Initial intake they said you only talk to a lawyer if you have a case. I requested the lowest option for a consultation and waited. They called back saying a lawyer wanted to speak to me which meant to me we had a case. Instead of the lowest price tier lawyer only the highest was available. Around about the 50 minute mark lawyer tells me we have no case, and that he just needed information. I feel swindled. Why not just ask for more information before the meeting with the lawyer?

Smithey Law Group - specifically Reuben Wolfson Esq. - represented me in my EEOC case that was successfully mediated and settled. I could have not chosen a better attorney to work with. Reuben is very professional, competent, a great communicator, kind, and understanding. He made me feel heard and understood. He was also great at helping me make the best possible decisions during negotiations of the settlement. I am forever grateful for the outstanding representation! I would've gone nuts if I did not have Reuben, and Veronica (his legal assistant/paralegal) on my my team! For anybody dealing with an employment law issue I highly recommend their services.

Drafting this review is an absolute pleasure, given that my experience with this law firm is truly exceptional. Having collaborated with numerous attorneys throughout my career, I can confidently affirm that this firm stands head and shoulders above the rest. The professionalism, attentiveness, and communication exhibited by the team are truly outstanding. My primary interactions are with Alexander Berman, and I must express profound gratitude for his unparalleled level of care, service, and communication. A referral led me to him, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate for the recommendation. Alexander epitomizes exceptional service. Despite residing out of state and never having met him in person, I trust him with anything at this point! For those in search of a top-notch attorney, especially one who goes above and beyond, Alexander should undoubtedly be your choice. It's challenging to find adequate words to encapsulate the remarkable job he does. Working with a reliable attorney can be a rarity, but with Alexander, there is never a need to reach out for updates – he is always on top of everything. A truly remarkable professional.

TLDR; They got the job done, but that was about the extent of what they did. Only person I met in person was the secretary to pickup my check. I got recommended through family connections to Hyatt and Weber, and got my MCC personal injury case assigned to a partner at the firm. Im unsure if my experience is due solely to this specific partner and their assistant or as if this represents the firm as a whole. My experience started with a zoom call, when I was only about 2 weeks out of the hospital, during this zoom there was seemingly quite little concern for how I was doing and how I was feeling, didn’t feel very human, I was quickly told what to do and what not to do and what to send them, this zoom if I had to guess took all of 10-15 minutes. After this, I didn’t hear from them to my memory, at all until I asked about some medical bills I’d been sent, they quickly sent the hospital a “please wait” letter, then after that essentially nothing. They didn’t reach out to me at all until the other party’s insurance accepted to settle. Over a month with no status updates, being completely in the dark about anything was happening in the background, nothing, until I get an email telling me to sign a release of liability form. I then had a few more phone calls and email exchanges and then picked up my check, having never met the partner assigned to my case on their assistant, only momentarily walking in to ask the secretary for my check. Overall they did their job and got the other party to settle for policy limits in an admittedly (in my opinion, with no actual knowledge of what they did because I didn’t hear from them at all) cut and dry case of right of way. Now to the question of, do I feel like I got a service worth $33,484.55? No, at no point did I feel cared about, did I feel like I knew what was going on behind the scenes, at no point did I get to meet my attorney in person or their assistant, let alone any staff at the firm aside from the secretary momentarily to pick up my check. Once again, I will add, I’m completely unsure if this was just my experience with the specific partner I was assigned or if this can represent the whole firm, I would argue to say it was just the partner as I have heard good things about the firm before, and I even got recommended to them and told an attorney friend of mine who I was being represented by and they said I was in good hands. But did I feel I got any sort of outstanding A+ service? No. It was in a matter of words, utilitarian. They got the job done, and that was it. If you’re looking for a firm that simply gets stuff done, I’d say they can do it, but if you’re coming out of a personal injury event, especially one as physically and mentally traumatic as a motorcycle accident, I can’t say from my experience that I’d recommend them.

I made an appointment with this firm by telephone. The day of my appointment the lawyer called me and was extremely confrontational and rude. Apparently there was a miscommunication with his secretary about our appointment, and instead of calling in a calm manner to discuss the issue he called and yelled and told me he was not able to help us as his time was billed at $375 an hour and we were wasting his time by not calling his secretary back or saying why we were coming in. All this had already happened, and I was completely taken aback. Maybe time for a secretary and lawyer to have a communications class!. I would not recommend this firm, as a business owner myself, the worst customer service ever received and not a way to start a relationship with prospective clients. Quite happy I learned this so early on as I prefer people with a positive and professional outlook.

