Attorney Haynes acted as my court appointed defense attorney. He carefully explained each proceding and kept me updated on the status of the case continuously. He was understanding and helpful. He painstakingly researched the law and several cases for precedent in the state to prepare a motion for my case and was successful in getting it dismissed. He put an incredible amount of effort into my case! He always acted professionally and I could tell that he was well respected by his peers and the court officials. I would recommend him as an attorney without hesitation!

I was so frustrated with the insurance adjuster I was almost ready to give up. It was someone else’s fault that I was hurt, but the adjuster made me feel like the bad guy. Marty & Vinnie were great and I couldn’t believe I didn’t come to them earlier because it would have saved me a lot of time and anger. Plus, I was happy with my settlement.

Sean took on what appeared to be an impossible case to win because of lies told to grand jury and won it by getting to the truth and allowing witnesses to discredit themselves. He is soft spoken, dignified and confident. He won over the jury which found Mr. M. not guilty of all charges.

Melanie is an absolutely incredible attorney. She is extremely bright and works all hours of the day and night to ensure she achieves the best outcome for her clients. Melanie is fierce when dealing with her opponents but very caring when dealing with her clients. She’s got a brilliant legal mind and achieves outcomes that I truly believe no one else could. In addition, she takes on pro bono work because she truly believes in giving back to the community. You will never, ever regret hiring Melanie to represent you. She is the best of the best!

Sam just did my custody agreement case. He was patient through the process, when there was a lot of back and forth and changing things. I had never done custody or anything to do with the courts before and was frazzled about it all, he walked me through everything and kept me on track. Told me all my options and possibilities. I am overall happy with and thankful for the work he has done and recommend him!

After meeting with several prospective attorneys, I retained Matt to defend me in a multiple-count white collar federal criminal case, and his stellar performance was the critical factor in convincing a federal judge to dismiss all the charges, thus sparing me from the time and expense of undergoing a lengthy jury trial. Matt possesses all of the key traits of a successful trial lawyer. He’s a skillful and persuasive orator at court. He’s very detail-oriented, and didn’t hesitate to dive into all the nitty-gritty specifics needed to fully understand my case. He set aside extra time to listen to my perspective. He is an expert drafter, and all of his court filings were clear and comprehensive. He knows the law, and takes the time to research case law so that nothing falls through the cracks. My case was highly complex, and involved tens of thousands of pages of government discovery. Matt used his unique ability to digest a huge volume of materials and quickly hone in on the issues that mattered the most. Because of his efforts, we were always one step ahead of the experienced team of federal prosecutors lined up against me, and this proved critical to our successful defense. Finally, it was clear that Matt genuinely cares about each of his clients, and is willing to make sacrifices to achieve the best possible outcome for them. Matt has earned my highest possible recommendation. Thanks!!

Hannah has represented me for over a year now on serious criminal charges. She is very easy to get in touch with and always answers her phone and even responds to texts. if she is out of town with the OPA, it does not matter. She finds time for you. Even if its just to talk she is there for you 100%. There is no doubt in my mind that she will be a top attorney in the valley very soon. In the course of my dealing with her some new charges came my way and she was front and center making sure i did not make any mistakes which looking back now was crucial and something that i feel other attorneys would not have done. Hannah appears to be very well connected in the legal world and is very well known. The best way I feel to describe her is that she is a Lioness protecting you, her cub. Her rates are very fair and she cares about you're situation. She was in the jail visiting me before anyone else including my family, just seeing if there is anything I needed or that she could do. To me her honesty and loyalty is what makes her amazing. I will honestly say if you find yourself in a life altering situation that requires a need for a attorney, at minimum call her and you will see what i'm talking about.

