For the better part of nine months, David Frank and his firm represented us in a lawsuit over a real estate dispute that became very contentious. Having no prior experience with legal issues - despite numerous real estate transactions - we were truly lucky to have engaged David to represent us. He and his staff kept us fully apprised throughout and worked diligently to expedite the process. David exemplified professionalism yet recognized the benefits of levity. Many thanks to the Frank Law Group for their efforts on our behalf!

I am so thankful that I hired Zachary Merliss from Cohen Defense group. He was amazing. He handled my case with care and complete skill. He was always available if I had a question. Zachary was proficient in dealing with several different assistant DA's. He was knowledgeable about the law and what Law Enforcement tries to get away with. I am so grateful for his carefully thought out plan of defense, four different events and Zachary was spot on every time, with a plan of action. I cant thank him enough. Five stars Lynn G

Dan fights hard for his clients and treats them as he would want to be treated. I relied on him and trusted him completely on every aspect of our case for legal advice. He is a fantastic resource and was always available for us in a moments notice. Having someone like Dan who has the knowledge and experience to navigate through the legal system was been invaluable to us and we will refer him to anyone that is in need. Thank you Dan for all of your hard work. You have been gifted with an ability to treat people respect and dignity… you are extraordinary.

I hired mr koukol at the last minute one day before my preliminary hearing after the judge had said absolutely no more continuing and he took the case also only making me pay half up front and a very reasonable rate and got it continued and I only had to go a few more times and it was dismissed. I didn't even have to goto my final hearing and if I wouldn't have hired him I believe k may have been convicted of something I didn't do. he was very supportive and has connections to the right people clearly. He's an excellent lawyer and a very nice person

Chandra is an outstanding attorney and deserves nothing less than 5 stars. She represented me in 2013 and 2014 through a divorce and her advice, counsel and guidance saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars. You may notice that almost all of her negative reviews are not from clients. She is outstanding in family law and will always be the one I recommend to my friends and family.

UPDATE 7/17/2020: I received correspondence from this office regarding my google review. Be aware that reviews you write could potentially bring you undesirable results! I would not recommend Chandra for any Family Law proceedings. At times she was condescending of me and she did little to nothing to resolve my case. She consistently had an excuse as to why she could not appear and she did not perform due diligence in researching the avenues available to represent me in court regarding the laws which were clearly being broken and the contempt being committed by the other party of my case. I wasted all of my savings on her to end up in a worse position than when I started. She is inept in understanding and navigating domestic abuse and manipulation of the court system by abusers in custody cases and is unable to perform at a level which is expected of her in regards to dealing with narcissistic personality disorder and post-separation abuse, which she touts being exceptionally knowledgeable about. I am extremely dissatisfied with her services. I also reached out to her office to request an itemized receipt of all my expenses over the course of the time she “served” me, yet never received that information, only excuses and promises of a call back which was never received. Find another attorney, especially if your impetus for seeking an attorney is the well being of your children in family law disputes or custody proceedings.

Opposing counsel and all future and past clients take notice. Ms. Miller uses gaslighting and frequently launches personal attacks, fabrications, and makes disparaging comments about the targeted spouse/parent that she knows are NOT true. She is “unprofessional” and “unethical.” I know divorce is not easy, but working together with your partner is really going to save you a lot of money and help you reach a common goal. I wish I knew that then! Sadly, Ms. Miller is incapable of helping anyone achieve a common goal. She antagonizes and upsets the other party while trying to convince you she is compassionate and on your side only to rack up your legal fees by encouraging the court to schedule court date after court date...in hindsight I realize that now. All the while you are paying her to prepare and appear in court on your behalf. She preyed on me while I was trying to work through a difficult time in my life. For that, I would never recommend her!

We hired Thomas McDonnell after my husband and 96 year old aunt were involved in a auto accident. My husband was driving and was not at fault. We both had medical insurance coverage through our employment, and auto insurance. Our aunt unfortunately passed away from her injuries. Later, our medical insurance company wanted to be reimbursed thousands of dollars for the medical payments. Tom helped us through this devastating situation and we settled with a great outcome. We could handle most everything through emails with Tom which was wonderful since we live 2 hours away. Highly recommend Thomas McDonnell.

