutes yet I was charged 2 hrs. Third court date 3/14/2019 we were there maybe 45 minutes I was charged for another 2 hrs. Attorney Burns, constantly wanted to meet to go over our case. Every time we met with her we were charged for 2 hrs. Now, keep in mind we didn’t know about the charges because up until the last time we met we hadn’t received and invoice. I would send atty Burns emails over and over again with no response. If I called the office because she wouldn’t reply and spoke them for like literally 2-3 minutes I was charged $30. I have plenty of proof to show how incompetent this attorney was. Absolutely nothing was accomplished. My daughter is still in an abuse home. I lost money and time form work. I believed and trusted attorney Burns. Now, I truly believe this firm was a RIP off. Unfortunately, I can’t say to do your research before hiring anyone because I did. I lost thousands of dollars and I’ve also lost hope in the justice system. I pray to God every day that he keeps my daughter safe. *We hired them to have a court ordered already in place be modified. (atty made an agreement w/the mother for extended time from March –June 2019) *I have several police reports on mother for not showing up to pick up my daughter. *I have police reports and videos of mother showing up an hour late to drop off or to pick up my daughter. *I have pictures of the physical abuse *Mother was ordered to change last name on my daughter it’s been 3 years and it hasn’t been done yet. *Mother has long history with CPS. *And the list goes on and on. Samantha Sue Elledge was the worst thing to happen to my emergency custody case. She was appointed by our judge. Elledge told my children they were lying about physical abuse by their father even though he was convicted of the exact crimes they told her about. She told our judge that dad should have unsupervised visitation even with DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ASSAULT CONVICTIONS FOR HITTING MY CHILDREN. This goes against Arizona state statute. We are currently in court AGAIN less than 2 years because he held my children hostage and caused $1100 in property damage and is charged with MORE domestic violence. All because Samantha Sue Elledge called myself and my children liars. You do not want her on your case if there is domestic violence involved. What a disgrace to everyone involved.

Amy, Ms. Elledge did the same to me as a court ordered best interest attorney. I also have audio as well as emails of her helping my ex to make him appear better to the judge to take our child over proven false accusations and ignoring my ex lost custody because he abused our child when he was you younger. Please text me at 480-672-4489. Two people are better than one that have proof of who she really is. Also, Ms Elledge removes negative reviws to appear better than she is. I have screenshots of those but all were anonymous. So there are at minimum of at lease 10 others whom she has lied etc. All were women. She might as well have been working for the other side. They filed objections to everything. She agreed with all their demands. She never once advocated for me. When she was retained she agreed to travel if necessary. Then refused to travel or had “other clients” on my days in court. Even with the social investigator that the other side insisted on finding in my favor, she was unable to get custody of my son. I had to now go find and start over with competent counsel, who secured alimony but could only get me 50/50 custody even after all the abuse we had been through since it had dragged out so long. Stephanie’s office couldn’t even be bothered to hurry sending my files to the new attorney. It took 4 months. Just thinking of the high price my children and I paid emotionally is heartbreaking. If you are coming from a place of domestic abuse, do not subject yourself to more suffering. Choose anybody else.

7-10 day wait to get a phone call or email, maybe, then cancels the phone appointment you waited for, only to do more waiting and hoping as you try again. You have to beg her to pay attention to your case. Months of waiting and hoping she will take the next step or take the time to talk to you - then you get 10 minutes, maybe 15 at best (3 times over more than 7 months), then she has little to say about anything including the process. We went with her because of the claims on her website. Experience shows otherwise.

She told me she would fight my case, instead she bullied me into settling for an arrangement that I did not want, saying that I would likely lose custody if I didn't comply. It was quid quo pro, so basically she did next to nothing. If I knew this I would have never hired her!! She blamed me for not aborting my kids when I knew my ex was a horrible person. She neglected to call the motion for child support on the last court date. I had to do that on my own after the court case. Then ended up with $35 a week for two children as he had a lawyer and I did not. She lambasted me for my lifestyle and opinions. The last court date was erroneously filed as final judgement when we were supposed to come back for at least one more court date. Instead of correcting this, she concluded her services. Completely unprofessional and uncaring.

