That won't happen to me, I said. I am not of that race, nationality, or ethnicity, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I don’t practice that religion, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I’m not of that sexual orientation, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I’m not part of that income bracket, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I don’t have that disability, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, until it was physically in my face, had me backed into a corner, and was spewing utter vitriol at me. That won't happen to me, I said, he'd never lay a hand on me, until one day the physical aggression caused me physical pain and injury. That won’t happen to me, I said, until thirteen months ago, when I found myself on the phone with a domestic violence hotline. That won’t happen to me, I said, until thirteen months ago, when I found myself hurriedly packing a bag and fleeing my home, and boarding an aircraft out of state, because I feared for my life and safety. Fifty years ago, when my mother and her family escaped their war-torn country with nothing but the clothes on their backs and one bag per person due to religious persecution, I never imagined that one day, fifty years into the future, that I too would one day find myself following in her footsteps, quite literally. I never imagined that I would one day find myself fleeing my home with nothing but the clothes on my back and one small carry-on bag, and boarding a same-day aircraft bound for 1,000+ miles away, because I too feared for my life and safety. Thirteen months ago, when I found myself on the phone with a local domestic violence agency in my state, I never imagined that the proverbial door would get slammed in my face, on the basis that I earned too much money to qualify for any help or support. Since I was born and raised abroad, and with my own family still living halfway around the world, it was in that moment that I truly realized, and that it genuinely sunk in, that I was going to be completely and entirely alone in the process of escaping the cycle of violence. In 1848, divorce was practically unheard of. Most states had fault-based divorce laws outlining the requirements and criteria permitting divorce: lunacy, adultery, desertion, or cruelty. This meant that couples could only pursue divorce IF they could prove, in a court of law, that one or the other had committed one of these offenses. However, given the laws (or lack thereof) governing women's rights and freedoms at the time, divorce was far more complex for women, as they remained at risk of being unable to regain their last names, unable to retain property acquired prior to their marriage, or unable to obtain custody of their children. These fault-based grounds are in stark contrast to the no-fault system that exists across most states today. Today, after decades of tireless advocacy, and thanks to incredible attorneys like Laurie Wasserman and Virginia Yeoman, people are no longer required to remain shackled to their spouses, and have the freedom to escape the cycle of violence. Thanks to the fabulous support of Laurie and Virginia, I've not only been able to survive, but I am slowly on my way to thriving again. The words "happiness" and "divorce" are the last two words you'd expect to see in the same sentence, but that is exactly what Virginia and Laurie have facilitated for me. For anyone considering engaging the services of Laurie Wasserman and her team, from the bottom of my heart, I wholeheartedly recommend them and their entire office. They'll not only save your life, but they will also help re-unlock your door to freedom, health, independence, and joy again.

Before I hired Martha, I was working with another attorney for my divorce process, and I just didn't feel like they were on my side and looking out for my best interests. Someone referred me to Martha White, and once I met with her, I made the decision to end my retainer agreement with my current attorney and hire Martha White. Martha White listened to me and to my concerns and what I wanted out of dissolving my marriage. She was always responsive to my calls or emails and took the time to explain things to me, so that I understood all of terms and possible outcomes of this process. I feel that she helped me reach a fair settlement and I was happy with the final settlement agreement. I wish I would have hired her in the first place. She didn't drag the process out any longer than it needed to be. I was very pleased with her representation of me in my divorce case. If I ever would have another family law issue, she would be the first attorney I would contact. You can't go wrong having Martha White as your attorney.

I can’t say Thank You enough to this law firm and Eric Winnert! We live approximately 5 hours from the office and Eric came to our home to get the much needed paperwork signed by my very ill spouse for a mesothelioma law suit. Poor man had to drive through the snow belt in February just to make sure we got what was needed before anything happened. Whenever I have questions and need to contact him, he is always there to give me answers. He has walked me step by step through every part of the process as my spouse was terminal and passed. Even when I haven’t bothered him in awhile, he will shoot me a text with any needed updates on our case! He’s very caring, empathetic , and personable with his clients and their family! No matter what we threw at him he always had a smile and a chuckle while maintaining his professionalism! Great Job Eric and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you have done and continue to do for me.

