Mr. Dunn has assisted me and my family since 2011 and has been wonderful! So many lawyers think they know the law because they went to law school...at one point. He really does, and it's current law! He teaches Law classes at Delta College so he has to stay up to date with the law. He is working on an appeal to the Supreme Court for us right now and I am confident that he will do the best job possible! He may have a strong and assertive personality but isn't that exactly what you want when someone is fighting for you? I know I do!

Totally unprofessional, slow at getting things done, yelled at me when I didn’t have a mask and falsely accused me of entering his office when I dropped stuff off with the Bock and Wallen Secretary as there is not an inbox for him. Judges don’t like him either. Dude even parks in handicapped parking and he isn’t handicapped.

He took money from a disabled woman who was trying to protect her daughter from her abuser, and sold out this little girl for- how much did you get from them exactly, Mr. Gorte?! How much did they give you to just leave town and abandon us completely?! How much to have her go back and then to have the abuse escalate to a whole new level?! Was it worth it?!?! You literally make me sick.

Kim represent me on me in a custody hearing for my kids in Midland, my ex lawyer states why don't I not drink alcohol with the kids because I am a drunk. I am a casual drinker, in Midland all dads are drunk. I discuss with Kim together and he tells me it would be good for me to do this and I agreed to not drink alcohol with the kids, at the time I did not know that if I got a positive alcohol test while with the kids that I would lose parenting time with my kids down to every other weekend. My ex had a better lawyer and knew if I had a positive test I would lose parenting time. I switched lawyer and tried getting my kids back, but am only seeing my kids to every other weekend. He does not care if he loses his cases. Avoid Kim, he is a the worst lawyer and risk time with your kids, he is clueless!!

I was recently represented by Mr. Bierlein on an original charge of OUIL 2nd offense. This charge could possibly have left me unable to continue schooling to become a Registered Nurse. Not only am very pleased with the outcome, but more importantly I am impressed with Mr. Bierleins professionalism and the compassion he showed towards my case. He treated me like family and fought to get me an outcome that seemed almost impossible to attain. My family is forever grateful and I truly recommend him to anyone in need of an exceptional lawyer.

To whom it may concern, re: J. Joseph Purtell. I just want to say how pleased our family has been with J. Joseph Purtell. He has assisted our family for over 30 years, on many different issues. Recently, I had an issue to be resolved, and Mr. Purtell had it resolved in just minutes. Our family can’t thank him enough for his services, expertise, and the respectful way he treated us. Thank you, Peggy M.

Roy Kranz is just simply an awesome Lawyer. With my case, he got the information he needed, befriended my parents and I, and got the job done. He was friendly and active on our case, and was kind to us in many ways, then went into the court room with teeth barred. He got the case, and he did it fantastically well. He's a very good Lawyer, and overall, is a very good person. :) Highly recommended.

Mr Higgs was consulted for my child support case that my ex was trying to increase astronomically due to outrageous childcare prices. Mr Higgs basically told me that I could not fight it and that child support is what it is, although I would have no money leftover for bills while working OT and going to college full-time. After the consultation, I went to court with no lawyer and the judge looked at all the facts and determined that it was much too high and did in fact lower the monthly payment. Mr Higgs could have helped me out, but stated there was nothing that could be done. He does not seem too experienced or confident in this area and I would not recommend him for a consultation.

Kim is my court appointed attorney. He has lied to me numerous times. He lied to the court on two occasions. (I have proof). Kim refuses to communicate in any meaningful way. Meaning, he acts as if hes listening but sets his phone down and ignores and plays ignorant. Ive tried everything to get him to discuss my case proactively....i even sent him a funny thank u card with kittens on it to sway him to a HUMAN degree to no avail. Ur in trouble if hes ur attorney. Period.

Attempted to use Mr. Learman as an attorney to get together a family business Buy-Sell agreement, merger on 2 companies, and also some smaller items to get this all done. Correspondence was extremely slow, taking nearly a full year to get these 2 major points close to done. We then received a bill for over $250 per hour for about 20 hours of work completed. I thought this was a bit high for what was completed, but agreed to pay it if we would receive documents showing the work was completed. With 3 requests on our part asking for proof of what he claims was completed, as in forms and documents completed, the only thing we got was A SUMMONS FROM A LOCAL OFFICER saying we were being sued by Mr. Learman!!!!! His lack of communication and now he treats us like a criminal instead of a client. Horrible Horrible Horrible to treat clients like a criminal. Apparently likes to be the reason for many of the lawyer jokes many of us have heard over the years!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
