I was terminated from an employer for making a simple ADA request and Kelly McClintock along with her team helped me through the ordeal and were able to get the company to provide a severance package. On top of that, they went above and beyond when the employer disputed my unemployment benefits by saying I had quit. Their knowledge in employment law and unemployment benefits are second to none. Throughout the process I felt heard, understood and supported and could not have asked for better representation. You will not find better attorneys to represent you.

SLS was extremely helpful in dealing with a nightmare landlord. My attorney, Gayle, always answered my emails quickly, and saved my roommate and I a few thousand dollars. I genuinely don’t know what we would have done if I didn’t have access to SLS.

She insulted me using sexist, belittling language, and her defensiveness about this negatively affected the subsequent legal services I received. Additionally, she went on vacation to Africa without any form of notice (I actually feared for her well-being, only to find her at her desk weeks later), failing to provide timely response to issues she had been retained to address.

Debra Keehn was able to bring reason and resolution to my my case, this was an extremely complicated case with a high conflict opposing party. Debra exhibited high ethical morals, clear concise direction and last but not least a measure of compassion I had yet to find in the 4 years of litigation in the family court system. Debra was more than my lawyer, she was the advocate for myself and my children, I give her the highest possible endorsement!

Deb Keehn is a brilliant attorney with the highest level of integrity. Deb handled an extremely complex, extremely high-conflict custody case for my family and through every difficult twist and turn of the case she managed to keep her cool and composure. Deb’s sensitivity to others makes it possible for her to persevere through the most difficult cases. She is highly respectful, courteous, and insightful. Her calm demeanor allows her to manage extremely stressful situations with diplomacy and kindness. In addition to her exceptional talents as an attorney, Deb’s unique professional background in psychology and social work also serves her well. Deb has the most finely tuned instincts and insights of anyone I know and her ability to empathize with others helps minimize the damage inherent in a high-conflict custody case. Most importantly, these abilities allow Deb to help the most vulnerable people in high conflict divorce and custody cases, the innocent children caught in the middle of warring parents. This unique ability certainly served Deb well in my family’s case, and more importantly it served my child well. I cannot recommend Deb Keehn highly enough. She is quite simply the best!

Our family has utilized the legal services of Steven Garris for more than 30 years. He has always provided excellent advice and promptly did all of the legal work we needed right after we asked for it. That has ranged from real-estate work to estate planning. We wouldn't trust any other attorney in the area with our legal work nearly as much as we trust the Garris law office.

Steve Garris and the eponymous law firm has provided me and members of my family with prompt, well-considered legal counsel as well as doing so in a compassionate manner. We have used the Firm’s services for over a decade in areas of law as diverse as family, estate/trust and criminal issues. In particular, I am very grateful for the kindness and professional manner Steve showed to my mother when handling her personal affairs. I recommend the use of the Garris firm without reservation. We hired Steve outside of Avvo. The Garris firm is well known to local area residents.

I have the utmost respect for him and his work and I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Absolutely incredible experience with my chapter 7 bankruptcy. The entire team was nothing but kind and prompt to respond if I needed anything. I think my process went well because I understood that there were going to be a lot of documents I would need to provide and I was always ready to get them to the lawyers promptly. I can't thank their entire team enough for giving me a fresh start. I would highly recommend them in the future.

I went to them to help with my debt. I wasnt sure if I should even start filing, as I am a single parent with low income. Michelle told me they could work with me. I filed and then was unable to afford the bi weekly payment (job loss) so my case was dismissed. Now I have to pay for a bankruptcy that never happened but my biggest problem is I have asked for receipts of my payments, so I can keep track of the balance and they refuse to provide the info. I have asked them for over a year.

I went to fessler because there were missing bank accounts for my dad's estate. The greedy personal representative tried to keep everything she could from the estate. Fessler petitioned the bank and when the evidence came in, fessler changed his mind ABSOLUTELY DID NOT WANT THE jUDGE TO KNOW! He told me for 6 weeks that we would set a hearing after we receive the evidence then changed his mind. He is unprofessional, corrupt, unethical and was useless in my case.

If you need a divorce lawyer look elsewhere. Paul C. Fessler is neglectful, unethical, and the only thing he’ll provide is a lack of representation. All the things I signed for in the retainer with Paul C. Fessler of Fesser Law P.C. (aka Paul Fessler) were never honored. 1. Diligent representation by the firm. 2. Mediation and Discovery. 3. Bill rates. 4. Communications, and 5. Refundable retainer. He performed no mediation or discovery in 9 months, he wouldn’t even have a conversation with me during this time, never spoke other than to hire him. He took advantage of me by draining my retainer. I was charged the higher! of the 2 rates the lawyer rate of $250/hr vs, the paralegal rate of $100/hr. She was doing the work, yet not a single $100/hr. paralegal charge, even the frivolous charges were billed high. Second, in over 9 months I only received 3 invoices which should have been coming monthly, this way I wouldn’t see he was draining my account. I had no communications, no emails regarding correspondence from opposing counsel or the court system. Emails I sent were never followed up, phone calls very slow or not returned at all. A refundable retainer? It’s just bait. Once you pay he just made $1500. He stole my money and won’t reply to my request for it back. Super Lawyer? Rising Star? they expect firms to pay for their press, so I was fooled. I fired him and got another attorney who immediately performed discovery and set mediation. I began receiving communications from opposing counsel and the courts within days, what a difference! My new lawyer also witnessed firsthand how Paul C. Fessler lacks professionalism ethics when he didn’t respond for almost 2 weeks after being called and emailed several times, so it’s not just me. I believe I would have lost everything staying Paul C. Fessler. Since mediation wasn’t performed, I was unknowingly being placed into a position where I was just one day away from heading to court to have the judge divide everything in half. The courts don’t have time to mediate cases, this is why mediation so important to work things out before that Settlement date or final judgement day, and discovery is part of that. So, looks like he took my money to let the judge do the work. Paul is the type that gives lawyers a bad name. In hindsight, I should've found a lawyer with hundreds of reviews, not like Paul C. Fessler’s 5 or 6 reviews.