Mrs Evanko is representing my wife in a custody case, and before we decided to hire an attorney we felt the case was pretty cut and dry, but the father was constantly lying to the courts and other officials and it was becoming very frustrating to navigate the legal system while fighting his games. Attorney Evanko is a strong, dedicated, and professional attorney and she isn't letting him get away with it any more. My wife has a voice in the system now and for the first time in a very long time, things in the matter are finally progressing in a positive direction. Attorney Evanko has not only helped by representing my wife, she has also empowered her and made her feel hopeful about the outcome of the case for the first time. Attorney Evanko and her firm have very fair rates and payment plans which are so completely different from everything I have ever seen from any other attorney. She is not only an amazing attorney, but she is also quickly becoming a good personal contact for our family. I am looking into starting my JD degree in the next year or two and she is offering great advice and recommendations on working towards a legal career. Attorney Evanko is a different experience than I have ever had with any lawyers; from the very first moments we sat down with her for the consultation we could tell she was different. She is very family focused and oriented, and with her and the firm it doesn't seem like they are after money, you truly feel like they care more about helping people than getting rich. It is so comforting and reassuring to have that atmosphere to come to. Great firm and an amazing attorney. Anyone lucky enough to have Attorney Evanko represent them will quickly find out what we are talking about. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Turley is an ambulance chaser, when in court he actually made things up to say about my ex that were not true. I understand that his job was to make me look better but I don't believe in fabricating information, just to win. I ended up having to fire him because I just didn't feel like his behavior was ethical. My ex is not a bad person or a bad mother and I don't feel that it was appropriate to attack her integrity to accomplish my goals. I was really frustrated after reading some of these reviews. Leigh has been extremely supportive and encouraging during this difficult process. She is a matter of fact, tell it like it is kind of person but isn't that the kind of person you want standing up for you in court? Leigh's prices are so reasonable, I was so afraid I wouldn't be able to afford a lawyer and I prayed for a miracle. Leigh has been doing this for a long time and I am grateful for her knowledge, guidance and support. I am confident that walking into this courtroom with her by my side is the best choice I could have made.

Leigh was not reliable nor did she provide the effort you would expect when dealing with legal issues. I was very open and upfront with her regarding my case and needs as a client, but Leigh couldn't provide the same respect back. After my consultation, which I thought was comforting, I spent money immediately to retain her due to the complication of my case. Leigh showed up to every court hearing either as court checked in or had already started, which left no time to consult with her going into a hearing about expectations, needs, and facts required for judge. During the hearing, due to lack of consultation, I consistently had to try to provide input or request things on an instant before hearing would be over. After hearings is when Leigh would communicate with us, in which she charged for. After I received my first invoice, not only did she charge the incorrect rate, but she would charge for simple communication (reading and responding to my emails). Not only was her hours spent on tasks appearing to be inflated, Leigh also didn't provide a receipt for a cash transaction, then wouldn't credit the money provided to her until I gave my bank statement reflecting my atm withdrawl. She blamed "personal" reason as means to not crediting me, but I had to advise her multiple times she didn't credit me. Now comes the unethical aspect, which occurred every hearing. I'm not sure if race played a role in her character judgment, but Leigh would tell my wife and I we couldn't afford her nor the effort to fight for my rights as a father. This was the single most disrespectful and inappropriate thing I've ever been told, from someone I looked to for counsel. There was no indication of my ability to pay, when I keep my terms to our contract regarding payment. Then when asked to actually make effort to progress the case, Leigh consistently told me she couldn't do anything. Therefore it left me with no other choice but to move on from her services. BE CAUTIOUS IN RETAINING THIS ATTORNEY, she will force you to do all the footwork, legal processes, and more while she collects your money. Also, if you can't afford her suggestions, don't expect her to fight for you in your case. I believe Leigh thought she had a money case because of the high conflict I'm involved in, but she didn't expect me to be as efficient as I am in my case. Just as stated from the anonymous reviewer, they were 100% correct about Leigh. Dont believe me, theres other sites that have reviews on her as well dating back to 2009 of her poor and unethical work, in a simple Google search, which I do regret not doing before retaining her. I would highly suggest you review your invoices and contract before you make a legal decision.

