With much skepticism and hesitation Yinan made the process of needing lawyer support extremely easy and would recommend her to anyone needing the same type of representation. Clear, concise, easy to talk to, held to word and supportive during a time of high anxiety and feeling let down by my employer.

Rahul Munshi represented me in an employer discrimination case over a period of 4+ years, which ended in federal court jury trial with a verdict in my favor. While the process for a plaintiff is demanding and frightening, Mr. Munshi supported me over four years to resolve my complaint against my former employer. When you pick a Console Mattiacci Law, you will have the support of each member of the firm cheering for you. Stephen Console was present for a pretrial conference and the day of the trial for jury selection. Weeks before trial date, I learned that Laura Mattiacci would serve as co-counsel for the trial. I knew about her well-regarded reputation in the area of employment law and was surprised by her sweet face and demeanor outside of the courtroom, which is quite deceptive to her courtroom persona. Throughout the trial, I was grateful for being on the side represented by Rahul and Laura rather than the opponents. I would be remiss if I did not mention paralegal, Charlene Bates, who worked behind the scenes in the time before the trial. As the trial approached, she moved front and center and served as the "stage manager" of a courtroom set. I do not recall a time in my life when I felt so supported! With Rahul Munshi's guidance, I found the courage to take on my Goliath to uncover the truth. Finally, I want to acknowledge the members of Console Mattiacci Law for taking time to attend the trial. I may not know your names, but I will always remember each of your kind faces.

In the end, he obtained a result which was even better than I expected and I would recommend him to anyone I know who is having legal problems.

Adam Sackowitz did nothing short of save my life. Adam released me from having to tackle an ugly situation anchored to the jumble of panicked thoughts that was my brain; walked me through all of my options and their implications; rationalized and affirmed my concerns while also creating their solutions; and worked with the utmost professionalism, efficiency, and effectiveness. I couldn't ever thank him enough. While I hope folks don't have to go up against their employers, please know that with Adam in your corner, you would be in very good hands.

I was a client of David E. Gottlieb (one of the partners at Wigdor) for about 1.5 years. I had met with a few other lawyers and selected Gottlieb because (a) I wanted a "shark" for my case and I could tell he would be very aggressive with the other side and (b) he was extremely solicitous to me, the client - he scheduled a call with me over the weekend once because his week was booked. The client service David provided was outstanding. David explained the legal procedure and jargon to me very clearly through every step and was happy to answer my questions. If I emailed him, I don't think he ever took longer than 12 hours to respond, even on the weekend when I wasn't expecting a reply until Monday. His even-keeled demeanor made me feel calm and relaxed, which was very helpful as there were certainly a few anxiety-inducing moments along the way. David Gottlieb is the kind of professional who actually believes in his work and focuses on getting his clients the best outcome possible to make their situation right. I can't recommend him enough.

Paul was the 2nd chair in my case which involved defamation and civil conspiracy. It involved my termination that was based on a new manager that recruited members of my staff to misuse a corporate hotline and make false allegations. There were other events that ensued over the course of a 90 day period before I was let go. We took on a major corporation who had retained an attorney that enjoyed telling us more than once that he was a Duke School of Law graduate and he had 30 years of trial experience. He and my lead attorney worked together as a team to present my case and I was included in the intense preparation. Each idea was thoughtfully discussed and we game planned together to make the story flow for a jury. He also provided valuable critique to help me keep my testimony sharper so that the jury would focus on the real issues. We all worked together once we got the jury list to do quick online research of the potential jurors. Paul offered significant input into each name. When J. Paul Porter did the close on my case, he was all of 26 years old. His closing was masterful. He pointed out each inconsistency and argued each point. We were also up against a hostile judge that could hardly contain his admiration for the defense counsel, and key points of our evidence were excluded, including the fact that my manager was not properly licensed in SC to be a nurse at the time she was spreading false statements about my competency and character. So the odds were against us. At the time of our verdict the average defamation in SC brought somewhere between 7-15,000K. Not a bad day's work for "kid" against a seasoned 30 year veteran. Paul is young and a good trial lawyer. The jury responded well to his questioning of witnesses and his closing. The only cure for "youth" is life experience and he is getting that. He has positioned himself in a position of being mentored by one of the best in employment law, J. Lewis Cromer. The verdict was delivered almost 18 months ago. I have stayed in touch w/ both he and my lead attorney. You can't go to war against an impossible opponent and come out w/ a win and not feel a closeness you fought along beside. In my case, it was never about the money, although I did suffer financially b/c of the actions of others. To me, it was about my reputation and the damage that had been done. The size of the verdict was a resounding rebuke of a major corporation and the corruption that has been exposed as being hospital wide.