Not sure why, but right from the start Beth seem annoyed and unwilling to listen to the specifics of my divorce. She suggested that I move out because abandonment doesn’t exist anymore and that I should start preparing for a huge child support payment that is inevitable and mandatory, and that my prenuptial agreement was worthless and unenforceable after 6 years of marriage. She told me that regardless of the circumstances my ex-wife will get custody and to prepare myself for that. She certainly didn’t feel like she was helping me, more like she was trying to do a little as possible to get through the case, or even make it easier for my ex to get the judgements she wants. 3 other lawyers told me very different things in their consultations. I hired a different lawyer.

A very belated review that I just realized I never left - We had a great experience with Kathleen and her office in the matter of a step-parent adoption. She was thorough in explaining the different types of step-parent adoption that could apply to our case (contested vs uncontested) and with her guidance, we were able to land on an uncontested case. She handled all the communication and paperwork with the additional parent. As this was during COVID, our hearing was held virtually, but it was a quick and easy process the whole way through. No surprises or hidden charges, and both Kathleen and her office staff were incredibly kind. Highly recommend.

I wholeheartedly recommend Kathleen McCann for anyone navigating the complexities of Family Law. We came to her with a complex question that other attorneys had not been able to handle--correcting the age of a child adopted from a foreign country--and she knew exactly what to do. Her deep knowledge and swift handling of our case significantly eased the process. Kathleen was exceptional in answering all our questions, providing clear, accessible explanations that kept us informed and confident. We swiftly resolved this worrisome matter, and we feel very grateful that we found Kathleen. We highly recommend her for any family law matter.

I recently met with Mr. Todd D. Rothlisberger, Esq. and Ms. Amber Boyd after I was contacted by the Internal Revenue Service regarding a tax issue. I was getting ready to engage a tax-resolution company to assist me when a friend of mine recommended that I speak with a law firm with tax specialists instead, as he felt that would be a better course of action. After a concise and thorough initial meeting, which instilled confidence in me as to the competency of Mr. Rothlisberger and Ms. Boyd, I engaged the firm of Poole, Brooke, and Plumlee PC to operate on my behalf. The process was detailed and professional every step of the way. Their knowledge of the IRS process, system, and indeed even the IRS Agent himself, was clear from the outset and very comforting, given my unfamiliarity with and trepidation about the situation. The best-case scenario outcome was outlined to me at the appropriate point, and that was indeed the end result. I am extremely pleased with the resolution, given the circumstances, and I will not hesitate to give this firm my full endorsement to anyone who may be in a similar situation.

I would highly recommend attorney Scott Hamblin. Mr. Hamblin was very easy to work with, explaining all my options as the case progressed. He took into consideration my priorities, what was most important to me, and skillfully negotiated them into an ideal settlement agreement. And his legal assistant, Madasyn, is such a delight to interact with.

Kelly Morgan is a very rare Attorney. He is kind, patient, a great listener, easy to communicate with, responsive and solution oriented. I reached out to Attorney Morgan after a business deal had gone awry, in search of a legal expert that could help my company. In my mind, help meant, “let’s go to court.” Attorney Morgan, however, with his calm and level-headed demeanor, talked me off the ledge with a suggestion to meet with the opposing party because of the relationship he and I have. The result of which positioned my friend and I to finish our deal and remain friends. All thanks to Attorney Morgan. Thank you, Kelly!

Wail and his staff are unlike any other! From the moment I requested an appointment, Desire was very kind, understanding and with great customer service. I was provided with an appointment the following day ( Thursday ) didn’t expect to be seen or to be helped since my court date was Monday. I had been dealing with a Domestic Violence case that was overlooked by Orange County court house in January. Not only did Wail reopen my case, but also helped me with child custody. Wail and his staff ( Jennifer, Marlene and Alex) are very knowledgeable, professional, and detailed. They were all very clear about the process and always answered any questions I had. I am forever thankful with each one of them! I had court this past Monday, 7/8 and can say Wail did help me get what he said he would. He is very professional, confident, driven and tough when needed during court hearing. I am so glad my friend Paige referred him. My case was settled and can say it exceeded my expectations!!! From getting a PFA, to the parental rights termination, to the awesome day where I got to become the legal guardian/father and adopt my precious daughter. David is a very talented lawyer, who knows the law, and he gave us confidence which made things not so stressful as well. Mr. Crosson made it look pretty easy, especially in court. While dating someone in Idaho, her ex husband hired Jake to help with enforcing a divorce decree. Jake was excellent and the woman I was dating was penalized for delaying her obligations. Two years later I am in a situation that required a very strong attorney to help me. I spoke to an associate at the firm who said Jake is going to be your best bet. Jake knew I was under a very tight deadline and managed to save me from what would have been a devastating outcome. He got me in front of the judge in record time and was able to turn the entire situation around. The favorable outcome was everything I could have hoped for. His team is very strong and it would have been a disaster for me if I hadn’t fallen into Jake’s and Jennifer ‘s (his paralegal) capable hands. I have worked with many lawyers and Jake and his team ranks among the best from my experience.

