I hired Deirdre to review a divorce agreement I had worked through with a mediator with my soon to be ex-husband. Divorce can be clouded with lots of emotions and just wanting the process to be smooth and easy- she went through the agreement with me and made sure that it objectively made sense in the long run- helped me put aside some of those difficult emotions to come to something that made sense. I greatly appreciate the time, effort and patience she had with me to work through that process.

Having gone through 4 home transactions in the last 30 years, I can say that I have never experienced a real estate attorney who is more thorough or comfortable to deal with than Mark Scheier. Mark makes himself available through the entire transaction process and is a pleasure to work with. From start to finish, Mark took the panic out of the process for me, and insured that everything was completed in a timely fashion.

Mark has done mortgage loan closings for my company since 2012. He and his staff are always extremely professional and a pleasure to work with. Mark is also very responsive to phone calls and emails, often returning messages after hours and even on weekends and Holidays. We have been very happy with his work and plan to continue to use him for future closings.

My divorce was not contentious, but I needed someone to look out for MY interests, after my now-Ex retained a lawyer and tried to pass him off as a mediator. I don't think there was any mal-intent going on, but I needed to make sure MY interests were being preserved. She listened to my desired goals, where I thought there could be some negotiations, and she handled it from there. It's a stressful time, and was glad she was there to help me through it all. The outcome was as expected.

My divorce process became more contentious than I originally anticipated and Patrice provided excellent guidance throughout while efficiently managing my legal costs. She was professional and well prepared for our temporary support court hearing and was also very effective in final negotiations with my ex-husband's lawyer which led to a quick pre-trial hearing in front of the judge. She shows compassion without prying into personal matters and takes the time to evaluate the case fully to determine the best outcome for her client. I feel fortunate to have had Patrice by my side during this challenging time to represent me and protect my interests.

Patrice was with me every step of the way when I was going through my divorce. She was receptive to my needs, but also was very pragmatic when it came to actual litigation. She never allowed me to have unrealistic expectations. Going through a divorce is a very emotional time and Patrice let me have those emotional responses, but also let me know what was and was not realistic.

Lissa took on my case as a plaintiff for a 209A Restraining Order case. Lissa was easily accessible for questions and addressed any questions or fears I had throughout the RO process. She regularly assured me that she would not allow me to be bullied or intimidated by the defendant and his attorney at any point throughout the RO process, and this reassurance helped me feel secure and not alone during a very uncertain time. She won me a one-year extension of my RO and navigated the complexities of me sharing a lease with the defendant with ease. I was able to safely return to my home after couch surfing out of fear for weeks, and the relief of being able to sleep in my own bed and move out with dignity was largely due to her advocacy and diligence.

When I was injured at work, I had no idea what I was in for. I am so grateful to have Steve as my attorney. He is amazing! He is extremely knowledgeable and responsive, and he explains everything from beginning to end. He is so down-to-earth, very easy to talk to, and a straight shooter; he tells it exactly like it is. He guided me through everything and made my life and this stressful process so much easier. Colleen is also amazing! She is very knowledgeable, proactive, and quick to respond, and she was a tremendous help to me through this process. Steve and Colleen are a dynamic team, and I can't say enough wonderful things about them. If I could give them ten stars, I would. I went through hell with my work injury, but because I had Steve representing me and Colleen helping me throughout the process, they made it so much easier for me so I could focus on taking care of myself. I did very well in the end, and without a doubt, it was all because of Steve! One of the best decisions I ever made! Thank you, Steve and Colleen! You are by far the best! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

While working at a seasonal contract position, I was on my feet for many hours a day as a private chef. My knee began hurting but I didn't think much of it until one day I couldn't put any weight on it at all. I went to the doctor to discover I had an overuse injury. The workers comp insurance instantly denied me and also told me there is no compensation for over use injuries. This is where my journey with Mr. Kantrovitz begins. I searched the internet for a lawyer because I believed I should be compensated and I also wanted to know my legal rights. When I reached out to him I was a little hesitant because of what the insurance had told me about overuse injuries. Once I explained my story, he accepted my case with no hesitation. In this moment, I felt hope again because picturing an injury that had me debilitated and unable to meet my financial needs was scary. First thing I did was listen to his advice and continued to see the doctor. Along with documenting and recording all medical transactions. In the beginning I wasn't able to get full care until the insurance would accept my claim. Mr. Kantrovitz worked very efficiently and with great confidence to win my case. I found him to be very knowledgeable, so I put all of my faith in his experience and guidance. On the day of our court case, there were a few tense moments when the other lawyer tried to make harmful claims against my case, but Mr. Kantrovitz was prepared and his responses were documented as well. This is what won my case! I would definitely recommend his services to anyone dealing with a workers comp situation. His knowledge and experience won't let you down. Thank you for such a professional and positive experience. And much of the credit goes to his Office Manager Colleen! (She is an absolute gem. Aware, knowledgeable and makes you feel well taken care of!)

I hired the Foley & MacArdie firm after my now former wife surprised me, last spring, with her intention to file for divorce. The other surprise (without belaboring the unfortunate details) was that she hired a firm whose principal surreptitiously assigned a terrible, amoral lawyer to handle her case without my former wife's knowledge or consent. It turns out that said opposing lawyer has a 1-star AVVO review, consistently horrific AVVO reviews by her former clients, and had been disciplined on multiple occasions by state licensing authorities. Once my former wife found out about this surreptitious reassignment, she demanded that her case be reassigned to another attorney. Kathy Foley and her team were cognizant of that lawyer's bad reputation, and handled the case with wisdom, sensitivity, and respect for the well being of BOTH myself and my former wife, just as I wished. I urge anyone who desires a divorce to be settled amicably--handled with the goal of avoiding unnecessary conflict & expense, and promoting a constructive post-divorce relationship--to give the Foley & MacAdie firm your most serious consideration! Based on my own experience, they deserve your confidence and trust.

Not very strong in court and charged a lot for a little .I was pretty disappointed at her work .She wasn't.really very helpful in preparing for.court .She gave into every demand other side made .Seemed to not stand strong for her client .I really feel 5000.00 for one half day in court and.a bunch of scribbled on papers as an agreement was not very professional .In the end agreements need to be able to be read . Same service on other side paid 900 and.other side got more quality counsel than the 5000 payment .She seems very nice as a person but for legal matters I would never refer anyone to her .I feel we threw a lot of money away .She did nothing really but make.a lot of money off us. Her secretary on the other hand was always helpful .As much as she was able.to be .

This "supposed" attorney couldn't care less about elder protection, and changed a family member's Will unethically and by taking instructions from a non-client. Absolutely not, this attorney, hardly did anything for me. I did all the leg work and was charge an outrageous price. All the small personal talk he does he charges even though you 'r not even engaged in the conversation. He will charge for every email, voice mail, phone call, text, physical conversations, even exaggerates on the time. I confronted him by addressing the bill with him, he stated he had a 1 hour conversation and when I showed him my AT&T bill that showed his name, number and number of minutes he said that he still continued reviewing the documents...the conversation took 2 minutes!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
