My best advise is to just avoid all these ORGS. They employ attorneys and advocates who are extremely overt/covert abusive, dismissive and with zero ethics and integrity. They receive donations and federal money to do absolutely nothing to help anyone and this goes for the NMDRNM, Legal Aide and the State Bar of New Mexico. If you have a discrimination or civil rights complaint, then just do it yourself and submit it directly to them instead.

Brian was my sons attorney. We did not have. Confidence in his ability to help my son. He never gave a straight answer or explained things that only made us confused. We felt that because he was throwing in the towel so early in the case. that he didn't. really. have my sons best interest at heart. Afterall he is a Federal Public Defender and win or lose he is still going to make his paycheck. We were fortunate enough to be able to hire a private attorney who put us more at ease.

Brian Had built what I thought was a bullet-proof case, for my Expungement. He contacted and won approval from all necessary federal agencies,FBI,DOT,Sherriffs attys. But NM courts still would not allow Expung. Because the amount of beaurocracy& B.S. in NM. I do'nt believe any lawyer would have tried harder than Brian to achieve what he did & I am thankful for that!

I have a nuanced issue concerning MERS, real-estate law and contract law that I wanted to investigate. She produced a paper containing much of the knowledge I had already obtained. I believe she thinks my request to investigate the issue was either a wasted effort or unethical because I am not in foreclosure. If I were in foreclosure, I believe she would have been more interested in pursuing the issues. I may just be projecting my beliefs. Our communication was cut-off by her abruptly, so I don't feel confident I know her reasons for discontinuing our communication. Either way, your mileage may vary.

Doug was full and could not take my case but was still very helpful. I talked with countless lawyers today and he really was the nicest person I found. People like this restore my faith in the system. I would not hesitate to call him again. What a great professional . He referred me to others that were also great people. His recommendations were spot on.

Certainly, here’s a more professional review focused on requesting support for immigrants: --- As a client navigating the complexities of immigration law, I rely heavily on the expertise and support of legal professionals committed to assisting immigrants with their legal needs. Unfortunately, my experience thus far has been overshadowed by a consistently pessimistic approach, which has been quite discouraging. In such critical matters, where the stakes are incredibly high, it is essential for legal representatives to not only offer their expertise but also to provide encouragement and hope. I respectfully urge a reassessment of your approach to dealing with immigrant clients. Positive support and a proactive attitude are invaluable, helping us feel more confident and informed about our prospects. I believe that with a shift towards a more supportive and hopeful engagement, we can achieve better outcomes together. Give hope and the right information don’t be against your clients

I feel like I’m never being heard when it comes to anything dealing with my case right now. They never get back to me when I call them about anything. I’m always having to reach out constantly about my case. Mike never knows anything that’s going on with it. He’s just plain out rude. I noticed the only time they try and do or correct anything is when they’re given a bad review. So maybe they’ll actually do something now. I wouldn’t give any stars if I was allowed that option.

I have absolutely nothing but the highest praise for the services I received during the very very difficult time of my divorce. Every employee in Lynda's office made the process easy, with their kind, empathetic and professional treatment. My marriage and divorce began in a foreign country. I was led to believe my wife was still living there so I hired a lawyer and filed a divorce case there only to discover she had been living in the US since our breakup. I immediately had to hire Lynda to file in the US and chose her upon great recommendations from many people in the legal field, who speak very highly of her and her staff. The office staff was able to put together all the timelines of my international relationship in order to create and orderly and substantial case, which in two languages with lots of documentation, would have been impossible for me to do. The staff always took their time with me and deciphered all my paperwork. My hearing was actually handled by Marisol, another attorney in the office whom is fluent in Spanish, and had a perfect grasp of the language and cultural differences and nuances of both parties making the hearing process move smoothly, quickly, painlessly and in the end successfully. I highly recommend this office and both Lynda and Marisol, for anything to do with Family Law. On a scale of 1-10 I give these attorneys a 20. During the process what totally sealed the deal for me was a personal bit about Lynda, which I overheard from various staff members, and that was about her kind and generous treatment of her employees, always buying lunches etc. This type of treatment to employees is translated into her care for her clients. I am so impressed, but mostly just grateful.

Do not use this man’s services . If you are appointed this man as a public defender think again. Lahan convinced me he had the ability to fight my case over the phone months before court. The day of court all possibilities of fighting the case went out the window as he convinced me if I took it to trial the judge may punish me for wasting time ? I believe his laziness was not in my best interest as I believe if I had the funds to offer payment things would have been different. This man had no interest in fighting a case he told me he believed he could win . I would not recommend anyone to use this man as a public defender.

Has difficulty communicating on a basic level. I discovered later from her assistant that Armijo's mother had some kind of issue that was taking up this attorney's time, but a professional should be informing her client of this personally and in a timely manner (it's literally just one email/phone call), rather than said client taking the initiative to call her office and get genuine information from someone else. She's also a bit dishonest at times. This woman isn't worth it. I would strongly recommend another attorney.

