I paid a $2500 retainer to hire John Duran to defend me when I was falsely accused of a felony in Albuquerque in 2014. After I paid the retainer, there was no further communication from him, and my numerous phone calls and messages inquiring about the status of my court case went unanswered. Thankfully, the State of NM dropped the charge after 60 days with a nolle prosequi entered, as there was no valid evidence to prosecute by. I didn’t even get the courtesy of finding out my case was dismissed until a month later when I took some initiative and looked up my case on nmcourts.gov. John never once returned any of my phone calls and messages and he did absolutely nothing for me or my case. What an utter waste of $2500. This lawyer is a disgrace to the profession. Do not give him your money.

Yes this is not Judge John Duran. Review I'd for Duran and McDonald Law Firm. I hired John for a difficult custody case for my child. John was quick through the consultation and had no problem collecting his high retainer. However when court came John was late several times. Did not return any of my calls would show up and wouldn't even have a game plan. I felt that John Duran was useless never fought for my child or my parental rights. After 2 court appearance's I contacted John and McDonald's office on several occasions never returned my voicemails, and my emails. Please I urge you to not hire this lawyer.

To kind for the court room. Does not fight for you agrees to everything the other party states. Oh and let me add does not return phone calls and emails. His assistant is a rude senior citizen. Unprofessional when you pay someone thousands of dollars. They work for you not the other way around. I strongly caution you to hire another lawyer.

It's hard to know where to begin with the unprofessional treatment we received, the run around we endured, the lack of assistance and overall lack of care and communication we experienced. I am confident there are other lawyers in the area who communicate more effectively and will meet your needs. If you say it's going to be ready Monday, and you make us wait for 4 days while we still have lives going on with no communication, that is deeply frustrating. We can be understanding of delays if the paperwork was delivered as discussed with the needed inclusions.

I called their office, seeking legal help. I was told that they would contact me and let me know if Mr. Moberly could help me. I never heard from them again. I am experienced in dealing with attorneys and I know they run a conflict of interest check before they take a case. There should have been no conflict in this instance and there is no excuse for not contacting me again.

Miss Unsicker was my attorney for about a year when one day I received an email stating that she was withdrawing as counsel because she discovered a conflict. I called her office several times trying to find out what this conflict was yet I was never advised of what the conflict was . I was left with no counsel . Very poor ethics for an attorney and very irresponsible l.I wouldn't recommend her to anyone.

DO NOT HIRE THIS FIRM! THIS FIRM REPRESENTED ME AND HE DID A LOUSY JOB. HE DID NOT FILE MOTIONS IN A TIMELY MANNER AND I LOST THE CASE. HE ALSO DID NOT MENTION RELEVANT FACTS THAT I HAD TOLD HIM TO MENTION IN HIS MOTIONS, THE STRONGEST FACTS THAT COULD HAVE CHANGED THE OUTCOME OF THE CASE! NOW HE REFUSES TO REFUND MY MONEY AND I BORROWED THE MONEY TO PAY FOR THIS FIRM TO REPRESENT ME. PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THIS FIRM IS MY BEST RECOURSE SO I AM AND WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE THE PUBLIC AWARE OF THE LOW QUALITY OF THIS FIRM'S REPRESENTATION EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE!!!

I contacted JTH for representation on 3 civil complaints that I made as a plaintiff. JTH did not properly conduct a conflict check. He initially advised me with one complaint and gave me directions on how to personally file the 2 other complaints. His directions were conflicted because he knew the defendant's family. Then he changed his advice and decided to amend the complaints. When I refused to allow him to proceed and would not continue to pay him, he shouted at me and sent me numerous emails and text messages stating that I had to make the decisions to keep him. He continued to make monetary demands. He withdrew as my counsel. I was able to continue the civil process on my own as I had initially tried in the beginning with opposing counsel. Mr. Torres-Hughes had little to no experience in the process and became very unprofessional in his actions and methods. He never refunded me the $4,000+ that I paid him.