I retained Dan in a very complex child custody case, after years of multiple other attorneys that didn't help much, or had made things worse at times. We were at a loss on how to proceed and protect my child. Dan and his Team with Brandi and Autumn kept us going and helped us organize our evidence and really tell our story like we weren't able to do before. Dan is a hard working attorney and stands for protecting what's important. Throughout the process, Dan has truly fought for us, guided us, actually listened. and dispelled lies against us, and I felt like I had a good friend or family member with me fighting in the trenches for my family. Neda has assisted me with two real estate transactions. The first was unsuccessful. The seller’s attorney was incredibly unprofessional, but Neda dealt with the situation with utmost professionalism. The second was successful and I love my new home, but the seller’s attorney and the title company were both difficult. Neda handled each with tenacity and finesse. In communication with me she assured me that, while frustrating, nothing was too far out of the ordinary in the world of real estate closings. Terrible experience with Sarah particularly. My coparent withheld my ability to see my infant on multiple occasions, Sarah charged me for documentation that didn’t improve or remedy the situation; the coparent was not held accountable whatsoever. The response I received from filing the expensive paperwork Sarah’s firm advised was my coparent filing a false police report saying their vehicle was broken into implicating me for which I had proofs were 100% false (the vehicle was NOT broken into or tampered with and I was nowhere remotely close to area it was located at the time in question). I was required to meet at police stations following that accusation - know what the coparent showed up in?? The undamaged vehicle in question on the DAY FOLLOWING the accusation. (For the record, it’s supposed to be a crime in Texas to file a false police report). Again, none of it mattered when we *never made it to court* — saddled with $25k worth of representation debt (when the standard for family court settlements is ~$11k to my understanding), a hefty child support amount, and ONE day more than a standard possession as a non-custodial parent. I wrote her an angry, frustrated “who do you work for here?” email to which she felt the need to call me personally at 3 am having me tell her I thought she was the perfect person to help me with my situation or she would be resigning my case. Should’ve dropped her then and there. I’m an honorably discharged veteran, a former federal employee, an Eagle Scout, etc. I was up against someone with a an assault record. Continuously told her firm I wanted a 50/50 coparenting agreement and wasn’t trying to skirt child support because I didn’t think it would help my case. Not what was presented at the 2-3 court days we were supposed to have, I took off work for and made special arrangements for but didn’t actually “take.” We never made it to court - ended up in mediation with a RETIRED judge who didn’t read or pay any attention to the facts of the case whatsoever as his blanketed opening statement at mediation was - “I don’t care what the facts are here, I’m not taking any child away from his mother short of something drug related” - a determination based solely based on gender/sex. I did 90% of the talking during mediation; Sarah and her assistant sat there and barely spoke. I’m not an attorney. I didn’t get paid $25k to represent someone. Had no idea what I was doing. Sarah worked with the coparent’s attorney and came up with a 30+ page document that provides more coverage for my co-parent than me and I was billed for it; co-parent walked away from the case on a pro-bono basis. If I mess up, jail time and fines. If the co-parent messes up, there would be hefty court fees for me to enforce anything and then next to 0 repercussions for them. My coparent has been so empowered by how easy it was to walk over me that she has continued to violate the agreement (never missed a day with my son, coparent’s missed a plethora; coparent doesn’t send written updates when our circumstances change, I’ve had to; coparent moved outside the agreed upon living area, repercussions are supposed to be me becoming custodial, NOPE; coparent filed 2 more false police reports since implicating but not naming me to avoid harassment charges, nothing stopping them). If you’re a single father out there for any reason and are looking for help, know upfront no one (courts, attorneys, etc) cares about the dad’s rights or involvement in a child’s life. Since the resolution, I’ve struggled to make ends meet between the debts and my obligations. Think when I’m struggling to this degree that I can afford or would even bother going back to court to have my coparent “held accountable” for the violations?? Steer clear of Sarah’s firm; felt massively overcharged for the minimal support or intervention I received from them.