Hired Latta for a divorce. Made the mistake of telling her how much money I had. Went to court 3 times. She dragged big box of stuff but had no info for the judge, when he asked. She filed very few motions to do anything. After 9 months, I had no divorce, no spousal support & no money. But she continued to bill me another $10,000 for phone calls to the opposing attorney. Total fabrication, since my ex had fired him. Never knew a bigger crook. Do not hire this phoney.

While this attorney may be adequate for straightforward and uncomplicated cases, which could be managed independently (as a Pro Se and for free), his effectiveness notably declined as my case got more complex and challenging. For cases requiring negotiation and detailed attention, seeking alternative representation is advisable. Mr. Grandjean's performance falls short when the case involves any difficulties or ongoing issues. Additionally, he will become rude, defensive and dismissive if you question what is going on or simply his tactics, he then seemed to hold a grudge and stopped fighting all together, not that he “fought” at all to begin with. His connections within the local legal community also raise concerns about impartiality and commitment. In any hearing we had, he pussed down to any attorney or judge. When thinking of an attorney, you generally want someone who doesn’t care about those things and will fight for you since that is what you are paying them to do. Mr. Grandjean seemed to not feel that way in our communications. Rather my communication and his hissy fit. Furthermore, the support staff, specifically the paralegal and receptionist, had no idea that I was a client or what my case entailed, this was over 3 months after I had paid my retainer in full and there had been no action in my case. He had 2 different assistants that seemed to know a little bit of what was going on but it seems that they couldn’t stand him either and left. I have stuck around for over 3 years now and there has still been very little action in my case and any time I called in the last year (2024) they still had no idea as to who I was or what was going on. For a more dedicated and responsive attorney, I recommend considering someone like Cheryl Saavedra, who demonstrates a strong commitment to client advocacy and effective representation. This man failed and disrespected me and my son and I am writing this so it won’t happen to you too. Mr. Grandjean, if you would like to comment a snarky and demeaning response, go ahead and make my day.

I strongly suggest you refuse to use Jeff Grandjean as your GAL. His is extremely bias. Jeff said there was no evidence, no witnesses to the abuse. He was given a lot of evidence and a list of witnesses over a year ago. I’m a witness. He never even tried to contact me or anyone else on the list. Everything in his report was in favor of the husband/father. It was almost like the abuser wrote the report himself. Now, Jeff will say he doesn’t know me, like he does with everyone who writes a bad review about him, but I introduced myself to him in the courtroom. I told him I was the witness he said didn’t exist. Then he practically ran out of the courthouse. I think he’s an incompetent coward.

Richard Queener is a scumbag. I don't say that because he didn't do the job right (although he didn't), I say this because this man will claim you didn't make payments you made and claim you still owe him thousands of dollars you have already paid. He will tell you he won't bill you until things are settled and your former spouse has to help with the payments, and then he will run up a huge tab without doing a single thing for you. He will give you incorrect legal advice that strings things out. He will charge you for things I'm now told no other lawyer would charge you for. He will charge you interest each month on an inflated unpaid balance and then charge you file maintenance fees and tax each month so that the bill gets exponentially higher. All the while KNOWING that you have paid him thousands more than his 'records' show, even when you have the invoices from those payments, they don't exist to him! He will still keep charging you for payments you've already made. He will inflate the amount you owe him and pretend he hasn't been paid thousands then remove himself from your case for 'nonpayment' and charge you fees that are higher than the original fees you were paying him to actually 'work' for you, if you can call it that. Which I wouldn't, because he doesn't care if your soon to be former spouse is mentally abusive, has had your children watch as he chokes you, has financially abused you and your kids for years, has medically abused your kids, is still financially and medically abusing your kids. In short: he will over charge you, pretend you did not pay him thousands when you did, screw with your court dates, lie to the courts and judge, charge you secret fees, not actually work on your case, completely disregard the needs of you and your children in times of great distress, make threats about pulling his representation if he doesn't like something you have to say (that you don't want to force your kids to go with an abuser), actually pull his representation a few days before a court date for inflated and incorrect unpaid balances, and so much more. Use this snake if you dare, he will make everything so much worse.

I strongly suggest not hiring Mr. Segura. He is negligent, non-communicative, and will not keep in touch with you about your case. He will make you feel UN-important, uninformed, and leave you left in the dark without a care. Thanks to Mr. Segura I almost lost my case. If I had not hired another lawyer I surely would have been in a mess due to Mr. Segura's irresponsible representation. He never met any deadlines or ever returned my emails. But he will take your money anyway. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of Gregory Segura Law, he's making a bad name for lawyers in New Mexico. The man is a bad person! - Scott Easlick

Don't hire Mr Segura, He won't fight for you, he won't return your emails, He has nothing but excuses for missed deadlines. He will take your money though, don't trust him, he cares not about you and your case, and he will leave you out to dry. That's what he did to me. - Scott : ( FYI - Couldn't vote less than 1 star, or I would...

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