This review is actually about an attorney that practices from Mr Alexander's offices, Amber J Hines. Amber represented a bankruptcy case filed 04/2018. At the very best I could say Amber represented the case adequately. I mean she was present at the meetings, but did nothing to effect the outcome of the case, good or bad. Her over lack of professionalism and due diligence were severely lacking. After all, do you want someone representing you that does the bare minimum or would you rather someone represent your case with the attention to detail you deserve? There were several instances that illustrate my disappointment with how the case was handled, but I'll just list a couple. The case had only two items of value to be accounted for, both of which were listed in the only document provided to Amber, a dissolution of marriage. However there was a "checklist " Amber provided to list assets, unfortunately, being average citizens, we didn't realize in the middle of this checklist Amber provided was a simple yes or no that would cause a list of extra problems for our case. This was, in my opinion, something that our attorney should have found through her, self described, "diligent and effective representation". She did not, and when confronted about this, Amber's reply was "well I gave you the checklist to complete, you checked the wrong box". Thank you very much, please accept this $1500 for your representation. This caused there to be yet another meeting with the trustee and an amendment having to be completed, thus throwing up a red flag to the trustee to investigate further and cause yet another meeting to occur. How did he find this "hidden" asset (worth $500 at very most and sold 18months prior to filing) but Amber did not when she was "diligently and effectively" representing the case? Her response was simple, I don't usually read through divorces". Ummm....ok. Maybe you should start, they're kind of important. Especially when it is the ONLY document to review. Amber also likes to email correspondence at close of business on a Friday. This happened multiple times. Are you trying to NOT correspond?!? One of these correspondences causes a rushed trip to the DMV to try and provide some documentation to help support the case, again after 4pm on a Friday for something that HAD to happen THAT day. Again, thanks for the heads up. Also ended up with a final invoice for $16 described as "copies and postage". I would have thought the $1500 retainer would have covered this, apparently not. Unfortunate this experience is probably the norm, but specifically concerning this attorney I'd say FAIL and to try your luck elsewhere. I will say Amber was very polite and nice, but not professional.

I hired Joy for a custody case with my ex husband, she was extremely unprofessional both with me and him. She milked the retainer and charged me enormous fees for miscellaneous items and "copies" and would want to call me in to discuss my case only to talk about herself half the time and have me repeat myself with information multiple times so she can charge me $250 and hour for consulting. I did not feel like she cared about the best interest of my children or me but was only trying to make the most money from our case.

Joy gave my spouse half truths throughout her representation, causing more animosity than necessary. She would not reply in a timely manner to cancel trials, therefore opposing counsel would devote a week or more in trial preparation. Accordingly, this tactic would raise attorney fees for opposing counsel and gave her access to opposing counsel's exhibits which Joy never filed. She would miss the exhibit deadlines. Joy would not give any indication she was canceling a trial and still never provided exhibits . I did not consult with her, but I had to choose "consulted" to submit this. If you would prefer an attorney that does not give you the full truth and charge you hourly, she's your person.

Divorce is not fun, and regardless if you are a man or women its difficult to cope with our emotions. My EX(soon to be) had a temp restraining order the night before I was leaving for a annual company meeting, it was planned as a strategy between her and her Atty, we had been married my second marriage for only 18 months and had started stealing large sums of money to boot. Anyway, I called a few Atty's not being from Mooresville I was lost, also being on other side of the US the day after I was given 20 minutes to grab belongings out of my home, I was not in best mental state. They were the only firm that listened to me story and accepted a small retainer sight unseen. They have stayed in touch the last year and as I move to Colorado for business they have been wonderful to finish things on my behalf. Patricia has a great team, July especially has been great. I would highly recommend

My appt. was for 4:30 pm and I was not seen until 5:20 pm. No apology for an almost hour delay was given. Communication of some sort - so that I could have chosen to reschedule - would have been nice. Apparently my time is of no value to her. I will continue looking for a lawyer who shows some semblance of caring. I felt that she would not be a strong advocate for me.

I had Angie simpkins as my court appointed attorney and she had no contact with me about the case whatsoever until on the day of court at the last minute. She would not return my phone calls and I had to leave multiple messages. Plus I got charged with a bogus crime and still ended up pulling jail time over it and she did nothing to try to keep me from going to jail. I have a son in high school and my mom can pass away at any minute but she didn't care about that either!

Daughter had court, Angi was her Court appointed lawyer. WISHED I could have forked over the money for a good lawyer because Angi didn't discuss anything with my daughter UNTIL the DAY OF COURT. No communication, does not care and very unprofessional. I'd give this place zero stars if I could. I'm VERY unimpressed to say the least.

I had some legal issues and Ms. Simpkins handled them. I have never been so impressed by the way this was handled. I would definitely hire her again!

Mr. White represented me in a multidisciplinary law matter, and did so with demonstrated ethics, offering reasonable options and perspectives for the end goal. Mr. White is highly personable and has excellent communication skills, as I have experienced as the client, but also witnessed in his interactions with the bench and opposing counsel. The entire staff is professional and helpful.

I hired him for a divorce. Initially paid $2000, was nice but moved slow. I did have a complicated case. He asked for another $1000 and gave him that. After $3000, years and no divorce, I found another attorney that had me divorced within months. Got no money back.