I have been with Sawer & Sackel for 3 separate workers comp claims and have been very unsatisfied until recently. Up until Holly took ownership in my cases I was left wondering what was going on. I was the one that had to initiate any and all inquiries into correspondences from the insurance carrier. And I rarely spoke with a lawyer and it was Never the same individual. Since working with Holly things have change my thinking entirely. She has taken ownership in my case and has gone above and beyond my expectations (or at least what my expectations of a law firm should be) and have reaffirmed my choice in a workers compensation law firm. Holly will initiate and follow up on all inquiries and respond in a timely manner. I have enjoyed working with her and look forward to a positive outcome in my pending cases.

I’ve been with Sawers & Sackel for a few months. From day one, they have been professional and answered all of my questions. Going through this process has been difficult. During a phone call, Holly was so supportive. A few days later, I received a letter from Holly, with handwritten encouragement from her! It brought me to tears. I’ve never heard of a law firm that cares this much, to not only work diligently on my behalf but to take an interest in me personally. Bill and Julie have also been so supportive to me I would recommend Sawers & Sackel to anyone!!

I am currently in the process of filing multiple complaints against this law firm with the SC Bar Association and have retained a malpractice attorney to hold these horrible people accountable. Not only is Daryn Barker the most incompetent, unethical, lazy, and immoral “attorney” I could have ever fathomed in a thousand lifetimes but she is a truly horribly human being as well. She served me and my children up on a silver platter to our abusers and it cost us nothing less than everything.

If you value your children's safety and well-being and/or your life savings, do NOT hire this woman! Incompetent does not even come close to describing my experience with this firm. They cost me everything. It felt as if they were personally trying to destroy me, the exact opposite of what I hired her to do. I recommend anyone RUN as far away from this firm as possible. But if your opposing party has retained her, you will have nothing to fear!

Retained this law firm for a custody issue and initially I thought that I had found "the firm/lawyer". From the intake to the first few conversations I felt that I had not only found a firm that I could trust but someone that understood but little did I know I was making a horrendous financial decision. While I was told from the beginning that my case would take some time the issue did not lie there it was specifically the spending of $21k+ and never stepped foot in a courtroom, nor have any mediation, and simply my situation remains the same . When I would ask questions I was made to feel as if I should not be asking them being that I was told certain things could/could not occur as it related to my case from the beginning. My point to the firm and lawyer(s) is the money that I am spending, and the case is/or was not moving was beyond frustrating. To add wit, when I asked for an agreement to just be typed vice being represented, I was given a quote of $2500 to draft a custody agreement outside of the monies that I had already spent with this firm. Needless, to say I requested that they remove themselves from the case and guess what? Invoices continued to roll in, in which I paid. I received a closure letter from this firm on 07/21/2024 and received an invoice today 07/24/2024 smh. While I cannot take away how they may have helped others that simply did not occur with me. My dealings with this firm has left a bad taste in my mouth as it pertains to lawyers and will most certainly make me think three times about hiring any other lawyer. I cannot and would not recommend this firm to anyone based off what I experienced. **In response to the below** All information that I provided for my case and specifically, my son's mother was accurate! Again understanding that I resided 3+ hours away from the other party was told from the jump while respecting the client attorney privilege I'm not going to go in great detail however, this review was to give my experience and leave a review based off such. As stated you all may have helped others however, my experience was not such. To respond as if it was my fault that I spent the whooping amount with this firm affirms why I feel the way I do. I hope that this review allows others to weigh their options thoroughly and consider all reviews whether positive or negative when choosing legal representation

We contacted Washington Law Offices to handle an issue of inhabitability due to a pest infestation issue. Attorney Washington was responsive, compassionate and keenly aware of our legal rights in this situation under Illinois law. After assessing the situation, she drafted a demand letter within days and positioned us to successfully move out without any legal repercussion or retaliation from the property management company. I would highly recommend her services as she is extremely well suited to represent in the realm of tenant/property management disputes.