Evans Law helped guide me through a difficult issue with a tenant. This was my first experience using a private lawyer, but they took their time to explain the process every step of the way. The office was easy to contact initially & with follow up communication. Pricing was fair. Mr. Evans' assessment of the problem was pragmatic & realistic. There was no pressure from them at any point. Great practice all around!

This is the most incompetent law firm I have ever encountered. There negligence and incompetence on a very simple real estate transaction was beyond belief. They made careless and negligent mistakes that were pointed out to them initially, do not pay attention to any detail and do not follow through on correcting the mistakes they make. They tought themselves as experts in agricultural property and this is so far from the truth. I wish I had never hired them and I would never recommend their services to anyone, unless you want your job done wrong.

Mr. Duvall made a real estate transaction possible when everyone else gave up. He makes it happen! The attorney at closing said, and I quote, "Thank god for Mr.Duvall "!. The deal went through and we sold the property. He has handled many cases for me and my family. All types of cases. I would give him 10 stars but it don't go that high. His staff works very hard to get your case ready. Very friendly and understanding.

Unfortunately, I had a horrible experience with Shannon Hayden an associate of this firm, that I will NEVER forget. This attorney was given the opportunity to represent my fathers probated estate in litigation where an unknown heir returned 18 years after his death, notice to unknown heirs, creditors and notice of appointment. During the pre-trial conference Shannon insisted that she contact the opposing party to log into zoom as the Judge grew impatient with their extreme tardiness. (Although she was told by one of the defendants that their intentions was not to show up). The mediator Judge was minutes away from making a decision/ruling. However, Shannon called the defendants and warned them of their time and assisted the defendants to login to the conference. In addition to explaining to the Judge a law pertaining to my case when an "unknown heir" isn't found during the probate process of an Estate. I informed Shannon, of my unhappiness with her representation and received a phone call at 1am leading into the next morning. (I didn't answer) I was then informed the following Monday, the need to withdraw as my counsel and I agreed. During the Estate trial litigation, Shannon request to withdraw from the case and went into a breakout room with a different Judge presiding over the case for at least 15 minutes. (unknown conversation) The trial ended in an unfavorable ruling and my father's estate was fumbled, the appeal was denied and now in the hands of a complete stranger. From my understanding a lawyer is to provide competent representation to their client and provide skillful representation to their CLIENT. Unfortunately, this did not occur. My new counsel tried calling Shannon several times for information on the case. Nonetheless, phone calls were ignored and never returned but Shannon has managed to stay updated with my case (although she withdrew from the case) to the point she emailed me a copy of the "Denied Appeal and Motion", obviously knowing the courts indeed sent a true copy to the home of the appellant. In my opinion to taunt me with the fact that I lost my fathers estate.

Bill ferris saved me. I was 21 and got an aggravated DWI when I went out celebrating that I was going to join the marines and I was to sign my release forms the following morning before my arrest. When I was released by the judge I was heartbroken and horrified as to how my future would turn out. The military didn't want me after everything was said and done but bill kept me from doing 1-3 and a felony conviction to 3 years probation with a misdemeanor. I was 21 years old and made a mistake. If it wasn't for bill I would be 31 now and an every day criminal because of that mistake. If I went to prison and came out a felon, no one would hire me. Bill kept that from happening even though I said I'd rather just go to jail for a year than walk on eggshells for 3 he told me to hold out and keep fighting because the quick way isn't the way you want to take. He is a good man, a good lawyer and is sincere. I haven't spoken to him since my conviction but I would recommend him to anyone. Thank you bill ferris

We needed a lawyer to represent my wife in order to extend a peace order against a person living near us. We were given Mr. Ferris as a recommendation so we decided to use his service. We were completely dissatisfied with his lack of ability to not only get our names right in the court room, getting the date wrong by 10 years, and not fully representing my wife who was the plaintiff by performing a terrible job preparing. We left the courtroom wondering if he was senile considering how bad he did his job to help us, with expectation he would be compensated for his services. I highly encourage anyone considering his services to look elsewhere. There are many to choose from who have more fire and determination to do well than this old man who it appears to hold on to past experience and length of time as a lawyer to prove his adequacy or relevance in life. His license needs to be revoked!

