Left us hanging after two years of workin on a seemingly cut and dried just two weeks before our court date with nowhere to turn for help. Providence Hospital and surgeon Aaron Brown had way too many attorneys. Our guess is Kapolchok took a payoff. Many of the attorneys were his friends.

We had a business / contract dispute case. We retained Adam, who assured us we had a case. After he went through the large retainer, he believed that we would win the case and offered to the case on contingency. After 2 years of spotty communication he changed his legal theory and then accused us of lying to him and withdrew from the case. We retained another attorney who told us that we did have a case, but because Adam did not get a forensic accounting of the business (which should have been done first and foremost) and discovery was closed, it would be hard to impossible to come to a damages and value that was lost.

The Alaska Public Defender Agency does a great job considering its budgetary constraints. They provide more bang for the buck than private counsel, in my experience. The problems Jeremy Ward talks about are not problems with the Alaska Public Defender Agency. They are problems with our society and government as a whole, caused largely by the breakdown of morals and the extended family. Don't criticize the agency with their finger in the dike trying to hold off the overwhelming flood of dysfunctional people. Criticize what caused that flood. And DO something about it. Volunteer!

Not exactly up front and thorough during my process, was left in the dark about major decisions, was told I couldn’t ask the doctor certain questions, advised me to settle on a case that I now realize should have stayed open due to the medical issue I’m still having. I’m not gonna say stay away from this attorney but I’ll NEVER openly recommend this attorney to anyone EVER.

Disappointed with the quality of legal "representation." One would be better off pro se than waste your money with this attorney. I hired this attorney on the pretense that he would work hard for his client(s), not for the defendants (insurance company.) Mr. Coe does not work FOR his client nor does he put effort into cases he "feels has no value." I would fire him, though as this case was on a contingency fee, no better attorney would like to share the proceeds and take on this case.

Mr. Fullerton seemed to know the law fairly well, but he was not particularly pleasant to deal with. While a confident attorney may inspire trust, I felt that he was arrogant to the point of being smug. His demeanor, for me, overshadowed his performance. This was not a particularly challenging legal issue that I suspect most lawyers could have handled pretty easily so I cannot specifically speak to his knowledge or ability with a difficult case. I wouldn't want to deal with him again, however.

Kidd is a really bad person who should who should wear a nazi symbol. Its ashame this kind of inexperienced- lawyer is destroying childrens minds by trying to put them on a stand to testify in court against their parents, specifically a 5 & 7 yr old. Kidd is no different than fentanoyl in our community because he is destroying young minds, causing kids to grow too quick & making a kids environment tough to grow up in-- which will in return cause kids to act out in the future and even as adults. Kidd needs to be counseled & sent to classes to understand how he is destroying the minds of children before he should be allowed to continue practice law!

This attorney actually instructed me to write a letter to the judge. It was eight pages long and took me a long time to compile. His lead attorney told me that it should never have been written. That the judge would never read it etc... I got charged for all of this wasted time and communication. He refused to listen to me when I tried to follow the counselors suggestion to me. This is the counselor that he suggested I go to. He in my opinion did not communicate well with his lead. He neglected to inform me of the judges final ruling but for about three weeks insisted that he had. Once he discovered the mistake he emailed me saying, " Upon further review of your file we have discovered that we have not sent you the judges final ruling after all." They did however find the time at my expense to send it to my ex husband.

Mr. Kittleson, You have one rude office manager that I could not make an appointment with. I called today for an appointment and your office manager concern was $150 consultation. She had no knowledge whether you could handle my landlord case at all. She hung up twice on me without answering my questions. Your office manager was condescending and unprofessional. I have come to the conclusion that if you have an insubordinate and uneducated person such as your office manager who states that I should find a reputable lawyer then it is time you find a NEW office manager.

Big mistake hiring this lawyer. She had exactly 1 cross-examination question ready. Although I sent her office 15 photos of evidence, she presented 4 in court. Twice, she helped the opposing side when they couldn't produce witness information. Hire another attorney. She is a waste of time and money.

The man is a disaster. He does not respond to email or phone calls, he loses documents (and not just once!) He has not plan or strategy. He takes months to respond to pleadings, sometimes never getting around to responding to them at all. Recommend him to your worst enemy or your ex-wife!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