Wade Law Group’s handling of my business partnership dispute was a disaster from start to finish. I sought their help when I was being pushed out and needed to recover my equity. Despite providing all the necessary documentation upfront, including the operating agreement and financial statements, their incompetence quickly became apparent. For seven weeks, my attorney at Wade Law Group engaged in fruitless exchanges, sending threatening letters based on California law and drafting a lawsuit complaint. Only after all this time did I discover that my attorney hadn’t even read the operating agreement—a crucial document in any partnership dispute. This neglect led us to almost violate the agreement by bypassing mandatory mediation and filing the lawsuit in the wrong state. Predictably, my former business partner exploited these errors, leaving me with a much weakened case and a significant financial loss. After incurring over five figures in legal fees, I made the decision to terminate our relationship. I requested a meeting to discuss the situation, but my attorney not only ignored my request but also responded rudely when I followed up. Eventually, the firm’s owner reached out and offered a partial refund for drafting the complaint in the wrong state. However, the amount he offered was far less than what I had actually been billed, forcing me to go line by line through the invoices and finding the correct amount was five times higher than what he claimed. I then posted a review of my experience on Yelp, and the owner reached out and offered me a full refund of over $8K in exchange for removing the review and signing a contract agreeing not to post additional reviews about my experience with the firm. When I pointed out that this felt unethical and possibly illegal and proposed that I edit the review to give credit for the refund, he withdrew the offer, falsely claiming that I had rejected it.

These people are rude. And they can't read. I set up a consultation with them, but they canceled before even talking to me and told me that my trial is in three weeks when it's not. They didn't read anything about it, have the nerve to not even meet with me or have a discussion, followed with "best of luck on everything" which is just more insulting, absolutely insulting. i am sorry I called.

Matt Wolfberg has been our attorney since 1977 when we closed on our house. He was outstanding then and has remained so over the past 47 years. He has written and revised our wills, defended us in traffic court, and has provided sage advice for a range of legal matters. Most recently, he was our attorney for the sale of house that we bought in 1977. As always, Matt was knowledgeable, competent, attentive to detail, and patient. Highly recommended!

What an Adoption Lawyer Can Do for You

An adoption lawyer specializes in navigating the legal complexities of the adoption process, ensuring that the rights of all parties involved - the adoptive parents, birth parents, and the child - are protected. They assist families through the different types of adoption, such as domestic, international, foster care, stepparent, and private adoptions. Adoption lawyers ensure that the adoption process complies with state, federal, and international laws, and handle any legal issues that may arise during the process, such as terminating parental rights, conducting home studies, and finalizing the adoption.

If you're looking to adopt or if you're a birth parent considering placing your child for adoption, an adoption lawyer can guide you through the legal requirements and ensure the process goes smoothly.

When Should I Hire an Adoption Lawyer?

You should consider hiring an adoption lawyer in the following situations:

  • Private or independent adoption: If you’re adopting a child directly from the birth parents without the involvement of an adoption agency, a lawyer is essential to draft and review all legal documents, including consent forms and parental rights termination agreements.
  • Foster care adoption: If you’re adopting a child from foster care, a lawyer can help navigate the legal process, ensure the child’s eligibility for adoption, and represent you in court to finalize the adoption.
  • Stepparent or relative adoption: If you’re adopting a stepchild or a relative, a lawyer can assist in terminating the parental rights of the biological parent and ensure the adoption is completed legally and efficiently.
  • International adoption: International adoptions are complex, involving multiple layers of laws from the U.S. and the child’s birth country. A lawyer can help navigate immigration requirements and ensure compliance with international treaties like the Hague Convention.
  • Contested adoptions: If a birth parent changes their mind about the adoption or there is a dispute over parental rights, a lawyer can represent you in court and ensure that the adoption proceeds legally.
  • Adoption for same-sex couples: If you're a same-sex couple looking to adopt, a lawyer can help ensure that your adoption complies with state laws and that both parents have equal legal rights to the child.
  • Birth parent representation: If you’re a birth parent considering adoption, a lawyer can ensure that your rights are protected, help you understand the legal implications of terminating parental rights, and ensure that your decision is legally sound.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help avoid legal complications and ensure that the adoption is legally finalized as smoothly as possible.

What Does an Adoption Lawyer Do?

