I hired James for an unusual case and he was superb. He listened...REALLY listened, then he asked questions, presented multiple options and allowed me to make the decision on the course of action. Once I did, he methodically prepared prior to court. He compiled evidence, established timelines and culled the information according to how pertinent and impactful it would be. In court he was articulate and firm without being overly aggressive. During cross examination he showed how, when and where the plaintiff had lied. I received an outcome beyond what I hoped for. While the circumstances of hiring James were tough, his work was beyond reproach. I highly recommend him.

Very cool old building! It's one of the catch 22's; it's a lawyer, but good at explaining the law. Loved the old building and antiques! I don't disclose what I was doing, but my Journey through time has been pretty interesting and at times, intense.

Adeline saved our situation and we are very grateful to her; she started over the whole file and took the time to review each element and tried to understand what was wrong in our first application with our previous attorney. She finally found why and was very professional during the whole process, she is sincere, smart and competent. One thing very important, she is reviewing every single element added to your file before submitting it. Now our company rely on her for all immigration case.

Austin truly cares about his clients and you are definitely not just another case when Austin is representing you. He always gets back to you to answer all questions either through email or a phone call or both when necessary. He makes sure to pay attention to details and he will see your case through from start to finish. Austin is truly one of the "good guys" a true modern day Perry Mason mold of a lawyer who will genuinely do his best to represent you and he will not just try to push you through the system like a lot of lawyers want to do these days. He has a five star rating with his communication skills and with his knowledge of Vermont laws. I never plan to ever be in trouble with the law again but if ever the need arises I will not hesitate to have Austin represent me once again.

I have spent a number of sessions with Mr Bartsch over the past three years and have come away feeling fully satisfied with the service. I think the aspect I like the most about Adam is that he is not in a big hurry to charge for every minute of his time. He waits until tangible results are produced and then bills you for specific services rendered. The results are of high quality and the charges are fair. You can't say that about all lawyers. Additionally, Adam is just interesting to talk to. He knows his area of expertise extremely well and he is a good listener.

I'm a single mother with one child and was in a very serious car accident in 2000. I broke my left arm in a way that had to be put back together with plates and screws, And needed two surgeries .I was so scared for myself and my daughter who was two back then, Thinking how am I going to provide for us ? I also had to take in the idea that I might never be able to use my left arm again. I was reffered to Mark Sylvester who since the minute I met him I knew I could trust and rely on him. He was 100% trustworthy, He was knowledgeable,Quick and very thorough in my case. He also had alot of patience considering the emotional mess that accident made me. He stood by my side and guided me through every process of my law suit. I learned alot from him . He became a friend.I was a success in recovery and now I'm a Massage Therapist ! He will now and always be my lawyer and I highly recommend him.

IFound Thomas Bixby to be the most supportive caring Lawyer and council directing me in the utmost professional manner (unlike his opponent). He treats you as if you were his family through and through. I can not say enough about the positive experience I had with him in my injury case. What A Guy......sensitive and caring. Very sincere. He kept me well informed of the case at hand.......I never thought I would ever enter into such an experience.......but in the face of dealing with the negative aspects of injury Thomas Bixby helped me to understand legitimate law............Thank You Tom : )

I was accused of making a false phone call to 911. Williston Police tried to charge me with making the phone call, and causing a "public safety hazard". They were seeking a written apology (most likely to be published in the paper) and a $1000 fine to cover "Fire Department" coasts. My father is an NYC firefighter - and that wasn't happening. Ian did not hesitate when I told him to tell the Fire and Police Departments to pound sand, and I would NOT be writing a check for $0.01. I was ready to take it to court, but because of Ian, the Fire Department and Williston PD folded, and the charges were dropped. As Ian will admit, he is not the "least expensive" attorney in Burlington - however, I'd rather be the one with the gun at the knife fight. Right? So, thank you to Ian, for handling my situation quickly, quietly and getting my desired outcome. I will recommend Ian given the chance; and although I hope to never need his assistance again, I wouldn't hesitate to hire him or his firm.

Take a 70-year-old, sleep-deprived, bleary-eyed, city-dwelling, out-of-state grandmother caring for a newborn, making an early-morning grocery run for her children and their family, driving an unfamiliar vehicle on foreign country roads. Combine all that with a local sheriff aiming a radar gun. The result is a speeding ticket which, despite a stellar driving record, would have wrecked havoc with this grandmother's already hefty insurance premium. I couldn't return to Vermont to fight the ticket myself, so I hired Evan to represent me in the case, hoping to have the ticket reduced to a non-moving violation. What did I get? Excellent representation that resulted in dismissal of all charges! Thank you, Evan. You are a godsend.

Daniel McManus took on a case which involved a very disturbed individual, my Brother in law. He was a gentleman through and through who did not pull any punches and always gave it to us straight. His knowledge from both sides of the table proved indespensable. He avoided trial and the outcome of the case was extremely favorable considering what he was up against!!

I am writing this review not only for Matt, who has shown me great kindness in helping me with a few difficult and very stressful situations with tenants, but also for landlords who need help. It’s hard to find an attorney who mainly specializes in landlord tenant law. Many who have some degree of experience are quick to bring up a retainer without really knowing or learning much about your situation. Matt is willing to listen and help put you in the right direction. He’s calm, intelligent and well versed in landlord tenant law. I always feel better after consulting with him, which gives me direction, confidence and knowledge in handling the situation. I have come out on top of bad situations tenants have perpetrated due to consulting with and listening to Matt’s advice. He’s reasonable and generous with his time, which manifests a lifelong clientele.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
