If you need a strong, competent, confident, knowledgeable, well respected, winning lawyer...this is the one. A little pricey but pricing is on par with his experience and his peers. Very economical and effective with his use of time so fees are kept as reasonable as possible. Our use was for family law where he has had great input and impact in the District of Columbia. I understand that he practices several other areas of law (like tax and criminal, and more); I cannot imagine that he would be any less effective with those than he is with this.

Upon contacting the Musca Law firm they took immediate action and made me feel at ease. I recently found myself under investigation for a serious crime, but the professionalism and courteous nature of all members of the firm made all of the difference. I would highly recommend them to anyone accused or under investigation. I can't thank them enough.

If you've worked with enough attorneys before, you know that the experience varies drastically from one lawyer to another, and that the quality of the experience is a function of both the counselor's skill and dedication and your own ability to provide the information they need to win your case. Regarding the former, Andrew is the most skilled attorney I've ever engaged. As to the latter, he both (1) clearly communicated what he needed me to give him and (2) dug into the meat of the case to discover facts that weren't readily apparent but were critical to my wrongful termination case. Additionally, he deftly prepared and guided me through the various interviews and negotiations with my former employer and provided sound, rational advice regarding how to respond to various situations and what to expect. All of this made a highly stressful and traumatic situation much calmer and more manageable for me. That's a rare quality and skill, in my experience, one that is highly prized. On top of all of this, he's affable, kind, measured, thorough, and extremely easy to talk to/work with/be around. I cannot recommend him strongly enough.

Sean took on what appeared to be an impossible case to win because of lies told to grand jury and won it by getting to the truth and allowing witnesses to discredit themselves. He is soft spoken, dignified and confident. He won over the jury which found Mr. M. not guilty of all charges.

I was very pleased with Mr. Cantys performance as an attorney. I sought out a competent attorney to assist me with getting the appropriate education that my child deserved for being neglected in the public school system for years. Mr. Canty allowed me to express myself and he has shown compassion for my child and allowed her to express what she wants for herself. He has attended the school and sat at the meetings when he didn't have to be in attendance. He walked me through step by step explaining the procedures of how the public school system did not want to pick up incurred cost due to their negligence, and was very cordial with the public school system even when they weren't. Mr. Canty continued not to get impatient when trying to fulfill my wants and needs for my child. My final meeting lasted approximately two hours and within that time I came out very pleased. Not only did this attorney know what he was doing, but my child is receiving an excellent education in a private placement. I definitely recommend Mr. Canty for his excellent services, his patience, and understanding. My child walks with her head held high because she now knows that she is receiving the best thanks to Mr. Canty.

After meeting with several prospective attorneys, I retained Matt to defend me in a multiple-count white collar federal criminal case, and his stellar performance was the critical factor in convincing a federal judge to dismiss all the charges, thus sparing me from the time and expense of undergoing a lengthy jury trial. Matt possesses all of the key traits of a successful trial lawyer. He’s a skillful and persuasive orator at court. He’s very detail-oriented, and didn’t hesitate to dive into all the nitty-gritty specifics needed to fully understand my case. He set aside extra time to listen to my perspective. He is an expert drafter, and all of his court filings were clear and comprehensive. He knows the law, and takes the time to research case law so that nothing falls through the cracks. My case was highly complex, and involved tens of thousands of pages of government discovery. Matt used his unique ability to digest a huge volume of materials and quickly hone in on the issues that mattered the most. Because of his efforts, we were always one step ahead of the experienced team of federal prosecutors lined up against me, and this proved critical to our successful defense. Finally, it was clear that Matt genuinely cares about each of his clients, and is willing to make sacrifices to achieve the best possible outcome for them. Matt has earned my highest possible recommendation. Thanks!!

Consulted Mr Yellig on a variety of issues and problems involving personnel and labor issues. He's clearly a strong advocate for organized labor and the issues that affect it's membership. It helps me to have this point of view explained. As a General Counsel for a 4 billion corp for 30 years who hired hundreds of attorneys from around the country Mr Yellig is someone I can certainly recommend. I can recommend him as an intelligent lawyer that cares about his clients and is tireless in working for them.

During the 20 years that I've done business with him, Gary has worked on a wide variety of projects for the International Council of Air Shows, ranging from simple review and updates to our organization's bylaws and informal consultation on potential legal issues to writing and filing amicus briefs on complicated federal/constitutional issues and providing insight and advice on legal action taken against our organization. Mr. O'Banion represented my teenage son for his first traffic ticket that was a result of an accident. Mr. O'Banion took the time to understand the case and developed a plan of action. Mr. O'Banion was able to represent my son in court and my son didn't even need to be there! The result?! Dismissal!! Completely worth every penny. No hit to his driver's licence and no hit to the car insurance! I highly recommend Mr. O'Banion!

David Farber is an exceptional lawyer. He is very knowledgeable and tenacious in pursuing insurance claims, he also takes the time to explain the law to his clients and he cares about his clients. If the case needs to go to court, you will be well represented as he is a passionate and persuasive speaker. David just closed a contested claim for us. The insurance company denied our claim completely but one by one, with patience and knowledge, he was able to find the flaw in each of their roadblocks. In the end he succeeded in obtaining a settlement that was higher than our initial claim!

Many moons ago, while still in the throes of a virulent addiction to cocaine, and on parole, I was charged with possession of the same. Even though I had volunteered the illicit substance to the policeman, Abraham Blitzer urged and counselled me to take it to trial. After prosecutorial continuances, on the day of trial I noticed that my name appeared twice on the court docket. When the Judge called my case, the prosecutor pulled the other Stephen Palmer's file out of the basket. She requested yet another continuance. My lawyer, Abraham Blitzer, jumped from his seat and objected with: "Your Honor, move to dismiss for lack of prosecution!" The Judge said: "Case dismissed", and pounded his gavel.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