An adoption lawyer provides a variety of legal services, ensuring that the adoption process is completed in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing legal paperwork: Adoption lawyers handle all the necessary paperwork, including petitions to terminate parental rights, consent forms, and final adoption decrees. They ensure that the adoption is in line with state, federal, and international laws.
  • Conducting home studies: Some adoptions require a home study to evaluate the prospective adoptive family. While a social worker usually conducts the study, a lawyer can ensure that the process complies with legal requirements and that the report is submitted correctly.
  • Terminating parental rights: Lawyers assist in terminating the legal rights of the biological parents, either voluntarily through signed consent or involuntarily through court proceedings if necessary.
  • Representing clients in court: Adoption lawyers represent adoptive parents, birth parents, or other parties in court hearings to finalize the adoption or resolve disputes.
  • Navigating international adoption laws: For international adoptions, a lawyer helps ensure that all legal requirements, both in the U.S. and the child’s home country, are met, including securing the child’s visa and citizenship.
  • Providing legal advice: Adoption lawyers guide clients through each step of the adoption process, advising them on their rights and obligations, as well as any potential legal issues that may arise.
  • Drafting post-adoption agreements: In some cases, especially open adoptions, a lawyer can help draft post-adoption agreements that specify the level of contact between the adoptive and birth parents.

How Are Adoption Lawyers Paid?

Adoption lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the adoption and the time involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many adoption lawyers charge a flat fee for handling the entire adoption process. This is common for straightforward adoptions, such as stepparent or foster care adoptions, where the legal work is relatively predictable.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex adoptions, such as contested or international adoptions, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates typically ranging from $200 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: In cases where the adoption process may take longer or involve more legal work (e.g., termination of parental rights or court disputes), a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment that is billed against as the lawyer works on the case.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront, so you understand the total cost of the adoption and any additional expenses that may arise during the process.

How Much Does an Adoption Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an adoption lawyer depends on the type of adoption and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Stepparent or relative adoption: Legal fees for these types of adoptions typically range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on whether the adoption is contested or requires a court hearing.
  • Domestic private adoption: The legal fees for a private adoption usually range from $5,000 to $10,000, including drafting documents, terminating parental rights, and finalizing the adoption in court.
  • International adoption: International adoptions are generally more expensive, with legal fees ranging from $7,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the adoption and the child’s country of origin.
  • Contested adoption: If the adoption is contested and involves court disputes, legal fees may range from $10,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the length and complexity of the court proceedings.

In addition to lawyer fees, adoptive parents should also be aware of additional costs such as court filing fees, home study fees, and travel expenses (for international adoptions).

Top Questions to Ask an Adoption Lawyer

Before hiring an adoption lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and knowledge to handle your case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with adoptions?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with the specific type of adoption you’re pursuing, whether it’s domestic, international, foster care, or stepparent adoption.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or hourly rate and ask for a detailed breakdown of the costs involved in your adoption.
  3. What are the legal requirements for my adoption?
Ask the lawyer to explain the legal steps involved in your adoption and any specific requirements that may apply to your case, such as home studies or parental consent.
  4. How long will the adoption process take?
Adoption timelines can vary depending on the type of adoption, so ask the lawyer for an estimate of how long the process will take, including any potential delays.
  5. What are the common challenges in adoption cases?
Ask about any potential legal challenges that could arise during the adoption process and how the lawyer plans to address them.
  6. Will I need to go to court?
Depending on the adoption, you may need to attend court hearings. Ask the lawyer whether your presence will be required and what to expect during these hearings.
  7. Can you help with post-adoption issues?
Ask the lawyer if they can assist with any post-adoption issues, such as obtaining the child’s birth certificate, finalizing the child’s U.S. citizenship (for international adoptions), or drafting post-adoption contact agreements.

How to Check the Credibility of an Adoption Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable adoption lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no disciplinary actions on their record.
  • Look for adoption experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in adoption law and have experience handling cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on adoption cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for lawyers who are members of adoption-focused organizations like the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (AAAA), which can indicate their expertise in this field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with an adoption lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Information about the child and birth parents: Provide any available information about the child you’re adopting (e.g., age, country of origin, current living situation) and the birth parents, if applicable.
  • Adoption preferences: Be clear about the type of adoption you’re pursuing - whether it’s domestic, international, foster care, stepparent, or private - and discuss any preferences you have regarding the child’s age, background, or special needs.
  • Legal documents (if applicable): If you’ve already begun the adoption process or have signed any agreements, bring copies of all relevant legal documents, such as consent forms or agency agreements.
  • Questions about the adoption process: Prepare a list of questions about the legal steps involved in your adoption, potential timelines, and any concerns you may have about the process.
  • Financial considerations: Be ready to discuss your budget for legal fees and any additional costs, such as home studies, court fees, and travel expenses (for international adoptions).

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice for your adoption journey.
