She will pretend to represent you, but behind your back she will “befriends” with opposing party and receive money(from the opposite party) for Betrayal in any case you try to have her represent you.I should have did a BAR Report for background experiences to dictate my choice of hiring her-she was despicable in personal and business. After the passing of my brother, I realized I could make life a lot easier for my loved ones by having my powers of attorney and living trust prepared so my desires were clear and the people I may someday rely on will be empowered to help me. Mr. Coulson and his staff provided guidance and base documents transparently and with a kindness that made me feel that my estate is safe and secure. Staff members replied to messages quickly, the fees were fair, and the work was perfect.

His elder services were a disaster. My sister took our mother to him. To make a long story short she paid him almost $12,000 to mess everything up. Three weeks before she died he SOLD her annuities and then transferred ownership of her home to us kids. So when she passed away there was no money available and when we sold the house we paid over $30,000 in income tax because he transferred ownership before she died. Had we never used him everything would have been better. Trust me, it’s all about money in his pocket.

Mr. Coulson was extremely knowledgeable in the field of elder law.....and I had spoken to a few before hiring him to help our mother in getting Va and Medicaid benefits. She is now in a good nursing home where we feel good about her senior care. So much red tape to get through. We could never have done this on our own.

I wouldn't hire this clown with your money. Impossible to contact, no information at all about upcoming court dates, it seems no attention at all was given to my case. A simple divorce took almost 2 years. On top of it all, my Ex violates the child custody agreement, and he says there's nothing he can do. What a complete joke.

My highest recommendation for Scott. Very smart, knowledgeable, dedicated, and stays calm in the fray. If I ever had a question, I got help. He truly cares. My only wish is he would have been my one and only lawyer as he corrected 5 big mistakes previous lawyer made in short order. He was instrumental in alleviating a lot of my pain throughout with his explanation of strategy, what the judge does / doesn’t care about, and what we would do to counter a very adversarial opposing counsel. Important note: over dozen lawyers would not take case against opposing firm. Big name law firm also declined, but told me to call Scott. Best thing I could have done.

I first called Terry Kaufman after receiving an advertisement for him, as an attorney in mail. I called for free consultation with Terry Kaufman. He told me pro, cons & basicly anything he thought I would want. I was convinced to hire him & paid half money upfront. After 2 week Terry Kaufman sends a letter in mail, before my 1st court date, stating what proscutor agreed on & stating if I don't accept he wasn't able go further with case. The plea agreement would be ridiculous for me to accept so I didn't accept. Terry Kaufman took all money I paid upfront for what I feel he didn't deserve as we hadn't even went to court. I feel if your a good lawyer or attorney than you fight for your client. Terry Kaufman refused to send me any detail receipt for what my money was used on. Please don't hire him.

I found Terry in a Google search. We met for a free consultation (he'll also answer questions for free also) and was impressed. The reasonable retainer fees allowed us to take our cases to court and have both convictions reduced. You'll pay higher retainer fees with other local attorneys and probably be disappointed. He'll make recommendations at no cost if it is outside of his scope of expertise. I highly recommend Terry.

This lawyer was paid in full by my son and never once went to see him, he did show up for court only to appear but did not speak on my son's behalf! He choked up once the judge spoke as well as when the prosecutor spoke! I have called and called Byron and when I did speak with him he only promised what he did not stand up to. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone!

Bryon understands the Kansas City legal system and knows many piers working within the legal system. He is extremely knowledgeable, and will work to resolve your problem with YOUR outcome in mind. I have used other attorney's in KC, and found they failed. If you need a great guy, a strong attorney, and the best attorney, who has your back.... Byron should be your first call.

Any case that has something to do with death is an emotional one. When hired, it was believed that Mr. Carp would fight for our side. After the first court appearance, he dropped the case. Filed his removal the day after (with the courts) but didn't communicate that for some time to the actual client. He does not communicate well and will only continue your case if you make his life easier by saying "yes" to everything. Not wanting to say "yes" to everything was the very reason he was hired. The money spent to retain his services was a waste. Look for a better attorney!

I hired Arturo Hernandez less than a year ago as our immigration lawyer. I'll keep this simple and to the point. The last 6 months have been focused on just trying to get in contact with him. Not one call back. Not one email. I paid him; my very life altering situation he was hired for; unchanged. No itemized bill upon written request. Non existent communication, empty promises, and lies are what he felt was appropriate for me and I'm left with the mess of significant money loss and broken hearts throughout our family. What he has done or lack thereof should be illegal if it isn't already. I was impressed upon first meeting him; what I would give to go back and not make that huge mistake.