This poor excuse for an attorney was a court appointed public defender who met with me for the first time at 6 pm, out of the trunk of his car on his way home the night before my 9 am plea hearing the next morning, failed to return phone calls and emails, failed to properly prepare himself or me for what to expect from the court or the legal process, refused to dispute a false positive drug screen (while I was on supervised release pending sentencing), failed to provide any type of defense to the court, made false representations to me when I asked him to recuse himself and request a different public defender from the court , and when asked by the judge at sentencing if he had anything to say in defense of his client before sentence was imposed, responded with "Uhhhhhh.... no, your honor". At age 60, having had ZERO criminal history of any kind, accused of a non violent, non drug related, white collar crime, I found myself doing 18 months in federal prison. Avoid him at any cost.

To say that this attorney has no misconduct attached to her record is by far a misstatement I have personally witnessed the prosecutorial misconduct this lawyer committed and personally witnessed her perjuring herself to a sitting district judge as it related directly to the dismissal of her case in district Court for an instance of prosecutorial misconduct at an unbelievable egregious level conspiring with other individuals to deny the rights and freedoms afforded to the United States citizens she was put in place to protect. if she's not ashamed of herself she should be for the dishonor as well as disrespect she has brought to herself as well as her profession and the office she was imployed at. This attorney was entrusted by the public to uphold the law and make sure criminals don't evade Justice instead I personally witnessed this attorney abusing the power she was entrusted with and I personally wrote a letter to the New Mexico bar to reprimand this attorney her moral compass is in serious need of realignment . I am truly surprised she is not disbarred for the outrageous disrespect she displayed to our beloved district judges hear in Valencia county. Shame shame on you miss Campbell you have let down Valencia county and the community members you were enshrined to protect and for the illegal acts that you committed and attempted to commit upon its citizens for your benefit is appalling you should be tarred and feathered and run out of town. To all my brothers and sisters out there that have faith in Jesus Christ please pray for Miss Campbell she's in desperate need of morals so please my brothers and sisters hold her in your prayers and if you happen to encounter Miss Campbell please be very weary this individual she's lacking Christ in her life and please tell her DB sent his regards

For bring an attorney he was not only unprofessional, he acted rude, arrogant, pompus, and should be reprimanded for his shortsighted line of questioning and gross incompetence. I am a SENIOR CITIZEN, GIVE ME A BRAKE. I Have sustained multiple head injuries, more than a dozen automobile accidents, (always a passenger), a survivor living through several vicious attacks; to be called a "LIAR" by a snotty-nosed, wet behind the ears individual, who hids out in a "Government" Office, pretending to be assisting Seniors. Although We may be disadvantaged financially, we deserve equal respect and service as any other citizen. This Michael Mcguire, asks me several questions, I answer truthfully, he repeats what I say. I say yes, I continue to inform in further detail. He says, "YOUR LYING! YOU HAVE TO TELL THE TRUTH OR NOBODY WILL HELP YOU!" The nerve! He says, hold on a second, let me run that by one of my collegues, because I don't think I want to take this case! Wow! Unbelieveable! It's like some young persons go to college, earn a degree and think they have a free pass to dis the elderly, disabled, and disadvantaged. We get nailed by unscrupulous, money hungry, wolves just to be verbally smacked upside the head by one of those so called attorneys still earning his wings. Shame on you MM. Shame on you. Develop a back bone to genuinely help out those "more complex cases." Don't say "no other attorney is going to help you." Dream snatcher! As long as we live in America this will be a government for the people and by the people. I know things in general do not appear to be for the regular folks, but we still have a voice. I'm going to use mine to promote Equal Justice under the Laws of this Nation.

This " Judge" allows my wife's ex who is a local DJ with child abuse history as well as several substances in his system to have full custody. As my wife has no criminal or drug history. The DJ was not arrested according to APD because he " did not penetrate the minor" who reported him. This Judge is crooked as Ron and Rhonda Gonzales brag openly about paying off the judge to the children. The children are not allowed by Gonzales family communications with their mom. Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?

  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