For anyone considering litigation to resolve an issue you’re having with a larger entity, do consider consulting Atty. Megan Lemire at Lemire & Hirano for some frank and practical advice. Her firm handled our civil case last year in Portland, and the matter was favorably resolved in roughly six months. The closure of the matter now allows my family to move on to bigger and better things. But I have to mention that the process was nearly “painless,” thanks to our attorney’s familiarity with the system. Because of her prompt communications and follow up with us, we always felt in control. The defendants came a long way from pretending that we didn't exist and hoping that we'd just go away to apologizing and writing a couple of checks for our troubles. Despite the mess that brought us toward the halls of justice, we emerged victorious, elevated and restored after our plan of remedy was devised and executed by the talented and wonderful Megan Lemire.

I recently was informed by a company at which I'd been working for over 10 years that they were going to be changing my employment status - either demoting me and cutting my pay, or terminating my employment with a modest severance package. I had to make a decision about which option was best for me and my family - a very difficult decision to make. I decided to seek an attorney's advice, so I filled out an online contact form on Wigdor's site, because of their excellent reputation. I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email response within 1 day directly from a partner at the firm, Lawrence Pearson, who offered to meet with me to discuss my situation. (This was in stark contrast to another firm I also reached out to, who had a paralegal call me, ask some questions, and then took several days for someone to get back to me to set up a follow-up appointment.) When I met with Lawrence, I was immediately put at ease by his patient and confident manner. He listened to my case and gave me frank and useful advice - without asking for a dime. We agreed that, if my firm did not accept the counter-offer I was preparing to give them, I would engage Lawrence to begin some kind of action...but if my firm DID take my counter-offer, then I'd just take the money and not utilize his services. Lawrence was perfectly fine with that, I felt absolutely no pressure. I truly felt he had my best interests in mind. In the event, my company accepted my counter-offer, and I ended up having no need for Lawrence's services - but I feel confident that, had the need arisen, I would have been ably and forcefully represented by Lawrence and his firm. Overall, a 100% positive experience, and I recommend Lawrence highly for anyone facing a similar situation.

He believes in winning and he does. He did an excellent job of defending me in a frivolous lawsuit brought against me by an HOA in Parker County District Court and I wish he still lived here so I could avail myself of his services again. He also defended a neighbor against the same Hoa and literally skinned them, and made it look easy. I would highly recommend him if you want a favorable outcome.

Mathew is a very professional lawyer that i highly recommend. Since day 1 Mathew seemed very confident, knowledgeable, responsible and an ambitious lawyer. I really appreciated the fact that Mathew always kept me posted on every detail of my case. I was involved in a serious 3 car collision accident that resulted in personal injuries. I had to endure medical treatments and therapy because of it. Mathew did a great job representing my case in court showing that my bodily injuries were due to reckless drivers and i was a victim of it. Mathew went into court very prepared with all my medical records, deposition paperwork and pictures of the accident. He went out of his way to make sure i was well represented. At the end Mathew won my case to the maximum settlement. I was very satisfied with the results. I thank Mathew and his wonderful team for their great efforts.

