retained her services for a simple dissolution / divorce that needed minimal mediation. Instead of abiding by what we discussed for strategy and setting up mediation she constantly moved toward trial proceedings and blamed spouses attorney. Turns out court view showed she was filing delays. Additionally she would go for long periods of time and not respond to email or calls yet when she billed you she could communicate that. Had to request status after initial court filing when spouse response to being served was overdo. only to find that she let the deadline lapse without moving notifying the court. Motion of default would have been resolved right away and she chose not to file when clearly that was my request - end the marriage expeditiously . Misrepresented and poor to no communication along with her leaving town a lot. Not a dedicated or reliable attorney.

For those who don’t have money, he’s not the attorney for you! Money is what drives the work he put towards your case. He’s not working in your best interest or the child’s, or for what is the right thing to do, he works for the potential largest payout to him!

Seemed too busy and unmotivated to properly prepare our custody case. He gave me less than an hour last minute the day before the trial to prepare. During trial he was unorganized and “forgot” important issues we discussed. Our judge even commented on it. His priority is about getting paid not providing quality services.

Heather represented us on a DUI. She thoroughly reviewed the case information, kept us in the loop on what was occurring and worked hard to get the best outcome under the circumstances. Heather answered all of our questions and provided us with realistic and practical information to assist us in this process. She was extremely pleasant, helpful and had a wealth of knowledge in helping us navigate the unfortunate situation that we were in. I highly recommend her to anyone in the Fairbanks area looking for legal assistance.

I had what was a slam dunk situation (described by Ms Brown and another respected lawyer) in my favor and the way Ms. Brown wrote up the paperwork, it not only got denied by the court. It was filled out wrong and I had to go and scratch out parts of her work and rewrite parts of it. Once my situation was denied, I tried calling Ms Brown and I couldn't even get a return call from her. I hope local residents avoid this attorney. So many better options out there and you deserve so much better treatment from an attorney.

I hired Jacob based on a recommendation from a friend to help me in a divorce turned dissolution. He is very charismatic and expensive. While I believe that he is good attorney, he did not take care of my case as could be expected from an attorney that is charging an absolute premium for his time. The reasons for my bad review are as follows: - He missed multiple phone meetings - He talked me into a settlement conference from which he later wrote " We should NOT have agreed to mediation – I feel responsible for that decision. It put you on a slippery path to an agreement that is probably far beyond what a court would have ordered at trial." - He had to ask me what was agreed in the mediation, because his notes were lacking. - During the court hearing, he almost was dismissed by the judge. - The QDRO he drafted got rejected, and he left me cleaning it up with the other attorney. - He promised me a substantial brake on my bill, but only came up with a small one. What should have been a simple dissolution turned into a 1.5 year nightmare. I like Jacob as a person, but the performance on my case was sub-par. As reflected by the positive reviews, I think that it would have been different if he would have had the time to properly prepare.

This attorney is the hidden gem of Alaskan lawyers. Modest, ethical and fiercely smart. He practices the old school *art of counsel* that has been lost in so many law firms. When you ask other good lawyers who they recommend, Jake is top of the list every time. After a hundred thousand in legal fees from other lawyers and battling a malignant narcissist and his criminal girlfriend for a year, Jake took my case and swiftly ended their non-sense. He protected me and continues to protect me and also schooled the other side on the law. Judges respect him when he speaks and man is he some kind of smart!

Jacob and his team are second to none. He always tried to go with the most inexpensive and direct approach to end my case. He always kept my daughter top of his priority never what I or my ex unrealistically wanted. He listened to both sides and worked diligently to find a way we could settle. After settling failed he always went out of his way to fight for me. I could not imagine how my life would be right now if he did not accept me as a client. More then 4 lawyers passed on my case due to me living out of state. Thank you Jacob for always believing in me.

At a time in my life when one step forward yielded two steps back, Ms. Therrien was helpful, professional, and actually only charged me what she said she would in the first place. She stated what to do, what to expect, where to be when, and gave me a timeframe. And when I had an additional related question for her and asked what I owed her for taking the time to answer, she actually said it was a relevant question and therefore included in the previously stated charges.

Jennifer is honest and works against herself - so to speak. She could have taken my case and made a tremendous amount of money in doing so but looked at my matter (on two occassions) and said either, "you don't need an attorney for this" or "I can take your case but you'd be throwing money away for nothing" - who else does that???????? Not any attorney that I've consulted before. She offered to ghost write a motion for me, which I took her up on> I would hire her for her forthcoming honesty and recommend her for the same in a heartbeat.

Gary helped me with a very complicated divorce. He kept me informed at all times, asked for my input, and helped me understand what was going on. A family member of mine recently went through a divorce with a different lawyer so I can now compare. Gary was BY-FAR a better advocate. You can trust him to do what you ask. If you want to drag it out, he'll fight for you. If you want to get it over with quickly he'll provide knowledgeable advise that you can use to make informed decisions. I would recommend him highly.

In 1996 I told my ex-husband (Tom Spurlock) I wanted a divorce; it was a hard decision, but I knew I had to do it. I was not physically abused- but I was mentally/emotionally abused. We had 3 children, they were starting to treat me the same as he did. I knew I could not allow them to find this acceptable-2 of them we’re little girls- I was especially concerned for them- they were 9 and 13. I could not let them think this was how a man should treat a woman. I was not going to have any part in my son(11) thinking it alright to treat women this way. Tom figured I didn’t have the money to hire a lawyer and he had plenty. A friend of mines dad worked with Darryl, she set it up for us to meet. After explaining the situation to him he agreed to take omy case “ Pro-Bono. It was a messy divorce- one factor that played into it was the custody of the 3 children. The 2 oldest were adopted by Tom- the 3rd was our child together. I was requesting full custody of my oldest daughter- (Tom and her did not have a good relationship at that time), I regretfully was willing to allow Tom to have full custody of my son - I thought if I did this Tom would be nicer to all of us- I will regret that for the rest of my life. I wanted shared custody of our daughter. N we had t try o go through a separate hearing because of the custody issues.finally after several motions back and forth between the two lawyers, custody was awarded as I requested. Thinking Tom would be nicer to myself and the children - it didn’t happen that way- so more motions were presented- finally it was done. I did not have to pay anything to Darryl- Tom Spurlock was presented with the bill- as it should be. After a few years passed my son decided he no longer wanted to live with Tom-Darryl once again did want was needed to make this happen, again it was not easy- but he had my sons best interest moving forward. I would highly recommend Mr. Darryl Thompson to anyone needing to have faith that he will do the best job for you and your needs.

He was strait forward with me about my case and very realistic about the terms of the case and his opinion of the potential settlement. He was not fast to throw out numbers not to get hopes up but stayed on top of the respondent and is pursuing the matter as adamantly as possible. Also his staff specifically Michelle is very involved with his cases and answers any concerns I have as quickly as possible if Mr. Thompson doesn't beat her to it.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