He has been clean for over a year now and is a star in the drug court program. Art never let down that he was fighting for our son. When I hired Mr. Adams to represent me it was supposed to be a rather simple case being the other parent was in jail. The other parent ended up getting out and showing up to court. Mr. Adams turned to me and said "We're toast" this is a horrible thing to ever hear from your attorney! The Judge set it over so he could have time to review the case and documents from both parties. Hearing nothing from Mr. Adams and my court hearing getting close I contacted him to see what defense or information he had prepared for court. Stating " I don't even know what this hearing is for" was the response I got. At court the Judge had read all of the false accusations and statements turned in by the other parents attorney and ripped my life apart. Why did I think anything good was going to happen when Mr. Adams never even turned in any kind of defense on my behalf nor did he object to anything that was provably incorrect. To make matters worse evidence left on Mr. Adams voicemail at his work was never even brought up when it would have probably won my case! As an attorney their job is to defend you and fight for your right but family law is more then that. Family Law attorneys are the difference between you seeing your child grow up and because of Mr. Adams I am missing parts of my child's life I can never get back! Making matters worse my child is in an abusive situation that my lawyer could have shown to the Judge, but he didn't and my child to this day is still being abused. As a parent it is your job to protect your child and do whats best for them regardless of what it takes. How could I have known that a wrong choice in an attorney is something that would be such a life shattering experience! The fact that I cry every day and that my child is being abused doesn't seem to matter one bit to Mr. Adams because I've not heard from him. After court he kept saying "I'm sick to my stomach about it" but just as he did nothing in that court room he has done nothing about it since. I have lost the only thing that matters to me in life and cant begin to explain the pain and heartache I live with. All I want to do is maybe prevent anyone else from having to experience it by selecting Mike Adams as their attorney.

I hired Mr. Brotherton to litigate a specific matter. He made a critical mistake by citing a civil rule in a criminal case. This would leave the prosecution and the judge with an easy way to defeat the motion. I had him correct his own mistake but he charged me for the correction. He also charged me by the hour in addition to the retainer. He lead me to believe that the retainer was for his hourly charges to come from when I retained him.

This attorney was completely unprepared for my divorce trial and it cost me dearly. His questioning of both myself and my former spouse were insufficient. I had numerous questions that I had instructed Jim as my attorney to ask my ex so that the judge could get a clear picture. He said he would use my questions and then did not and did not ask many questions of his own. Not sure how this guy is still in practice. DO NOT HIRE HIM unless you want an unprepared attorney representing you in court. I would classify my representation as NEGLIGENT. I almost fired him during the trial for incompetence. In hindsight, I should have as I would have been better able to represent myself.

I started working with Sam 2 years ago before he started working at Dipasquale Moore. My case lasted just under 2 years. My settlement was just last week. Sam admitted that he was not communicating well with me. This lasted for nearly a year and half before another attorney from his firm had to take over my case. Would not recommend.

I hired Sam for three matters within the last year. He has always handled my matters efficiently and with care. He does not over bill like I see many attorneys do and he truly cared about the outcomes of my matters. I highly recommend Sam Barnett!

Allison reviewed my situation and told me exactly what to expect from the get go. She really took the time to listen to my concerns and answered all of my questions with my best interest in mind. Allison had very strategic ways of thinking through next steps in my case and gave me options I never thought I would have. She is extremely knowledgeable and very passionate about helping people. I would highly recommended her to anyone...she will be your shelter in the storm!

BEWARE! if she thinks you have money she will suck you dry. i have learned that divorce does not have to be as complicated as attorneys make it. it is often really straight forward, but she extends the litigation and files unnecessary motions so she can keep charging you to pump up her bill. she doesn't try to find the best solution because it is not in her best interest financially to resolve everything quickly. in the end she really makes things so much worse and you will probably end up exhausted and financially ruined because of your legal bills. AND because of her attitude towards the whole situtation she will ensure that you have no hope at having a decent relationship with your ex spouse for the sake of your kids. cordell & cordell is not really what they advertise to be.

I hired Arthur Margulis because the state brought charges against me. I have to say I was not totally innocent but the corruption by St Louis County police investigators to manufacture evidence and willingness to lie, as well as assualt me, damaged their own case. Mr Margulis did an excellent job demonstrating to the jury STLCPD duplicity. Acquittal is one of greatest words in English, & I have stayed out of trouble since. The financial burden of the trial and the personal stress on me & my family are something I would not wish on anyone. I suspect the abuse by STLCPD is seldom challenged in court, or by the press.

Hire Mr. Margolis and his son William to defend me on Federal Bank Fraud indictment. Although he promised to fully defend me. After he was paid full retainer of $150,000 ( $50,000 of it if the case went to trial ) he told me I had to accept a plea deal and he refused to refund the "for trial portion". He failed to provide any defense and did not object to anything at sentencing. nor did he offer any substantive evidence or argument on my behalf. Only upon my insistence, he submitted an objection to pre-sentence report inaccuracies and violations of sentencing guidelines. He subsequently withdrew the objections, " because the it made the US Attorney upset". Due to this lack of adequate representation my sentencing and restitution were grossly inflated.