During my initial consultation with David, which concerned a very delicate and intricate legal matter, he allayed all my fears about going into a seemingly unwinnable court battle. He prepared me for what was ahead in a potentially long legal fight against a defendant with a staff of "high-powered" lawyers on his side. Clearly, my new lawyer took the time to do his research and stayed in constant communication (we never had to chase him down). I didn't expect the extensive and intensive deposition preparation, yet I felt extremely confident after three meetings with his impressive team that I made the right choice hiring Vogel Law Firm. What a relief to have him in my corner. David devoted more than ample time to my case and carefully explained every potential outcome until I felt comfortable, and left me feeling like I was in extremely capable hands with his firm and his supportive and professional staff of caring paralegals and assistants. Mr. Vogel is clearly devoted to his law practice, giving each client (my sister, and co-worker, too!) the time to explain our position - and with openness and candor. We never felt hurried, or like he was "watching the clock." When the "other side" kept filing their ridiculous motions to try to force me to withdraw and just go away, I knew had the best lawyer in south Florida in my corner, at every court appearance with me or attending on my behalf, arguing back - usually with a more winnable position than theirs...ultimately securing for me a very successful (and surprisingly favorable) result, for which I will be eternally grateful. Thank you David, my go-to attorney, and my new friend!

I would highly recommend Jason Downs. He represented my son in a federal criminal case. He is patient, caring, he never rushed us, a very good listener and communicator, and he always returned calls and emails. He was able to secure my son's release from the DC jail (under US Marshals custody) when we thought there was no hope. Jason remained calm and positive through the whole journey, he was accommodating and easy to talk to. I feel my son got a fair sentence, and that was thanks to Jason and his hard work and experience. He is genuine, and I thank him immensely.

I and my family have used Attorney Robin for a variety of transactions and have found him to be excellent. Competent, responsive, and professional...can't ask for more. Unlike attorneys we've worked with in the past, he also does not take himself too seriously - looks at the sunny side of things and puts clients at ease with a joke or humorous sarcastic comment. He's actually fun to work with! Highly recommended.

I hired miss Moise based on a referral from some very good friends. I couldn't be happier with the representation I recieved from her. I have had a few different attorneys and none have been as thorough and relentless as Erica. She represented me on a owi charge and was able to get all charges dropped as well as developing an arguement that no other attorney had entertained. Miss Moise was excellent at keeping me informed and up to date on any changes or news. Any further representation I need in the future will definitely be through miss Moise. I couldn't be more pleased. Miss Moise is very professional on every level. I would recommend her to anyone!!

I was pulled over by the police (who searched my car without permission). and they found a gun, which wasn't mine. I was in trouble and looking at serious jail time. I was lucky to find Attorney Scapicchio. She is not afraid of the police in court and asked them very tough questions. She ended up proving my innocence and I was found not guilty! Unlike most Criminal lawyers who will take any case, she only handles serious charges. I highly recommend her for any high stakes situation. She the best there is.

Sometimes life sucks, accidents happen. It is ok as long as you have a good person to help you. It is exactly how I feel about Mr. Bell. My dog was attacked by my neighbor's bull mastiff years ago. She had two major surgeries and was in ICU for 10 days. I was so devastated to see her suffering. I paid for all the bill, nearly 1.5k. My friend told me about Mr. Bell. Mr. Bell was very patient and professional. He helped me to get my money back. He made the best result out from the worst situation. I highly recommend him.

I had a serious matter in DuPage and I immediately called Mr. Scott. He got back to me right away and told me he would handle it, which was a huge relief. He kept in touch with me in the days leading up to court about my matter, and outlined general strategies that he would use to help me fight my case. Mr. Scott always kept me informed throughout the course of my case. On my last court date on the matter, he was able to negotiate an excellent deal with the State right before heading to trial. He told the State to wait while he explained the ramifications of the deal in detail so that I knew what I was accepting, and he always made it clear that it was my choice and he would do what I wanted. Thanks to Mr. Scott's knowledge and expertise, I was able to go home that night and have dinner with my family, and soon I'll be able to put this whole thing behind me and have a clean record once more. I'm so glad I retained his services. He fought on my behalf and did everything he could to get me the best outcome possible, which he did. I was very relieved as soon as I hired him, because I knew he was the best man for the job. Thank you for your hard work, Mr. Scott!

I've had the opportunity to work with Phil Piggott on several different matters for my company over the last several years and I recommend him without reservation. Phil is professional but extremely personable, knowledgeable, resourceful, and thorough. Phil is a lawyer that will put in the hard work to handle your case, with your best interest at heart, and you will enjoy working with him. He is willing to go beyond the courtroom, out in the field (however unpleasant that may be!) to investigate and prepare all aspects of the case. I am also a lawyer, and work with many other lawyers daily. Phil is a skilled lawyer you can trust and communicate with easily -- and he replies to calls/emails promptly!

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
