I hired Mr. Lacour to represent me for an assault charge. Mr. Lacour was very professional and productive. He was able to get my charges thrown out. I will refer him to any one who is the situation that I was in.

To make it short and simply this lawyer took my money and now will not answering any of my calls. I have been leaving messages with the person who answer the number but still no return call from Christopher. Its sad a lawyer will do this to people who hired him to help them in some way. Meet Mr. Lacour and paid him, he put on a good talk, has not heard anything from him since I paid him. BAD BUSINESS MR. LACOUR! DO NOT USE HIM!

Would leave zero stars if that was an option. Never returns calls and takes weeks and sometimes months to reply to an email. Never updates on what’s going on and acts like she could care less about the case. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED!!

My husband hired her to get visitation rights to his kids and figure out correct child support. Sanders never gave him the correct paperwork. NEVER told him to bring any tax forms or pay stubs to court. He ended up paying $4000 a month for 3 kids and NEVER gets to see them. He doesn't make $4000 a month. It was like she was working for his ex-wife and not him.

I recently needed a lawyer for a case that was in Ruston, Louisiana. Since I am a Baton Rouge resident, a friend recommended Tiffany Sanders for representation in that area. I opted into the recommendation, especially considering that I support black businesses, FIRST. I paid the FULL $1000 amount up front (with zero partial payments) to establish our client-attorney relationship as well as my seriousness in needing immediate representation. Astonishingly, Sanders was a no show for my first court date, and ALSO did not appear at my second court date after having to reschedule due to her lack of presence. She shifted the blame to her secretary, indicating a schedule misunderstanding, but failed to communicate any of this beforehand. As HER CLIENT, I was inconvienced twice by making two round trips from Baton Rouge to Ruston, wasting my limited work vacation days, paying for hotel expenses & gas, and following up with an attorney who’s not returning my phone calls or messages. Her secretary said she would agree to reimburse me for my expenses but that turned tout to be a lie as well. A third court date was rescheduled, and I was still not receiving any confirmations or updates from Sanders. I called and spoke to her secretary the week prior to the 3rd court date telling her to return my call because i wanted a refund and still didn't receive a response from her . I couldn’t take another chance since she was still unresponsive, but my court case took precedence so I was left to hire another attorney. Sanders ended up coming to the third court date without notice, and found out in person that I had other representation which confirms her horrible lack of communication and preparation. After my case concluded, I continued to call her office, leave messages, and requesting a refund since I’m basically compensating her as a failed show with zero help. Her unprofessionalism not only made me spend money on two WASTED trips across the state, but also resulted in additional attorney fees to hire someone who would actually help me in my legal matter. Isn’t that what a lawyer is for? It’s no surprise that Sanders STILL has not returned my numerous calls, and hasn’t even bothered telling me that she won’t refund my money....just zero communication. I feel completely taken advantage of, and I think she is not concerned since I’m not local to the area and limited to telecommunication. Would she take me more serious if i was a CAUCASIAN MALE? This puts a strain on the support of black businesses, and encourages a distrust in our legal system. Paying clients deserve to feel supported by someone who studies the law, and Sanders was the absolute worst representation I could’ve imagined. I look back on the recommendation, and realize that she picks and chooses which clients she will follow through with and which she could care less about. An attorney should not be biased, should not leave her clients to figure out the system on their own, and should equally represent all clients regardless of circumstances. She is a joke and I am outraged at the financial, legal, and work related strain she has put on my life.

I hired her for a criminal case after being disappointed with the court appointed attorney. I thought her fee was a little on the high end but I now realize she earned every dollar. She communicated with me and even gave me her cell number to call her anytime I had any concerns. I even called her at 1:45 am BC I was so nervous about my trial. She saved my life and I will always be thankful for her and how she went over and above for me.

David Michael Williams has been ineffective in preparation for trial and pre-trial of the allegations against me and did not attend my court appointed hearings until after I filed a complaint with the Public Defender’s office. The only options David Michael Williams provided me was a plea bargain and later PTI only after filing complaints with the Public Defender’s office. David Michael Williams has no opinion or refuses to give his opinion of the allegations against me in relation to the evidence held by the Office of the District Attorney. David Michael Williams did not wish to represent me and has continued to lie and work against my best interests. He has refused to advocate on my behalf and has offered to pay my PTI expenses of $750 if I will accept PTI, higher insurance rates and go to classes. David Michael Williams stated cases rarely make it to trial and he is unsure of how to proceed. He has also stated that this case is “over his head” and that he doesn’t have sufficient time to work on my case.

I was checking on needed legal matters due to a parent being in hospice. Gwenda Lamb seems to be moody and was like two different people. She behaved as expected during the initial phone call. During our second conversation, her behavior and tone was not appropriate. When I requested that she let me know if anything else was needed regarding my parent, she responded with an attitude, "Why should I contact you? Can't she write her own checks for payment?" My belief is that she only cared about money and was insulting. I told her she needed to be more considerate. We did not use her services.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