She knows her area inside out and will advise you on possibilities and course of action. She is pragmatic, respectful and is impressive to everyone who encounters her. Her skill is unsurpassed and she minimizes stress during a time that will be stressful for all. Most importantly, there are many factors that can sway a case one way or another for good or bad. Wow, anyone need divorce attorney? Checkout Richard Sullivan. My spouse and attorney was doing everything possible to delay and obstruct the divorce process. After 3 years and trying couple attorneys, I found Mr Sullivan. He was the only one who got my case moving forward and to the end I noticed that some attorneys are just pushing papers, which is great for an easy-going divorce. However, reaching a settlement it’s always within your control. And I play that no one has to go through what I have. But if you have, or just want to avoid it, give Sullivan Law and associates a call. They continued to negotiate up to the last day, to avoid a trial and settle out of court. But Richard Sullivan is a trial attorney and sometimes you need a trial attorney to avoid a trial. Live well, and be true

I had the pleasure of working with Attorney Ashley Walter and the entire team, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the results. From the very start, they were attentive, thorough, and clearly explained the legal process to me, ensuring I understood every step. Their expertise and commitment to my case were evident, and it was clear they genuinely cared about achieving the best outcome for me. Thanks to their dedication and hard work, we reached a successful resolution, and I felt supported the entire way. The ENTIRE HMC Civil Rights team, especially Heather and Erica, have been a huge blessing! They fought hard for me, and never once made me feel like I was just "another number" to them. They were there for me every step of the way, and made sure I got what I deserved! I would recommend them again and again for anyone who has been discriminated against or mistreated by an employer for something out of their control. This is, BY FAR, the best team in Middle Tennessee, and I'm so grateful for all their hard work and guidance in my case!

What a Discrimination Lawyer Can Do for You

A discrimination lawyer specializes in handling cases where individuals or groups face unfair treatment based on protected characteristics, such as race, gender, age, religion, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation. These lawyers assist clients in filing discrimination claims, representing them in legal proceedings, and ensuring that their rights under federal, state, and local laws are upheld. Discrimination cases may arise in employment, housing, education, public accommodations, or other settings.

Whether you’ve been discriminated against at work, denied housing, or treated unfairly in other areas of life, a discrimination lawyer can help you navigate the legal process and seek compensation or corrective action.

When Should I Hire a Discrimination Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a discrimination lawyer in several situations where unfair treatment occurs based on protected characteristics. Common scenarios include:

  • Employment Discrimination:
    • Workplace discrimination: If you’ve been treated unfairly at work because of your race, gender, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, or another protected status, a lawyer can help you file a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or a similar state agency.
    • Wrongful termination: If you were fired due to discrimination or retaliation for reporting discriminatory behavior, a lawyer can assist with filing a lawsuit and seeking compensation for lost wages, emotional distress, and other damages.
    • Failure to promote: If you’ve been denied a promotion or opportunities due to discriminatory practices, a lawyer can investigate the claim and represent you in legal actions against your employer.
    • Harassment: If you’ve experienced workplace harassment, such as sexual harassment or a hostile work environment based on your race, gender, or other characteristics, a lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.
  • Housing Discrimination:
    • Denial of housing: If you’ve been denied housing due to your race, disability, family status, or other protected factors, a lawyer can help you file a complaint with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or sue the landlord or property manager for violating the Fair Housing Act.
    • Unfair rental practices: If a landlord or property manager treats you unfairly based on discriminatory factors (e.g., refusing reasonable accommodations for a disability), a lawyer can help you enforce your rights.
  • Education Discrimination:
    • Discrimination in schools: If you or your child has faced discrimination in an educational setting based on race, disability, gender, or religion, a lawyer can help you file complaints under laws like Title VI, Title IX, or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Public Accommodations:
    • Denial of services: If a business or public service has discriminated against you based on race, gender, disability, or other protected characteristics, a lawyer can assist you in filing a complaint or lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or other anti-discrimination laws.

Hiring a discrimination lawyer early can help protect your rights and ensure that your claim is filed within legal deadlines.

What Does a Discrimination Lawyer Do?

A discrimination lawyer provides a range of legal services to help individuals and groups fight against discriminatory practices. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing discrimination claims: A lawyer can help you file a complaint with government agencies, such as the EEOC, HUD, or your state’s human rights commission. They ensure that your claim is properly documented and filed within required time limits.
  • Investigating discrimination claims: Discrimination lawyers gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review documents to build a strong case for proving discriminatory practices.
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, a lawyer can negotiate a settlement with the employer, landlord, or other party involved in the discrimination case, seeking compensation or corrective action without going to trial.
  • Representing clients in court: If your case goes to court, a lawyer will represent you during hearings, present evidence, and argue your case before a judge or jury.
  • Handling retaliation claims: If you face retaliation for filing a discrimination complaint or reporting discriminatory practices, a lawyer can help you pursue a retaliation claim.
  • Advising on legal rights: A discrimination lawyer explains your legal rights under federal and state anti-discrimination laws, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the ADA, the Fair Housing Act, and others.