Would Love to share my experience with David and NachtLaw, P.C. I employed David/Nacht Law to work my case for almost a year. From day one, I felt like I was given the utmost attention with my case and concerns. I was always given more than adequate time to discuss anything I needed to with David. If he wasn't available, I was always given a return call from him in a prompt manner. During our discussions, he provided insight and great perspective on the avenues that would best get me to the outcome I was looking for. David provided exceptional judgment by guiding me to trust his process by steering me from not making decisions based on emotions, but by making decisions that would best benefit me and my case. David always came to the table prepared. He always had research ready to show/explain to me. I always had a great understanding during our meetings and felt extremely confident in our plan of action. David had all aspects of my case analytically broken down and ready to explain. His creativity and ability to think outside the box made my case go as planned. With all that said, David and his law firm went above and beyond for me. David is an exceptional lawyer. I am more than pleased I employed him and his firm.

I spoke to Ms. Martell the other day. I had previously reached out to her a day or so before. She return my call personally and was very kind. Ms. Martell provided my fiancée and I with very valuable and easy to understand legal advice with regard to LGBTQ parenting laws. We will definitely be using her for any of our estate planning and family needs. Please note: I was a bit thrown off by the rating, But as I always, do, I read the reviews carefully. The low ratings are not a reflection of this business. Sometime ago, a scammer used the name of this business. This is similar to how a catfish steals someone’s photo off social media to scam others. This law firm is not connected with the credit card scammers in ANY way. The owner of the business is just as much as a victim as anyone else that was affected by the criminals involved.

They're the victims, not you and your drained bank account. I got them on the phone and that was the story. It's their company and their name. The fact that they haven't addressed it speaks volumes. They are absolutely part of the scam. File a police report with your local PD They will contact Ann Arbor PD.

Tom Blaske is the biggest liar, cheat and thief. DO NOT USE this attorney. He is nasty, condescending and outlandishly offensive. Kent was my attorney for a simple divorce. He charged me almost $20,000 AND we lost at trial, due to his ineptness. I appealed the Judge's decision and won in the Court of Appeals and MI Supreme Court -- which is very difficult in Domestic Relations law. Please -- there are many other divorce attorneys in Ann Arbor that will serve you better.

I am a mom of two very outgoing and cheerful kids. In my recent divorce, Kent helped me to move forward very directly, quickly, professionally, and amicably with my ex-spouse, while looking out for the very best interests of our kids. He listened to the questions I had, helped me to find a focus on what I wanted out of the situation, and proceeded to help by being quick to respond to both my and my ex-spouse's attorney. In all, I would recommend Kent so very highly, and am glad to have found such a capable, friendly, and affordable attorney that helped me feel extremely satisfied with the outcome of my divorce and settlement.

Steer clear from Steven Reed. For me, he was a 40,000 dollar mistake! 10 years after my divorce I'm still dealing with the results of his carelessness. Stay away. He is a nice guy, looks very professional, and all the way through the judgement, I thought I had a 5 star attorney. I didn't know better, since I had never gone through a divorce. Retrospectively I know now that Steven should not have agreed to leave alimony and child support bonuses out of the standard Michigan formula (which the opposing attorney proposed), and that Steven should have reviewed properly the documents drafted by the opposing attorney. He did not, and left tons of loose ends, as basic as not defining exactly what "income" should be defined (is it gross, net, box 1 of W2, etc.) especially if the payments are a formula over "income". So 5 years after the divorce my ex came back with her attorney to file a motion for more money, claiming "income" is "gross income" and and although I hire this time attorneys that were not clowns, they had their hands tied because of all the holes Steve left on the document that was already signed and agreed upon. Do not use this attorney.

I would steer clear. If nothing else I found this guy to be perhaps in a state of cognitive decline. He is much older, forgot to file my papers, forgot to read my settlement, and generally was forgetful of what I had asked him to do. I have spent 3 months with a new attorney just cleaning up.

Naomi Woloshin was a pleasure to work with. She handled an uncontested but financially complex divorce for me. During the consultation I described the type of legal support I wanted, and this is exactly what she delivered. She guided me through the process and was always available when I had questions. The case was completed on time and without complication. She set a very reasonable retainer for the case, and then completed the work with $$ to spare! The support staff in her office is also very helpful. I enthusiastically recommend Naomi Woloshin.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
