I was a government relations intern at CIMA for about 5-6 months. I consider it the most valuable professional experience I've had out of about 5 total internships. What's sets this opportunity apart is the level of independence and variety of tasks. Everyday I did something new: from policy research and analysis to legislative tracking, I was never bored. Most importantly, Louie allowed us to work with very limited oversight. I think this allows for a mutual respect and rapport to develop between interns and supervisors. This is very a much a hands on learning experience - you will begin working on complex projects right away on your first day. You will obviously be given instructions and insight, but you will be expected to work fairly independently - which simulates what a real full-time job will be like. I want to emphasize how much I appreciate and respect the staff at CIMA. Louie (who leads the government relations department) is an excellent leader and I consider him a mentor and friend. I am very grateful for having the opportunity to work with him and all the other interns here at CIMA. I would recommend this position and this organization to anyone. You will receive quality leadership and will gain invaluable insight into the government relations industry. I will also add that in my experience, a few of the interns even landed full-time jobs by connecting and networking with various offices and organizations that do business with CIMA. My time as an intern was incredible. I was able to hone my skills as well as learn new ones and I enjoyed getting first hand experience in things with minimum direction so as to make it my own. The little direction also further drove my motivation and determination to meet deadlines and goals of quality work. The varied projects throughout the days encourage a range of interests or skills to be acquired that are beneficial if you're thinking about going further with the field, as well. Everyone is very friendly and willing to help; Mr. Lujan is also great to work for - he doesn't just provide you with answers, he provides a path for you to learn the answers on your own, which as an attorney or government affairs specialist/analyst, is a trait you definitely want.

Working as an intern here has been has been an enlightening experience. I have learned how to switch from being a student to being a professional.