Kevin was referred to us by friends there in Auburn. (We live in L.A.) It was our good luck. We believe the family (estate plan )he put together for us is the best work we could have gotten from anywhere. The above and beyond part has to do with dealing with the L.A. recorders office. He practically had to educate the people there how to do it correctly. He is honest and articulate. He and his wife Mary make a great team. They are always up to date on the latest changes in the laws. Going to them is the smartest thing we could have done, and absolutely the smartest money we've ever spent.

We retained Kevin's service to help us with a trust issue after our fathers death. He is very knowledgeable, very available when we call, does not over charge, actually undercharges time spent, and helped us get our fathers estate settled when a co-executor would not honor the trust. We highly recommend him, he is great and we will continue to use him when needed. He cares about his clients and will only accept clients that don't want to hurt other people in court.

Before I hired Martin as my attorney, my previous lawyer would not return calls, respond to legal forms, help find a doctor, make sure my temporary disability checks continued, etc. When I met Martin, I was desperate for help. I was lost and had no where to turn. Martin was kind, compassionate, knowledgeable, and most of all understanding. He took control of my case and got results immediately. I felt protected and well represented. He responded to any questions or concerns within 24 hours even on weekends. He made sure I had QME and AMEs with respected doctors. He would take action if he was not getting the results from the workers' compensation company. He would not hesitate to file a claim in court if he thought it was appropriate and necessary. When it came time to settle my case, he gave me sound advice and told me to hold out for more money. Even though I was tempted to settle immediately because of financial hardship, I followed his advice and now live as well as I did before my injury. I will recommend Martin to any person who needs a workers' compensation attorney, even if they must drive far for him. I will always be thankful to Martin and his staff for all they have done for me at time when I thought I had no hope. Thank you forever, Martin. Marcie.

Tom Brown did a great job for me as well as my Mother as we both were injured at work within months of one another. The only thing that I regret is not having Tom, me persistently pursuing, the additional sum of money that I was eligible to fight for through the disability process. This sum would have brought me well over the minimal $10k per year that I have struggled to live on since January of 2000. Luckily my Mother saw me go through the "hell" first and I didn't let her miss out on ANY of it...she did get that extra monthly supplemental that comes 2-3 times per month until she's no longer breathing. It's interesting that while you're going through this process it all seems so very confusing, it still is for me, and really who wants to know how to go through it anyway until you have to....and then it's only one time because you're obviously not going to get bad hurt again; or are you? Anyhow Tom's a good guy through and through no doubt in my mind and he did right by us.

I had him for a case a few years back and the way he handles cases and deals with the opposing side is very sketchy. i was scared the whole time that the opposing side would point out his illegal wrongdoings and I would lose my case (however that did not have an attorney and seemed bullied by him). As much as I love an aggressive lawyer, he is not trustworthy. He should not be able to practice law, he is not an honest lawyer.

I was referred to Ed Koons and consulted him regarding a matter of property. He never once mentioned price of the consult in any emails or via phone conversations. However he did say I have a case and he did mention a set price roughly $1300 to move forward with my case. I told him I would be deploying out of country and would have to wait until I got back. While deployed I received numerous bills of $225 for the consult (which he never once mentioned before). I called his office in attempts to have that fee removed and proceed with the case which would cost roughly $1300. However his office was determined that I owed $225 for the consult and the bill would stand, telling me it was a “verbal contract” (I did not know there were such things as verbal contracts in the matters of law) May I say again, *There was never any mention of a consult fee at all!* Sorry Mr. Koons but you just lost $1300 because you wanted $200. ***Any one consulting this office, get all the charges in writing, or you may end up getting unexpected bills from this Firm***

Absolutely would not recommend John. He never returned telephone calls nor emails even when my child was in a crisis situation. He wrongly told me we had to go to court in Tahoe when we could and I would have preferred court in Roseville. He wrongly told me I could dismiss the court appointed therapist and it is public record. After the therapist saw that, he wrote a scathing court recommendation for my kid and retaliated that nearly cost me custody of my daughter. I have spent nearly $30,000 trying to get my daughter back and John blamed it on me. He is expensive, and lies. Do Not Use!!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
