If you do not want to be contacted (unless for money) or updated on your case even after leaving messages or Enjoy never getting any clear answers kr explanations... then this may be your guy. His disregaurd to my husbands future and lack of communication became apparent when he (finally)made it to court, and didn't even recognize him much less the crucial, erroneous ppwk/info that they were trying to charge him based off. If my husband hadn't asked why the deal they were offering was much different than what he initially told us would be most probable AND that it wasn't even his info, 'Mr. Wilkerson ' wouldn't have noticed and my husband would be in jail...Additionally, being in the court halls, waiting to be seen, on several occasions, I had observed how other lawyers, inparticularly Mr.Gertz who had 5times the clients each time, would still manage to show interest and effort in every one of his clients cases..explain, advise and most importantly communicate with them. Far more different than our experience or lack there of..Update: upon writing this review I was finally, actually contacted by Mr.Wilkerson unfortunately it was not due to the case,( for which had a court date in just days) or to return my calls/msgs about case and court, but instead only to respond to this review.

Our title company told us about this law firm when we needed to have the deed re-written so we called and spoke with Vicky. We mentioned that the title company said it would be $80 and Vicky told us it would take about one week. After calling several times during the next few weeks (and having Vicky fail to return my calls), we finally went to pick it up 3 weeks later. However, Vicky only then told us that it would be $100 and that they required cash or check. Getting to our bank off of Calder was impossible before the law firm closed and so we had to wait until the next week! We then asked her about filing it and she told us we needed to take it to the court house. Two hours after going to the court house and realizing we needed more cash and going through the same ordeal of going to our bank, we called Vicky and realized that she neglected to tell us that she could have filed it for us for the same price the court house charged... You should go somewhere else!

Recently engaged in a legal matter involving Mr. Friesz. Many time, he or his office produced documents that were amateurish and lacking the precision one might expect from any competent lawyer. Examples include not changing critical names, addresses and counties on the document or failing to ensure documents were properly notarized.

I filled for divorce while pregnant in 2020. I was educated that nothing could be done until after the baby’s birth in July 2020. Here I am in 2022 and still have no divorce degree. I’ve been kept in the dark about what’s going on. Even though my ex husband almost killed me with a hammer. When I called and asked why I can’t get a divorce decree I was told my ex husband filled an answer in January 2022. The secretary was supposed to call me back but I never received a call back but I received a bill for over $2000 dollars, this is besides the $3000 I’ve already paid. I still don’t know what the heck is going on. Im not saying he’s a bad lawyer but if he thinks your case is unimportant based on his assumption….you will never here from this guy. Guess is priority is whites only … idk

When I called to get a consultation he noticed my phone number was from outside the country and was rude right away. He asked what the charge was and soon as I answered, he hung up on me. I'm trying to get an attorney for a family member's case, who is in Jefferson County, but I guess since my phone number is foreign, I don't get to receive basic, decent assistance.

My experience was eerily similar as previous reviewer. She also called me from 25 feet away and walked off. I was left to find my way through a maze. She didn't shake my hand nor introduce herself. Sound Professional? This lady has no social skills. She couldn't tell me if i qualify, nor if so which chapter until i hired her. All she wanted to do was tell me how much her services costs. I thanked her and left. I went to another lawyer in Nederland. They are very Helpful to say the least.

I did not hire her! I went for my inital consultation and ended up walking out. She was very rude, rolling her eyes at my responses. Took her 15 minutes to come to the lobby to get me, when she did she called my name from about 25 feet away and started walking to her office, leaving me following behind. Seems her hot chocolate was more important to her and worth her time than I was! Very dissapointed in the lack of customer service!

Mr. Clarkson on repeated occasions failed to answer our calls, for questions about our case. He did not do anything to stop the repeated violations of the court order by the opposing party in our custody case. Mr. Clarkson failed to inforce the court ordered visitation, either through contacting the opposing party, or contacting the court. Mr. Clarkson has not got us into court but 1 time in the past year and 2 months that we have been going through this custody case.

Jessica was an ad-litem attorney, selected by the court, to represent my daughter in an auto accident case. I had no contact with her until the final few months of the case. She was VERY unprofessional, borderline abusive. During the court hearing (Zoom-based because of COVID), the judge questioned my attorney’s (David Starnes) fee percentage of 35%, stating that the state approved fee maximum is 33.5%. This was a surprise to me, David stated, when I met with him originally, that his fee was less than ‘most’ attorneys. Jessica thought it was her place to speak up during the court proceeding, informing the judge that she believed David deserved the full 35% fee. The attorney, selected by the court, to fight for my daughters’ rights and she speaks up to support money being taken from my daughter and given to the attorney. I originally agreed to the 35% fee on behalf of my daughter. I didn’t try to back out of that arrangement because of what the judge stated, but I didn’t expect Jessica to advocate for my attorney. I expected she would advocate for my daughter. She was being paid to do so, and I thought she was legally obligated to do so. As if that was not enough, in a final phone conversation with her after the court proceeding, I was asking her for specific information regarding my daughters’ settlement and copies of financial documents that I needed and should be entitled to, when Jessica started yelling at me on the phone, telling me that my attorney deserved the 35% and more for having to deal with me. I don’t believe that was professional. There are other things that were off about her work, but I will keep with what I have stated here.

Met with the attorney regarding a release of lien. He took over three weeks to do absolutely nothing. He claimed in the end that "he couldnt find to whom the affidavit should be addressed" and closed the file. And although I had given him all my contact information, he mailed an invoice to a customer's house. He's completely disengaged to handle any of our real estate needs!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