Drew did a phenomenal job with my case and achieved the best possible outcome, which I know wouldn't have been possible had I not been represented. Drew was very communicative throughout the process and provided extremely detailed notes in every invoice, so I was well aware of how my case was proceeding. The rates were fair and reasonable; I received service above and beyond what I expected.

Please listen and do not use this firm. They will rack up large bills without any quality work to support their charges and fees. In a matter of a few months I owed them close to $45,000 and had nothing to show for it. When I asked for consultation with other attorneys or advice my pleas were not followed through with. I ended up settling my own case and my ex-husband took me back to court within a few months. The entire case was a waste and very hard lesson to learn. I was completely taken advantage of.

This attorney office is God awful. They support the other side and are against low income individuals. They are obviously an organization that supports the real estate market and contributes to putting people on benefits in the street. Sharon, a lawyer there lied and said Good Cause Eviction Law wasn't good across NYS and went against Assemblyman Pat Burke's office. I called to make sure my illegal, discriminatory eviction case was closed, and at first told me it was closed, then proceeded to give me 5 outcomes and go against Pat Burke's office and NYS Division of Human Rights Bronx, NY. She then told me I supposedly had no understanding of the Good Cause Eviction Law. Sharon ought to be fired and get a job at something she is good at, not law.

Find a different law firm these guys are crooks. Phil told me he would file paternity for me if I paid $712 up front which was two hours of his time and the filing fee on May 2nd and I had until July 1st to pay the rest of the retainer. Every time I called they kept telling me they were working on it and "it will get filed". Come May 17th I got served by my ex because they never filed. They also refused to send my reply to her paperwork so I just paid for a different lawyer who has help me tremendously already. Just find a different lawyer and save yourself time and money.

Wayne has been a great lawyer and friend to me. He even took it upon himself to check on why I was on the docket on something I had not told him about and thank goodness he did. The circuit clerks office told me I had a continuance and did not tell the Judge. Everything he has told me has been spot on.

What an Adoption Lawyer Can Do for You

An adoption lawyer specializes in navigating the legal complexities of the adoption process, ensuring that the rights of all parties involved - the adoptive parents, birth parents, and the child - are protected. They assist families through the different types of adoption, such as domestic, international, foster care, stepparent, and private adoptions. Adoption lawyers ensure that the adoption process complies with state, federal, and international laws, and handle any legal issues that may arise during the process, such as terminating parental rights, conducting home studies, and finalizing the adoption.

If you're looking to adopt or if you're a birth parent considering placing your child for adoption, an adoption lawyer can guide you through the legal requirements and ensure the process goes smoothly.

When Should I Hire an Adoption Lawyer?

You should consider hiring an adoption lawyer in the following situations:

  • Private or independent adoption: If you’re adopting a child directly from the birth parents without the involvement of an adoption agency, a lawyer is essential to draft and review all legal documents, including consent forms and parental rights termination agreements.
  • Foster care adoption: If you’re adopting a child from foster care, a lawyer can help navigate the legal process, ensure the child’s eligibility for adoption, and represent you in court to finalize the adoption.
  • Stepparent or relative adoption: If you’re adopting a stepchild or a relative, a lawyer can assist in terminating the parental rights of the biological parent and ensure the adoption is completed legally and efficiently.
  • International adoption: International adoptions are complex, involving multiple layers of laws from the U.S. and the child’s birth country. A lawyer can help navigate immigration requirements and ensure compliance with international treaties like the Hague Convention.
  • Contested adoptions: If a birth parent changes their mind about the adoption or there is a dispute over parental rights, a lawyer can represent you in court and ensure that the adoption proceeds legally.
  • Adoption for same-sex couples: If you're a same-sex couple looking to adopt, a lawyer can help ensure that your adoption complies with state laws and that both parents have equal legal rights to the child.
  • Birth parent representation: If you’re a birth parent considering adoption, a lawyer can ensure that your rights are protected, help you understand the legal implications of terminating parental rights, and ensure that your decision is legally sound.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help avoid legal complications and ensure that the adoption is legally finalized as smoothly as possible.

What Does an Adoption Lawyer Do?

