Alyssa was great to work with for estate planning and a contract negotiation. I appreciated the flexibility to work through things over the phone and via email. This was my first experience working with a lawyer, and she ensured all of my questions were answered along the way.

She was extremely efficient and helpful and she was able to swiftly understand the situation and help me resolve a matter without long expensive litigation. She helped reach a settlement agreement and a declaratory judgment that was able to provide me with peace of mind during a very difficult time after my father passed away.

Alyssa Miller, was hired by our family for two separate issues. Alyssa was nothing but professional at all times. Alyssa is always respectful and compassionate. At no time did Alyssa make us feel like a customer or client. Alyssa's communication was exceptional and prompt. There is no other attorney that I would call in the state of Colorado. As always, I thank Alyssa for her professionalism and compassion.

Alyssa was great to work with from start to finish. I had a shareholder dispute for a company that I own and Alyssa and her team were very attentive and creative in ultimately helping me achieve a great outcome. Alyssa has great attention to detail and listening skills, in seeking to best understand the problem and the best way to attack it. She also showed a thoughtful and strategic approach in combination with her understanding of case law and precedent that has already been set. Lastly, her communication with me as a client, and with the defendant's attorney, reassured me that she was on top of all scenarios and that we would ultimately reach a desirable outcome. I will be using Alyssa again for any future legal scenarios that may arise with my business.

This place is really nice, especially as you walk in. Very professional atmosphere. They offered coffee and placed us in a large private board room. We have been working with one of the lawyers, Alex, who is great! The paralegals we have dealt with are great also.

I was in a difficult situation and had no idea what to do after my car accident. This law practice was recommended to me by a friend, and I'm so glad I chose it. The lawyers truly gave me a sense of support by taking the time to go over everything with me. They seemed to sincerely care about my well-being and kept me informed at every turn. I appreciate all of their efforts and how my case turned out!

Joanna was our representative from our fiancé visa application and continued through our marriage and green card process. She was very knowledgeable about the process, the steps to take, and took great care and detail filling out the application. Furthermore, her review was essential to make sure no details were missed. She was a great resource and made us feel confident that all our details were perfect. I have recommended and would easily recommend Joanna in the future to any friends or family that desire to start their visa journey.

Joanna came as a strong recommendation from my SVP to replace a well-known Chicago based attorney group that had been sitting on my immigration case for years. She was so thorough, discovered that I was a great candidate for multiple visa types given my entrepreneurial background and, when I decided to leave my then employer, she was so professional in advising me of my options and safeguarding my interests just as well as she did those of my old company. I then retained her for my case and decided to self petition directly for the EB1A, a bold but scary move as I did not want to function at the mercies of my employers anymore. Even though she knew that my case was not fool proof, she took me on and helped craft an incredibly strong case. The most important quality she presented through this work was being consistent and knowing just the right things to say when I got tired, frustrated and discouraged as I was looking for hyper-specific evidence that some organizations would not release to me. And unlike other attorney groups that would judge and self-select text book cases, she knew my desperation, advised me accordingly and when I made my decisions -- still put forth her best effort to make sure my case was solid. I continue to use her now that my EB1A I-140 is approved, and plan to continue to use her for all my immigration needs until I have citizenship. She is such a keeper and her work ethic/dedication to me and my case remains unbelievable!!

I worked with Pezet Law Firm over the last few years. Her guidance and advice were always welcomed. This week I was awarded US Citizenship and I am eternally grateful for Joanna. I highly recommend her.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
