I came to Renee after my friend had recommended her to me. My ex-wife refused to let me see my daughter and I was not going in the direction I wanted to in the court system. At the outset, Renee was extremely helpful, diligent and eager to help me get custody of my daughter. After a short period of time with her representing me, I now have custody of my daughter and will be going back to court with Renee to get more time. Renee's fee structure is also reasonable given her experience in this area of law. I am very happy with Renee and the work she has done for me.

Because of a lack of care and quality in her work I have been the subject of ongoing domestic and legal abuse since I hired her. She was relentless about billing, even when I was homeless. Stay away.

I hired Ms. Marcelle. In 7 weeks I was billed $41K. Ms. Marcelle's approach to my case was to be on offensive, but I believe deescalation, and mediation would have been a far more successful, and less costly approach. She did not refer me to collaterals, such as accountant, forensic evaluator, parenting educator, or child therapist, although the other party had been referred to these collaterals by their attorney, and both parties had been ordered to parenting education. I did not feel Ms. Marcelle was emotionally supportive towards me the client, my family, or proposed solutions to address the emotional needs of my children (such as child therapy). She did not inquire about their daily schedule, which was important an important factor in deciding the custodial schedule. Ms. Marcelle did not make a motion to request attorney's fees from the more monied party. A subsequent attorney filed such a motion, and I was award all fees. Ms. Marcelle did file papers timely, did return calls, and did show up in court when she was supposed to, but otherwise it is important for the client and the attorney they hire to mesh well, as a team. I did not feel this was the case in my situation.

Attorney John Kakinuki tremendously helped me with my divorce proceedings. He said divorce wasn’t his specialty but mine was an international marriage and he is expert in international work and was recommended by mutual friends in our church, so he worked hard to make sure everything went right. He provided me with excellent service. He gave me a lot of professional advised as to how and what I should expect from the court. He is very very professional, very knowledgeable. I was so impressed by his work ethics. My case went quick and smoothly because he paid attention to all the details and paperwork’s required by the court. Honestly at that time I don’t care about anything. Divorce was a nightmare for me. All I know is I just want it done and get over it. Even today when I should forget the proceedings. I still recall how Attorney John Kakinuki treated my case very well. He gained my respect and admiration because he was not only there to represent but he also gave me emotionally support and I felt it. He is such a great lawyer with integrity and a big heart. If you need legal advice or question I will definitely, highly recommend Attorney John Kakinuki and you will not regret it.

I was referred to John Kakinuki by a  former colleague from the Baker & Mackenzie law firm. He was recommended as a professional with great integrity and an impressive history of experience in litigation and Intellectual Property both in the US and in Japan. Even though my case was not related to intellectual property, John Kakinuki agreed to meet me and advise me about a case in Japan involving my family. From the very first meeting, I was impressed by his compassion and sense of justice as he provided me valuable advice at no charge.  Mr. Kakinuki demonstrated a profound knowledge of the Japanese justice system and Japanese lawyers' work ethics. He speaks with the confidence of many years of professional experience with litigation in Japan and in the US. John Kakinuki reached out to his network of law professionals in Japan and procured a Japanese lawyer that spoke English and was willing to work for my family (who actually lives in Brazil). This was an enoumous help given the fact that the majority of Japanese lawyers will not work for foreigners. Mr. Kakinuki kindly initiated our first contact with the lawyer in Japan and helped us get started with our case.  I would highly recommend John Kakinuki as a lawyer. He is an impressive litigator who presents arguments and facts based on knowledge and experience when giving advice. I have great respect and admiration for his professionalism.

Molly Jacobson assisted me with my estate planning. After my husband and I purchased a home and had our first child, we needed to get all of our affairs in order. She was extremely informative and efficient throughout the entire process. She was also incredibly responsive to all of our questions, phone calls and emails. I would highly recommend Ms. Jacobson.

When my wife and I found our son in very grave legal jeopardy, we consulted with and hired Bob. During this extremely difficult time for our entire family, Bob's pragmatic, thoughtful approach kept us updated, cautiously hopeful, and grounded in the fact that we have someone who genuinely cares about our son's fate and who is also strategic and skilled at maneuvering through the evolving dynamics of a very complicated case. We were particularly grateful to Bob for remaining accessible and easy to talk to during this entire ordeal, especially under the most direst of developments and dynamics. The outcome of this dark chapter in our family's history exceeded our expectations, and we are forever grateful to Bob. We can't recommend him high enough for anyone looking for legal council.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Rafael, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
