My family and I are not from Missouri but did our best to try to find a good criminal defense lawyer because of a situation involving a family member. We hired Gary Bradley after talking to numerous criminal defense lawyers in the area, and so glad we did. He was great! Gary went above and beyond my expectation. We were happy with the outcome of the case and would highly recommend him to anyone searching for an attorney in the area.

Chase traveled nearly 200 miles round trip to be co-counsel to the attorney that I hired at no additional charge. He was brilliant in using collateral estoppel in my family law case when my son's abusive father tried to use the court to gain access to private medical information that had previously been litigated. Needless to say, the opposing party eventually dropped their motion to modify when they realized they couldn't win. In all, I am grateful to Chase and Michelle Higinbotham for their kindness, generosity, and fierce advocacy in protecting my son.

Jordan was instrumental in our appeal directly to the Missouri Supreme, bypassing the intermediate appellate court, and resulted in our making new law in MO on alcohol, prevailing on the appeal, and a new trial. After the second trial and a 30% reduction in the verdict, Jordan was once again a key member of our appellate team that saw us before the MO Supreme Court and prevailing once again. He has my complete trust and confidence.

Shawna is one of the hardest working attorneys I have ever met. She follows through to completion of the project, promptly returns phone calls, never loses composure and gets us to where we need and want to be in a cost-efficient manner. Would highly recommend for research and development, client interaction and ultimate service in her field of expertise

I retained John after a previous lawyer failed to keep pushing forward in my case, or doing anything for that matter. John has gone by the law, speaks to me realistically about my case, and has continuously pushed my case forward despite hurdles from the other party. Overall I feel like he's a great attorney because of his knowledge and history in this field.

My son sold something that is legal in Colorado, to another student at UCM, who was with the highway patrol. Stupid is not a strong enough word. I called 4 or 5 lawyers, trying to judge who should take my money and handle his case. Troy was empathetic from the first conversation. He also was very honest about the outcome. He got a good deal from the prosecutor, but then, a turn of events led him to take a chance and plead before the judge, who gave my son an SIS with loads of probation. Troy was also at least 50% less money than the other guys. I can't thank him enough. I feel he was a life saver for my son.

I worked with Tim over my legal issue. And I will say this. Tim knows his stuff very well since he's very knowledgeable of the law. When you consult with him, he will answer your questions extremely well and he will go over all of the possible outcomes that he can see for your case based on the situation. This will include all of the best and worst scenarios. In order to obtain the best scenario, you will need to do EXACTLY what he tells you to do. For example, if you have a no contact order against you like I did, no contact will mean no contact for any reason. If you violate it, you'll get a criminal charge and fall away from obtaining that good outcome. Another example is that if you have a criminal case of some nature against you that is pending or current, then that sweet deal he said he could work out for you to get it dismissed or reduced will probably be gone if you don't listen or obey the law. Overall, Tim is a very good and professional attorney. He strives on delivering good results for his clients because he doesn't just work for them, he works with them. I owe it to Tim for helping me turn my life around for that reason. He is a credit to his profession.

Marco is amazing! He went above and beyond for my case, and my case was not a typical textbook case. Everything you could think of that could go along with a divorce case did... and then some. Marco was quick to respond to my questions and concerns. He would develop new approaches, strategies, and solutions when we needed to pivot and all efforts ended in a final decision that worked to my favor. I can't tell you have many times throughout this process that I thought to myself, "Thank God I have Marco on my side". No doubt, I will be recommending Marco to any of my friends or family that need help with family law.

Steve has helped me with so many cases in so little time. Not only has he helped me with all of my legal issues, but he has helped me as a person to lead me in the right direction. Sure, he is firm with his words and means what he says, but isn't that the kind of defense you also want on your side? If he is treatedwith respect he will also give it. You come to him for help... not the other way around... you need ,to show the respect first. And correct me if I'm wrong but most people cough when they are sick !!!!!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