We hired Christina Miller to represent our Gestational Carrier in the process of drafting our Gestational Surrogacy Agreement. During drafting, Christina communicated poorly, failed to provide necessary context to crucial redlines (we learned later the carrier had mentioned detail that was simplynot shared and that Christina had added redlines not requested by the carrier), and ultimately convinced the carrier to break the match by directly misrepresenting the language around termination to her, claiming that we were asking for the right to terminate a healthy pregnancy (in fact the draft stated directly that termination would only be contemplated if a doctor advised the quality of life of any born child would be exceedingly low or if the pregnancy were to become entirely unviable and dangerous to the carrier). The criteria for termination were previously discussed between ourselves, the carrier, and agency. We all agreed unequivocally that it would be our decision as intended parents (so long as the carrier's health was not at risk of course) and only something we'd consider if medically advised to do so and on the basis of quality of life. In fact, this was also documented on a form kept by the agency, where our carrier specified that she would leave termination decisions up to intended parents. In other words, our carrier had already agreed to the terms we drafted and only due to Christina's misrepresentation of the draft language subsequently changed her mind. Additionally Christina wanted to change the compensation agreement that the carrier had already negotiated with the agency. This is a separate agreement, specified by the carrier and negotiated with the agency. This same compensation agreement is agreed to by us as intended parents with the agency. All parties had already signed this compensation agreement prior to drafting the GSA. In other words, everyone has already agreed to these details. Furthermore, Christina made several puzzling redline additions that we learned from the carrier were not requested by her: such as allowing late-term travel to states where surrogacy is illegal or otherwise considerably more complex (this could put parentage in jeopardy should the carrier deliver in such a state). Another example: Christina made the claim that the standard compensation schedule our agency has used for the last decade could be viewed as "baby buying". This same schedule has been reviewed by dozens of ART attorneys who found no legal issue with it. There is no simply legal basis for this claim whatsoever and this item alone concerns me regarding Christina's capability and qualifications for ART law. Because the legal process is usually the last step before an embryo transfer, this meant we had already invested over $15,000 in the match, paying for: psychological evaluation, insurance review, prescription medication, medical exams, medical screening for the carrier and her partner (imaging, bloodwork, etc), airfare, taxi, hotel accommodation, and so on. While it's important that both the carrier and intended parents have proper legal representation, it is never appropriate for an attorney to misrepresent a legal agreement to their client. To say that the drafted language was anything but a clear set of reasonable constraints that actively sought to avoid termination is not just dishonest it's unethical. We were completely baffled as to why Christina would represent our draft language this way and behave in a manner that seemed to intentionally add friction to the drafting process until we were later informed by a separate party that Christina and the carrier had immediately begun working with a new set of parents once the match had broken and that Christina was able to secure a special deal that netted her three times the usual fee to represent both. Hopefully our experience can be helpful to folks who are considering Christina's services.

Christina Miller is a wonderful attorney and person. She really makes you feel comfortable in what can be a very uncomfortable/emotional situation. She really knows her stuff and is great at advocating for her client. I used her toward the end of my journey as a surrogate and wish I would have used her from the start. I will for sure be calling her if I ever need a reproductive family law attorney again. I cannot recommend her enough.

Worst lawyer ever. He is a liar unprofessional. Shows up to court unprepared and mixes cases up. He never meets with both sides of the case and then gets mad when he knows he screwed up. Everyone complain to the bar association like I have and let’s get him away from being a lawyer because he is a crook

Hired Dean for a divorce in April. Ive had nothing but problems getting them to contact me or provide requested documents to protect me in my medical care. Im disabled and was abandon by my wife who took everything including my bed and couch. For over a month Ive called and left voicemails, sent emails that all go unanswered. After researching laws and ethics for attorneys Ive found him guilty of several violations. Even after informing his office in a voicemail I would file complaints with the state Ive still not recieved a call. So Im not very impressed with this man and his staff. I only pray the complaints will get him to represent me PROPERLY and his record reflect the complaints.

Adam helped me through his contract at Hope House and I greatly appreciate it. My ex had filed papers for divorce and I did not have a lawyer. Adam represented me and did a stellar job. He was kind, thoughtful, and took action exactly where it needed to be taken. At a time when I was struggling Adam was reassuring and encouraged me to pursue what made sense and not avoid certain actions based out of fear. I would recommend him a thousand times over.

I was the client for Les Wight. I hired him to handle a re-modification case that my ex-husband brought up. Mr. Wight was to respresent me to due health reasons. He did not have my best interest. He would never respond to my phone calls or emails. He would never contact me during confrences or hearings like he stated he would. papers were changed without my knowledge and he refused to help. I do not recommend Les Wight to anyone. He will not look out for you. I even offered him more money and still I got nothing. I would of been better off representing myself.

I hired Mr. McIntosh for my child's paternity/custody case he stated he was fully prepared and capable of handling my case however when the court date arrived he was completely unprepared! We completely lost our case. He is very slow to respond to client calls or emails also. I think he has too many clients and doesn't have the time or energy to give each case the care it deserves. I would not recommend him as a lawyer unless you want to waste a ton of money and lose your case after paying all that money.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