An adoption lawyer provides a variety of legal services, ensuring that the adoption process is completed in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing legal paperwork: Adoption lawyers handle all the necessary paperwork, including petitions to terminate parental rights, consent forms, and final adoption decrees. They ensure that the adoption is in line with state, federal, and international laws.
  • Conducting home studies: Some adoptions require a home study to evaluate the prospective adoptive family. While a social worker usually conducts the study, a lawyer can ensure that the process complies with legal requirements and that the report is submitted correctly.
  • Terminating parental rights: Lawyers assist in terminating the legal rights of the biological parents, either voluntarily through signed consent or involuntarily through court proceedings if necessary.
  • Representing clients in court: Adoption lawyers represent adoptive parents, birth parents, or other parties in court hearings to finalize the adoption or resolve disputes.
  • Navigating international adoption laws: For international adoptions, a lawyer helps ensure that all legal requirements, both in the U.S. and the child’s home country, are met, including securing the child’s visa and citizenship.
  • Providing legal advice: Adoption lawyers guide clients through each step of the adoption process, advising them on their rights and obligations, as well as any potential legal issues that may arise.
  • Drafting post-adoption agreements: In some cases, especially open adoptions, a lawyer can help draft post-adoption agreements that specify the level of contact between the adoptive and birth parents.

How Are Adoption Lawyers Paid?

Adoption lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the adoption and the time involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many adoption lawyers charge a flat fee for handling the entire adoption process. This is common for straightforward adoptions, such as stepparent or foster care adoptions, where the legal work is relatively predictable.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex adoptions, such as contested or international adoptions, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates typically ranging from $200 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: In cases where the adoption process may take longer or involve more legal work (e.g., termination of parental rights or court disputes), a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment that is billed against as the lawyer works on the case.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront, so you understand the total cost of the adoption and any additional expenses that may arise during the process.

How Much Does an Adoption Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an adoption lawyer depends on the type of adoption and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Stepparent or relative adoption: Legal fees for these types of adoptions typically range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on whether the adoption is contested or requires a court hearing.
  • Domestic private adoption: The legal fees for a private adoption usually range from $5,000 to $10,000, including drafting documents, terminating parental rights, and finalizing the adoption in court.
  • International adoption: International adoptions are generally more expensive, with legal fees ranging from $7,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the adoption and the child’s country of origin.
  • Contested adoption: If the adoption is contested and involves court disputes, legal fees may range from $10,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the length and complexity of the court proceedings.

In addition to lawyer fees, adoptive parents should also be aware of additional costs such as court filing fees, home study fees, and travel expenses (for international adoptions).

Top Questions to Ask an Adoption Lawyer

Before hiring an adoption lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and knowledge to handle your case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with adoptions?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with the specific type of adoption you’re pursuing, whether it’s domestic, international, foster care, or stepparent adoption.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or hourly rate and ask for a detailed breakdown of the costs involved in your adoption.
  3. What are the legal requirements for my adoption?
Ask the lawyer to explain the legal steps involved in your adoption and any specific requirements that may apply to your case, such as home studies or parental consent.
  4. How long will the adoption process take?
Adoption timelines can vary depending on the type of adoption, so ask the lawyer for an estimate of how long the process will take, including any potential delays.
  5. What are the common challenges in adoption cases?
Ask about any potential legal challenges that could arise during the adoption process and how the lawyer plans to address them.
  6. Will I need to go to court?
Depending on the adoption, you may need to attend court hearings. Ask the lawyer whether your presence will be required and what to expect during these hearings.
  7. Can you help with post-adoption issues?
Ask the lawyer if they can assist with any post-adoption issues, such as obtaining the child’s birth certificate, finalizing the child’s U.S. citizenship (for international adoptions), or drafting post-adoption contact agreements.

How to Check the Credibility of an Adoption Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable adoption lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no disciplinary actions on their record.
  • Look for adoption experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in adoption law and have experience handling cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on adoption cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for lawyers who are members of adoption-focused organizations like the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (AAAA), which can indicate their expertise in this field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with an adoption lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Information about the child and birth parents: Provide any available information about the child you’re adopting (e.g., age, country of origin, current living situation) and the birth parents, if applicable.
  • Adoption preferences: Be clear about the type of adoption you’re pursuing - whether it’s domestic, international, foster care, stepparent, or private - and discuss any preferences you have regarding the child’s age, background, or special needs.
  • Legal documents (if applicable): If you’ve already begun the adoption process or have signed any agreements, bring copies of all relevant legal documents, such as consent forms or agency agreements.
  • Questions about the adoption process: Prepare a list of questions about the legal steps involved in your adoption, potential timelines, and any concerns you may have about the process.
  • Financial considerations: Be ready to discuss your budget for legal fees and any additional costs, such as home studies, court fees, and travel expenses (for international adoptions).

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice for your adoption journey.