I was injured at work and initially contacted another law firm. Without mentioning names, I had a horrid experience. I couldn't get in contact with my lawyer. They didn't follow through on anything from their end which meant paperwork was never submitted; but after almost a year of a bad experience, my case was transferred here. I had never dealt with workers comp, or lawyers before in general, so I didn't know that the previous experience was bad until I started working with Kenneth Macleay and his team. They were so on top of everything, including cleaning up the mess left from the last firm. They took the time to contact me, make sure I understood everything that was going on, next steps, and timelines. I felt supported 100% of the way. A huge shoutout to the gentlemen at the front desk who always picked up the phone with such a welcoming attitude (my apologies I'm so bad with names), Kimberly, Bill, Lorie, and everyone else on Mr. Macleay's team. You all made this experience great for me. Thank you for treating me like part of the family when I know you have so many other clients. I never felt like just a number which is hard to find these days.

I found everyone at Johnson's Law to be competent, friendly, well organized, honest, forthcoming and fair-prices. I highly recommend them. Plus, plenty of free parking, which is a big deal in Annapolis!

Jim has a very good understanding of the MD family law and provided solid legal advice. However, he displayed a bit of condescending tone at times and Jim and his associate, Thomas DeGennaro made a few billing mistakes. They included duplicate charges so please pay attention to the details of the invoice before submitting payments. When I questioned the bill, they admitted their mistakes and resolved the billing, but they charged me for the time Jim and Thomas reviewed the bill and adjusted the invoice. Thus, at the end, I was charged for the same amount as they initially charged me with duplicate charges. Jim' explained to me that his time is billed regardless of the activity even if that is to fix his mistakes. Lastly, I asked them to please check with me before moving forward with the next step or doing the research, but despite my request, Jim/Thomas carried on with the research. The general theme was because they know what they are doing, they expected me not to have a say. I ended up firing them. They are both good lawyers but they lack client centric mindset. They may treat their high-paying clients more favorably, but even smaller clients can turn into great referral source in the future.

Very poorly represented by Joel Katz for a Workmen's Comp case. Seemed to have a revolving door for lawyers handling injury cases. My file was buried in a drawer for a year or so until a consultant to the firm found it. They only want cases that are easy and a shoe in. I was exposed to chemicals on the job. From day one I got nothing but negative feedback about my case. They wanted me to settle for almost nothing. If a firm doesn't know any medical experts for your particular injury you know you will not be properly represented. I was too sick from being sensitized to chemicals to fight them. Didn't settle and the case is still hanging. I have a new lawyer who has worked very hard to get my case heard. Workmen's Comp doesn't seem do their job any better than Joel Katz. My case was somehow dropped from their files when they switched to computers. How many requests does it take to get my case back in the data base? Very disappointed and poorly served by both the lawyer and Worker's Comp.

What man would openly admit to touching a child? None. What child would openly admit to a man touching them? None. So when a five-year old, child admits to it, we as adults should listen! What a pathetic attorney, adult and overall human being! We as a whole are here to advocate for our children because they have no one else. She doesn’t and will never have your child’s best interest at heart. She will most likely put them in harms way! I definitely wouldn’t recommend Susan as an attorney!

I knew Susan since I was a kid. She helped my dad and then helped me with a custody case. She was fantastic until I needed to make adjustments. I don’t know what happened to her. It’s like she gave up. After I had paid her she went silent for months making up excuses that it was everyones fault but hers. It’s almost always the courts clerks fault. For some reason, the adjustments needed to be 2 separate court hearings, meaning more money and time. Anytime I asked questions or explanations, she was really good at making me feel dumb and called me a naïve child most of the time. She also refused to give me an invoice. I emailed and called but she almost always ignored or came up with excuses. Her dog ate it I guess. Anyway, I am still left with issues within my agreement and I still don’t have my invoice, years later, due to her negligence. I don’t know what happened to her.

If you need someone to donate money to here's your person. You can hire her and give her money and when she quits the day before the court date she will keep your money. Really good if you want to lose your case and money. She's a crook and Carl Tenner is a joke.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
