I hired Dorothy for a fairly complex child custody case that was beyond the capabilities of another attorney that I had previously hired. Dorothy took the time to understand the issues, and when it came time for court she was extremely well organized and prepared. If you are in the unfortunate position of needing a family law attorney, hire Dorothy. She is not cheap, but you will get what you pay for.

She was my lawyer for custody. She was a little pricier than others but I didn't have alot of choice and she seemed like a good fit. I didn't get her the documentation she had asked of me. She still went into court and absolutely amazed me. I was nervous going on, I've never been to court, and this is custody of my child so of course. If I ever walk in a court room with her by my side again ill walk in with high confidence in her. She did great at addressing concerns and excellent at catching him in lies and during times he would go back on something he said prior because he had already forgotten an answer he told ealrier. Some I didn't even notice at first and when she called them out i kept thinking how I couldn't have picked a better lawyer. If her price doubles, I'll still pay it!!

I had lost my children in a custody case and began the huge fight to get them back. This has been a 7 year battle. I went through 3 attorneys each one more inept then the previous. I was getting great at firing attorneys. Found Margaret...it was the best find of my life. She had only been on the case 3 months and accomplished more in those 3 months then all the others. Plain and simple she does her job and takes it serious. She comes to court prepared and with a clear game plan. She knew the case upside down and backwards. I grew very tired of the court system and it's workings. With her I am finally getting my children back. If you are considering hiring her stop your search and sign on, it will be the best move you will have made. I wish I was allowed to post my name and number so I can actually give you a personal review. She goes beyond the norm!

Mr Wiseley went far and beyond the call to take care of my husbands issues and was quick and accurate!. He wasted no time helping us and was successful at getting my husband rights restored when others said it could not be done. He also helped my daughter who was in a car accident. Will not use anyone else ever. He is extraordinary and super knowledgeable.

I would like to say that Jenna Foreman is by far the best experience I have had with an attorney. I had previously had an attorney on my case who done absolutely nothing but give me and my family the run around while I was trying to get my son from an abusive situation. I could hardly ever contact him and had to have people call from different numbers for him to pick up. 4 months and he done nothing but take almost 3k. I was recommended to Kennedy law firm and I at this point had given up faith in the legal system. However this is where things changed immediately. Jenna Foreman was my attorney and this was the best example of a professional if you have never seen one. She always and I mean always returned my calls in a reasonable time. Jenna stayed in contact Via email or phone. I knew every phase of the process and Jenna Foreman got started around thanksgiving and my son was home with his family by Christmas.Special thank you to Jenna Foreman. I will tell anyone and everyone, if you need an attorney I sincerely recommend Jenna Foreman.

Recently, I hired another attorney and they were fine, however, family law was all that they could handle. Mr Bellmer was able to handle criminal as well as family law, because domestic violence was used. His ability to move back and forth through different courts amazed me just how he could keep up with all of it along with his many other clients. Regarding me, he had a mountain of STUFF to overcome even with me interrupting him, he was still able to methodically and systematically overcome everything the opposing lawyer accused me of. Currently, he has righted my ship and now I personally feel that I am in a position to win. I would like to add that I am innocent, so justice will prevail. If you are guilty, then there is not much any attorney can do for you except get you a lesser sentence or sanction.

Tim was very concise and detailed witht he information he provided us with regards to our child custody case. We have found most attorneys either are available all the time and don't know what they are talking about, or they are not available all the time, but know what they are talking about. Tim was the latter. Although busy, he was able to get back to us on important matters when they needed addressed. He was there well before meetings and was prepared to discuss the information and any questions we had in detail. As far as we could tell, he practiced general law and said he could help us write a new will as we discussed we were planning on updating it. We will most definitely be using him for this.

Paul knows his stuff I am currently battling for joint physical custody of my daughter and everything is working out beautifully. The judge did not like the hours I was working so Paul says you know joint physical custody does not have to be based on how many overnights per year you have your child if you can go on 3rd shift I can get you your daughter every day of the week. Low and behold I get on third shift and the court order state that me and the mother are supposed to use each other in lieu of a third party care provider. Well needless to say beyond my daughter being in pre k 5 days a week her mother had her daycare 5 days a week so now everything is working out extremely well and I can clearly see what is going to happen. Wilnese my daughters mother is extremely mad to the point were she is breaking the court order and not using me in lieu of a 3rd party care provider so naturally the judge is mad and its looking like I'm am absolutely getting joint physical custody 50/50 so if your asking if Paul is a good attorney yea id say he is a great attorney and I would recommend him to anyone.

I went through a very tumultuous divorce where I fired my first attorney three days after hiring him. Lawyer number two fired me a week before my custody hearing. Paul Lowe jumped on board at the last minute and guided me through a very hard fought contentious battle. He stupefied the opposing attorney with detailed and calculating maneuvers. He looked at every angle within my case and capitalized on all there mistakes. He prepared me for every question and technique the opposing side would through at me. His writing was impeccable! Every word was analyzed, crafted and massaged into place. The motions an answers were precise and cut like knife, the man is a literary ASSASSIN. Paul Lowe is the military equivalent to a SNIPER! In the end my 2nd attorney sued me and Paul Lowe systematically picked her complaint apart and then fired the head shot (We Counter Sued Her For Malpractice) to end the war. My custody battle is still on going and thankfully I have Paul Lowe guiding and maneuvering me through this difficult process. I have talked to many attorneys during the past 2.5 years and have yet to find one that will listen and respond like him. If you have a real case and want to be represented by someone that is not going to give you a line of hope and promise until all your money runs out, if you want your voice to be heard, if you want to take the fight to them you need to talk to Paul. In my short but well traveled time within the legal system I learned the hard way that if you hire the right person from the start most hurdles can be overcome and dealt with rather simply if you screw up and hire a good old boy that wants to work the system on you. Your hurdles will become mountains!

I worked with Hillary back in the mid 90's to the around 2006. She was the best attorney I have had the pleasure of working with. She is very good at what she does, and that is looking at all the facts, and doing what needs to be done for the best interests of the child. She was amazing, and very straight and to the point about every aspect of the whole custody battle. Her rates were very fair, and I was on a very tight budget and she worked with me to allow me to be able to fight for my son's rights, and my rights. She is an amazing and remarkable woman, and I have and still do recommend her many years later.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
