Susan, she was not my attorney. It was unfortunate that she was representing my opponent. First she was 25 minutes late getting to the hearing. Upon her arrival me and a family member was sitting in the hallway. Poorly dressed with high water blue jeans, ankle boots and fanny pack. I did not know she was my opponents attorney until she came out of the court room and started discussing my case with a man who was meeting with his client, made a phone call and discussed my case in front of us. Lunged at me and my family member when told her she was violating my PII and tried to intimidate us by letting us hear her call. I don't know why the judge allows attorney to treat there court room like a back yard and we pay with our hard earn money. After reading all these reviews, my opinion you can do better. If you are looking for a divorce lawyer who charges more than twice as much as a fairly straightforward divorce should cost, who provides poor to non-existent legal counsel, who is non-responsive to repeated questions/inquires (until you finally send an email indicating you are upset that you haven’t received a response), who repeats hearsay from your legal adversary back to you as if it were fact, and who takes months and months (and months!) to complete tasks that should take a few weeks - then this is the lawyer for you. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Ms Wilson did not fight for me at all in court. I had to secure her services via telephone because i reside in another state 900 miles away. I felt like she only worked on my case when I mentioned that I was coming to town. The day of court she was asking me did i have paperwork that i know i already submitted to her. Any information that I gave her relevant to my case she obviously did not utilize based on the judgement that was rendered. How is it that I have an arrearage in child support almost $10,000 when I have voluntarily paid ever since my child was conceived. I have paperwork to prove this too! After looking over my paperwork years later I found critical evidence that I provided to Ms Wilson but she did not present it which is ultimately the reason for the arrearage. What really got my goat was when she made a comment about me being angry over the judges decision. I quote,"I don't see what you are angry about, you got away with it for fifteen years...." referring to the amount of payment that the judge set years ago which I paid faithfully with no intentions of dodging the court system. Whose side is she on is what I asked in between all of the expletives she managed to pull out of me. Also, I drove the 900 plus mile trip to only just stand in the hallway of the courthouse and not even have a chance to talk with the judge to present my side of the story and try to remove the deadbeat dad stigma that was already upon me just because my situation has ended up in court. To be fair to her, she did tell me that I could talk to the judge, of course when it was absolutely irrelevant to the judge because he had already rendered his decision. If that was the order of business then why did I need Ms Wilson to represent me? Initially $2,000 was paid upfront and she said that she would let me know when more money was needed, well needless to say all I got was worthless repetative correspondance and an additional $800 bill when this fiasco ended. Thanks for nothing except for feeding me to the wolves with pork chop drawers on. Stay away if you know what is good for you!!!

First, he didn’t file a response until AFTER our first court—-which was canceled last minute due to covid. When I asked why—-he said he just couldn’t find time—-he had over 3 months! He showed up to court completely unprepared. He had several facts wrong. He failed to mention things we covered in our meeting. The judge and opposing attorney chastised him for failing to properly file his appearance and use an incorrect email. It was embarrassing to be represented by him.

NEVER HIRE THIS FIRM!!! I hired Katherine Ruocco to assist in my father's estate probate, which was one of the simplest cases. She never provided an accounting of charges, never advised me of the three court hearings in which she failed to appear in court which is a violation of Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct. I had to hire another firm, spending thousands of dollars more, and they have to salvage the case which was almost dismissed by the judge.

Mr. Hutnick insists on communicating with other attorneys and the court system only through the U.S. Postal Service and by writing repeated and a multitude of letters, which clearly is time consuming and makes progress with a case a snail's pace. He focuses and hones in on the irrelevant instead of the main topic for so long that he will completely overcharge you and drag your case out for as long as he possibly can. He's outdated and your time, money and energy is best spent elsewhere.

This lawyer handled my case with complete incompetence. Robert was not returning emails or calls for 12 months, He is definitely a waste of an attorney, the only time he showed emotion was when I told him I was going to fire him. I took a deal..I wanted to go to Trial. Robert Jones then Bait & Switched my deal to something else.He said ill get 1 year no contact probation, from day #1..i said ok...When it came time to sign,it was 2 years!!!!! I have no criminal record.Bob didnt do anything anyway,my record got me off............Bob was on the side of IL.the whole time.. I should have fired him the first time.My uncle begged me to keep him,or i would have not still be in pain, from him 6 months, after the case is over....He also lied about getting my money back, from day #1,until 76 days after my 6/2017 court date...8/2017 he finally responded to a email, saying yes,hed get my money back, now the case is over!? In DEC.2017 i found out he never even filled out step #1.....Its really unbelievable the treatment this guy provides...And he went to grade school with my Uncle is how i unfortunately met this person......When i fired him the 1st time,my uncle begged me,to take him back....I wanted transparency also..Absolutely zero....There were 2 DAs..DA#2 was his personal friend also, from high school or college, and theres another problem..Im investigating into the DA too...Its Bobs personal friend... This entire process wasnt fair on my end because of Robert. From the Crooked state cop,to the crooked DA. To my Attorney Robert Jones..All against me.. Just a horrible experience from day #1,until now 18 months later,i still live the pain from his incompetence..And a family friend..Ridiculous!

There are hundreds of attorneys to choose from, do NOT choose Dave Berwin if you want a professional experience. The constant follow-up he required was absolutely ridiculous when that is what I hired him for, so I did not have to spend all of my time and effort constantly e-mailing and calling to see if things are getting done as promised. You will be left out of the loop and then yelled at when he forgets to do things and makes mistakes. He was extremely unprofessional, tardy, forgetful (which is bothersome when handling time sensitive information/documents), rude (when he was the one making mistakes), arrogant, so disorganized, so on and so fourth. Do you ever expect to hear your attorney say, "I forgot"? I could go on for an hour about my horrible experience with him, but hopefully this is enough so that no one else has to go through with what I went through with him. He definitely does not deliver - but does talk and talk and talk, and you will waste your time with his run-around b.s. and be more stressed than necessary. Attorneys are a dime a dozen today, do not get stuck with him, you will regret it.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
