Kevin and his team were absolutely fantastic to work with and I was impressed with their level of intelligence, professionalism, and handling of my case. They have a thorough understanding of employment law and I appreciated how they handled opposing counsel and how respectful they were to the courts. I was proud to have them represent me and continue to refer them to others.

Sandra was the most thorough real estate attorney I have ever worked with. Sandra's level of knowledge was superb. Sandra guided us through every part of the contract negotiation to the proper deadlines to adhere to. She was available as much as we needed her to - we needed lots of hand holding through our first home purchase. So many other attorneys my family has worked with in the past refused to do even half as much effort as Sandra. Thank you

I was introduced to Bruce Rose almost a dozen years ago. During the last decade he has handled all of my legal affairs. Bruce is a Rolodex of legal knowledge, he is always around to give you good advice, and solve problems, when you need him. He is genuinely a good person who has impeccable ethics and is reachable in a timely manner. Bruce sets the bar high, other lawyers can only try and live up his standards of law. I highly recommend him for your legal needs.

Mr. Mastny took on my case of negotiating a better severance package from my ex-employer. I was very concerned with the process but he made me feel at ease and felt it was the right thing to do. He always kept me informed and was very responsive when I reached out to him with any questions. In the end, he accomplished what he set out to do and I was extremely happy with the outcome and the quick time that it was handled. I would highly recommend his firm.

I wanted to thank you again for your representation in 2013-2014 and all of your help in getting my law license. Though the first year was a struggle, as is to be expected in this highly competitive legal marketplace, earlier this year I landed a job at a dream job with a great firm. I would not have had the opportunity to even qualify for this job if it wasn't for the great work that both you and your associate did for me. Thank you both very much for your first class representation, it has truly made a positive impact in my life.

I am pleased to be able to write the first review for this firm. Our investment corporation was referred to Aronson & Walsh this year for help with bankruptcy issues involving debtor's chapter 7 & 13's. I spoke with Amy Aronson and addressed some issues we had with some bankruptcy chapter 13 plans and wanted her help to object to the plans in our favor. To date, we've sent over approximately 20 files and Amy delivered favorable results on all files placed with her firm. Amy is now our "go-to" person with any bankruptcy issues. I'm so happy we were referred to her. She's very kind, passionate about her work, knowledgeable and actually has a sense of humor. :) I HIGHLY recommend Aronson & Walsh to all creditors looking for true representation of their portfolio.

Alex listened carefully to my situation and provided me with the appropriate advice. It is obvious he is highly knowledgeable about employment and labor laws, he immediately knew potential options and possibilities. He ensured I understood the plan, what may happen, and when I needed assistance in understanding a document, he patiently worked through it with me, line by line. I was kept up to date throughout the entire process, and in the end, I'm happy with the settlement I received. I would highly recommend Alex.

I have worked with Aaron on multiple matters for my company involving everything from standard bankruptcy analysis to complex eight figure disputes. Aaron and his team are responsive, diligent and most importantly, they come to the table with a "big picture" focused approach. Aaron will continue to be my bankruptcy counsel of choice and I would recommend him with absolutely no reservations.

I cannot say enough great things about Louis as my real estate attorney. I've had 3 Chicago real estate attorneys. The first was not memorable, the second was horrific and the third, Louis, was outstanding. He is completely on top of it, very responsive, and doesn't mess around. He also goes to bat for you and is your biggest advocate -- looking out for your best interests during the real estate transaction from start to finish, and for me, after the finish helping me contest my taxes and tracking down a lagging recorded deed. I would highly recommend him to any of my friends and family.

We were denied claim by a public and fortune 500 insurance company, suffering hundreds of thousands of dollars in casualty loss. Chris was able to find key points that the insurance company had failed to follow. He was patient with us, and very compassionate. Communications were very prompt and clear. After nearly 4 years (partially due to COVID delays), we were able to get reasonable settlement close to our damages. We strongly recommend Chris to help with any insurance-related cases.

He is one of the best attorneys to practice criminal law in Milwaukee County Circuit Court. Unlike most other Public Defender appointed Lawyers, and Court/Judge appointed Lawyers, he doesn't try to force you into taking a plea bargain for a charge, or charges that you are innocent of!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
