I had a life altering accident and did not know where to turn. I found Michael Loos online. He was so helpful, caring and ready to help. They put together my case of over a year and a half of surgeries and rehab. The whole staff was always helpful and caring. Ultimately, they got me the best possible settlement. Although my injuries are life altering, the settlement is comforting that I will have what I need for my needs in the future. I would highly recommend him and the firm. SJ

I am so grateful to Hollie and her team for everything they have done to help me with my case. Mine was unique and she really did her research to help me! She is so professional, knowledgeable and her team are so supportive and understanding about the emotions involved. She took the time to answer all my questions and concerns. She kept me informed on every step. She cares about families and what is in the best interest of the child and really had my back from the start. Hollie and her team gave me so much confidence, helped me gain a backbone to stand up for myself and my child and made it such a smooth process. She really stood up for us and got things done so that we can move forward with our lives. We are so happy how everything is turning out and we are forever grateful to her! Words cannot express how amazing she and her team are!! I highly recommend her to anyone needing an attorney! Absolutely the best out there♡♡!!!

I had the pleasure of working with Nicholson Law, and I can't speak highly enough about my experience. From start to finish, Melissa and Erica were incredibly organized, making what could have been a stressful process smooth and manageable. I always felt heard, and it was clear that my best interests were their top priority at every step. Trust is crucial when it comes to legal matters, and I felt completely confident in their guidance and expertise. They were also prompt in responding to any questions or concerns I had, ensuring I was always informed and had autonomy. I highly recommend Nicholson Law to anyone in need of reliable, compassionate, and professional legal support.

I needed someone who could explain the process I was about to embark on and give me the advice and patience I needed during a really difficult time. Melissa and her team showed me early on they were reliable, compassionate, and knowledgeable. It made this process so much easier knowing I could count on her to represent me. Melissa and team did an amazing job. Thank you!

My experience with Erika Olson was nothing short of phenomenal, wonderful and perfect. I needed a quick and relatively small task, a document review and relevant advice, but the overall topic is of high importance to me and my family. Erika found the sweet spot of providing me with the perfect amount of help, without adding unnecessary extra time or going down rabbit holes. I very much appreciate her help, and Erika should now consider me as a client for life.

I would definitely highly recommend this law firm. I give them a 10+ for responding to phone calls and emails, reasonable fees, educated and experienced staff, good work ethic, helpful, empathetic and produced some excellent briefs that won the case. Lindsey Harris and Rebekkah Mouw both worked diligently and did a superb job putting together the briefs and documents for this case. I flew in from California and Rebekkah met me at the Courthouse and her arguments before the Judge, cross-examination of witnesses and experience with Conservatorship law resulted in a positive outcome. I hired and conducted business over the phone with these lawyers from California and asked if they could litigate a Conservatorship case in a town 3-hours away from their home office and they responded "no problem". I had read previous clients positive comments and reviews and after interviewing them over the phone I decided to hire Harris Law & Trust. All staff were very professional and helpful and worked diligently since we had only 8 days to get all paperwork and briefs filed at the respective courthouse. I'm so happy with their services and their efforts to drive three hours from their office to handle this case. If I have any further legal issues in South Dakota I would definitely contact them in the future to represent me. Thank you to all the wonderful and helpful staff that I spoke to ...

A public defender would have done just as much, if not more, helping me with and defending my case for probably less than $1000 instead of the $10,000 +tax that I paid John. He came and visited me at the jail soon after he was hired. Was very polite, friendly and professional. Talked alot about his experience at trial and cases won. Then he finally asked about my case and after telling him everything I could, all he said was, "Well, there are some problems with the State's case against you and I will use that to see what kind of deal I can get you". He didnt say what the problems were or anything about possible defense. He just figured me guilty and needing a good deal. That meeting lasted a half hour maybe. I patiently waited in jail for news from John. I wrote him numerous letters with more information I remembered that I thought could be helpful and asked him what was happening but no response. I think it was 9 or 10 months before John shows up and says if I plead guilty to one felony count they will drop the 14 other counts against me and cap my sentence at 5 years. My charge carried a maximum of 10 so I specifically asked if they might try to be sneaky and tack on an extra 5 years suspended to that 5 year cap and he said "no, it's a 5 year cap". So I told him I'd do it then ^ then another 5 months goes by and when I finally go to court to plea, my plea deal magically changed from a cap of 5 on one count to 3 counts alltogether and all time would be suspended on counts 2 & 3. I told John I didnt feel right and was worried about all that suspended time he said I wouldnt get. He told me not to worry about it and that since they reneged on the plea deal that I didnt have to take it but then he would have to start all over. It had been over a year and I wasnt going to sit in Jail another year waiting for him to lie to me about another plea deal. At my sentencing I got the 5 years PLUS 5 more suspended on count one an additional 10 years suspended on each of the other two counts which weren't even supposed to be part of it. So, John lied to me twice, never intended from the get-go to try and fight for me in court, went months without any response to my letters and when he did visit the two times probably were less than 1 hour together. Two court dates which would be an hour(rounded up) each. One hour(rounded up) talking on the phone with my Father. And I highly doubt any more than a half hour negotiating a deal I never got. So, for $10,000+tax I got 4 1/2 hours work(if you can even call it that). The only reason I'm giving two stars instead of one is because I was originally looking at 150 years alltogether and ended up doing 2, most of which was in county not knowing what was going on but the outcome could have been way worse. And because the first two attorneys we called wanted $20,000. So John was half price. But I guess you get what you pay for and in this case, I think that was as little as possible. Nothing more than what a public defender would do and maybe even less. I would suggest getting a public defender. Sure they might be somewhat inexperienced and have a high case load but they respond to letters and visit whenever needed. They are always around. And, for less than $1000 attorney fees (if found guilty) you probably get the same amount of effort, possibly more attention(wouldnt take a whole lot) and probably the same exact outcome in the end so I wouldnt waste your money. Put it in a savings account and have a nice head start at getting your feet back on the ground and to a new & better life once you get out of jail.