How Are Discrimination Lawyers Paid?

Discrimination lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the expected duration of the legal process. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many discrimination lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case. Their fee is usually a percentage of the settlement or court award, typically ranging from 25% to 40%.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that don’t involve a contingency fee arrangement, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates for discrimination lawyers generally range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For simpler legal tasks, such as drafting a discrimination complaint or providing legal advice, some lawyers may charge a flat fee.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some discrimination lawyers offer pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services, especially in cases involving low-income clients or significant civil rights issues.

It’s important to discuss fee arrangements during your initial consultation to ensure that you understand the total cost of legal services and how payment will be handled.

How Much Does a Discrimination Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a discrimination lawyer depends on factors like the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the potential for a settlement or trial. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fees: If the lawyer works on a contingency basis, their fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of any settlement or court award. For example, if you win a settlement of $50,000 and the lawyer’s fee is 30%, they would receive $15,000, and you would keep the remaining $35,000.
  • Hourly rates: Discrimination lawyers who charge by the hour typically bill between $200 and $600 per hour. For example, a case that takes 20 hours of legal work at $300 per hour would cost $6,000 in legal fees.
  • Flat fees: Some legal services, such as filing a discrimination complaint or providing a legal consultation, may be available for a flat fee ranging from $500 to $2,500, depending on the complexity of the task.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale fees: In some cases, particularly for low-income individuals, lawyers may offer reduced fees or work pro bono.

Always ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation, and clarify whether the lawyer offers flexible payment options.

Top Questions to Ask a Discrimination Lawyer

Before hiring a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and qualifications to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with discrimination cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled discrimination cases similar to yours, whether it involves employment, housing, or public accommodation discrimination.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for a detailed breakdown of costs.
  3. What are my chances of success?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and the likelihood of success.
  4. How long will the process take?
Discrimination cases can take time to resolve, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take, from filing a complaint to reaching a settlement or going to trial.
  5. Will I need to go to court?
Ask whether your case is likely to settle out of court or if a trial may be necessary. If a trial is possible, ask what steps the lawyer will take to prepare.
  6. What damages or remedies can I seek?
Ask about the types of compensation or corrective action you can pursue, such as back pay, emotional distress damages, job reinstatement, or policy changes.
  7. What steps should I take to protect my rights?
Ask for advice on how to document evidence, handle workplace or housing interactions, and avoid retaliation while your case is pending.

How to Check the Credibility of a Discrimination Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable discrimination lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and in good standing with the state bar association. You can check this on your state bar’s website.
  • Look for discrimination case experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in employment law, civil rights, or discrimination cases and have successfully handled similar cases in the past.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on discrimination matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Look for certifications or memberships in civil rights organizations or employment law associations, such as the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Detailed account of the discrimination: Provide a clear description of the discriminatory actions, including dates, locations, and individuals involved. Document specific incidents and any witnesses who can support your claim.
  • Workplace or housing records: Bring copies of relevant employment or housing documents, such as job performance evaluations, rental agreements, emails, or written correspondence related to the discrimination.
  • Company or organization policies: If the discrimination occurred in the workplace or housing, bring copies of company policies, employee handbooks, or housing agreements that outline anti-discrimination policies.
  • Evidence of damages: Provide evidence of any financial losses, such as lost wages, job termination, or increased rent, as well as emotional or psychological distress caused by the discrimination.
  • Previous complaints or actions: If you’ve filed previous complaints or taken any action related to the discrimination, such as reporting the issue to HR or filing a complaint with a government agency, bring copies of those documents.
  • Questions about the process: Prepare a list of questions about your legal options, potential outcomes, and the lawyer’s approach to handling your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice for pursuing your discrimination claim.
