If you're looking for a family (child custody) lawyer, Mark IS who you want! He went above and beyond for me, from keeping in contact with me to; meeting me at 9pm at his office (Sunday night) the day before we had court. He doesn't back down from ANYTHING or ANYONE! If you ever get to see him in "action," I know you'll agree. Highly recommend, I've had him on a few different occasions and he always did exactly what we discussed.

My boyfriend had gotten pulled over on his way home and ended up going to jail. His bond had been set for $5000, which I couldn't afford to pay. After talking to a friend, she referred me to Mr. Sipes, and she claimed he was the best attorney in Meade County. I was skeptical, but she had never lead me wrong and I figured I could at least call him. When I got Mr. Sipes on the phone, I explained my boyfriends charges and what initially lead to him being stopped and then I asked Mr. Sipes what it would take for him to represent my boyfriend. I got the reply I had expected; the retainer fee up front and then more money throughout the remainder of the case. I explained to Mr. Sipes that my boyfriend and I are both single parents with our own daily living expenses. I told him if he could work with me in some way I would guarantee he would get every penny he asked for. I was floored when I heard his response, "If you'll guarantee me the money, I'll represent your boyfriend." We then went through a few more details about my boyfriend and the case, then he asked a few basic questions about me and got my contact info. He said that he was going to appear in court the following morning on behalf of my boyfriend (before I had paid anything towards the retainer fee) to have the bond amount lowered. By that evening (the same day I had initially made the inquiry to Mr. Sipes) I had gotten word through my boyfriends mom that his boss and her had just gotten off the phone and she was told that my boyfriend had been added to the docket the following day for arraignment. It sounded to good to be true so I called the jail to see if they knew anything, they didn't. By that time the court house had already been closed for a few hours so I figured I would see if the docket may have been put online. First off, I never honestly expected to find the docket online, but I did, and then as as I was scanning through it I found my boyfriends name. I couldn't contain my excitement as I realized what had happened...Mr. Sipes had called my boyfriends boss to verify employment and then, somehow, he was able to get the whole case expidited a week sooner than I had expected...and I still had not given him any money yet. I'm writing this review on the same day as all of this happened, so as of right now, my boyfriend will have court in the morning and from what I've been told plus a little extra research online, I should be bringing my boyfriend home tomorrow after court. As far as Mr. Sipes goes, he was completely honest with me about everything, he listened carefully to what I had to say, he was understanding of my situation and was willing to work with me if I was willing to work with him, and he went above and beyond what I had ever expected him to do just so my boyfriend could return home to his son and all the rest of us and so my boyfriend wouldn't lose his job. I've never met a person who was so straight-forward and understanding, I've never met a lawyer who was so good at his job, and I've never met an angel until I met Mr. Darrin Sipes today...he's well worth every penny he'll charge you and I really do believe he is the best lawyer in Meade County.

Mr. May, while young, is clearly on the right path toward great success in Louisville. Following my accident, I contacted his firm in hopes of finding someone who could get me back to work and pay my bills. Mr. May was suggested and I am glad he was. He got me back to work and taught me some secrets in regards to who is really here to help you (HINT: Its not the insurance company). I was able to get a settlement that was designed to pay my accident bills in full, as well as the time off work. The best part was that this settlement covered all these bills AFTER attorney fees were paid out. I consider Mr. May more than an attorney, He's now a friend of the family and will suggest him to anyone who has to suffer a similar situation as I did. Thank you!

Mrs. Buchenberger is amazing! My father was a steel worker who traveled the nation working construction projects and was severely injured on a job in a sourhern state while employed by an Indiana corporation. Mrs. Buchenberger helped my father get his medical bills taken care of though the Indiana worker's comp system before helping us find a lawyer in the state where my father was injured. Mrs. Buchenberger went above and beyond to help my dad. Anyone who hires this attorney is lucky to have her!!! I'm so thankful for her assistance with my father's case.

Our experience with Mrs. Hill was a pleasure. Her professionalism and class goes above and beyond the call of duty. She is eloquent and direct while maintaining the highest quality of service. Its amazing to see such a strong woman in action, getting the job done, while never losing sight of the things truly important...family, truth, and honor. Standing up for what's right with dignity and refusing to allow strife to be her focus, Mrs. Hill is ruthless when necessary, properly caring and considerate, and what I would describe as a beast in the courtroom! Looking for an amazing person to represent you? Look no further. I know with certainty we will turn back to this distinguished, intelligent, honorable attorney with any future legal needs without hesitation.

Mr. Winchell has been my attorney for the past six years. When I was seeking out an attorney for my divorce I went to a friend who I trust ethically in law and asked who they thought would be the most ethical attorney who wouldn't waste my time and money on unnecessary courtroom theatrics, as well as spend time arguing semantics which have nothing to do with the law or the divorce. I made it clear I had absolutely nothing to hide and that truth would win the day. Mr. Winchell took my case, after which I watched him methodically use truth, experience, and his expert knowledge of the law to tear apart the lies and deceptions of one of the most crooked attorneys I have ever witnessed. This was also after getting ripped off by two previous attorneys. There were times I was tempted to argue emotion, like so many do, but he was clear in letting me know the law and truth are what mattered, and that is what would be focused on. I can't imagine how much my fees would have been if he had let me use him as my therapist like so many try to do with attorneys. Short of tragedy on his end of things, I can't imagine having another attorney in my corner when I need to go to family court to answer more ridiculous and erroneous motions filed by my ex. Mr. Winchell is forthright about what he needs to know, and do, on behalf of his clients. To some this may come across as being abrupt, but I can assure you, anytime he needs to talk and you to be quiet is time which is saving you money and working in your favor. Not only is Mr. WInchell competent and astute, he also has one of the best administrators working behind the scenes to make sure you have the best help available to represent you in what can be a very unpleasant setting. I highly recommend Mr. Winchell if you are wanting someone who knows the law in family court, and won't waste your time and money letting your emotions rule the day. If you need therapy, then go hire a therapist, but if you want the best representation you can find in a court of law in Bullitt County, then Mr. Winchell is your man. I have recommended numerous people to him over the years, and will continue to do so with the full confidence that should they retain him, they won't be disappointed in the least.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