After speaking with a attorney from the NRA about my situation. His first question was, does the attorney you hired work for the police department? He also said that he had never heard of such a blatantly currupt sherriffs department violation of my civil rights. Mr Grey to date has not yet informed me of one of them being unconstitutional. I would recommend any other attorney to represent you. I have been trying to contact him for over a month, and no one will call me back to fire him.

I retained Eric Hardy for possibly the easiest custody case imaginable (unmarried and father serving 30yr prison sentence with long criminal history, legally found mentally ill, and established domestic abuse) after giving him thousands it took him 14 months to file and bring to court. He didn’t preform anything he professed he could or would including even getting child support set up through the state. After court he didn’t even bother drafting a single order which I ended up getting from other attorney 6 months later. I now have had joint custody with a absent sociopath “coparent” for the last 3 years because this attorney didn’t even care enough that my child’s rights where represented and best interest outweighed her fathers. He still sends a bill for additional 8k every two weeks. Do yourself a big favor and throw 10 grand out a window and google parenting plan, fill out and submit. TRUST ME, THAT IT WILL SERVE YOU MORE THAN Eric Hardy will. Eric... call me!?

John Murphy is hands down the best and most professional attorney in South Dakota. John saved my life and exposed the corruption of the States Attorney. I was facing 17 felonies and 3 of those felonies had me looking at 130 years. John beat all of my charges and I plead to a class 5 felony and was released. The state put professional witnesses on the stand to help the prosecutor and John Murphy had them looking stupid. I'm sorry I forgot her name but John has a top notch paralegal that was awesome and she worked night and day to help John prepare everything for my case. After seeing John in the courtroom I was to take all the felonies to trial because he's so good and the DA got scared and offered me a sweet plea deal. What also makes John the best is that he's a pro at both state and federal law so he managed both jurisdictions at the same time saving me from having to sit more months or years in jail. I owe Murphy Law my life.

Terri Williams Is the best attorney in South Dakota. She has an impeccable reputation. I was referred to her by another attorney ( #1 before his retirement) he said she's the only person who can beat him in court, so I did. Hire her! She's also a business attorney! You won't regret it. She flipped through my thousands of pages of documents like they were nothing. Literally memorized my file. It was incredible. I have never an attorney met anyone as calm, and smart as Terri. I absolutely love her! Her billing is impeccable. She's so honest, she never overbilled me. She's so honest, she would make an excellent Judge. Highly-rated & recommended.

In the beginning it seemed like he really wanted to help n represent me properly, but as you can see( 1 star) that went away quickly. I have no idea what’s going on with my case, he has failed to communicate with the state on my behalf, I’ve been constantly in the dark, he has advised me of false information time and time again, also he has me set for a COP (change of plea) when a plea bargain has never even been presented to me, n last but not least this secretary/ paralegal(whoever answers the phone on his behalf) is beyond disrespectful and unprofessional. Instead of hearing out what I was worried about she continually cut me off n got to the point she was screaming at me and hung up. And once I called back she continued yelling and screaming at me for no apparent reason. I can understand if I was getting outa hand or yelling or cussing around or at her but that wasn’t the case at all. (My phone was on Bluetooth in the car n I was at work driving with my boss when it all happened) by the end of the phone call she still had no idea what I was even trying to ask her, because she wouldn’t listen. N when asked to speak with Adam she wouldn’t check if he was in just yelled “nope he’s not in”. it has been the most unpleasant experience I’ve ever had with a lawyer in my life. He has sprung things on me in court that have had devastating effects in said case, I could go on n on. He wasnt always bad, I’d be lying if I said that but when weighing good and bad the bad definitely outweighs the good. I do not suggest hiring or even using him as a court appointed attorney.

Questions? We have answers

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
