Fortress surprised us…
The COVID pandemic, (which severely compromised my business) along with family illness and loved ones passing in both my and my wife’s families, caused us to get behind in paying our IRS taxes. My wife lost her brother due to complications from diabetes. I had just lost my father. We were overwhelmed and knew we needed help, but where to turn?
While my wife was away in China caring for her brother (before he passed), I received a certified letter/summons from the IRS mandating that I attend a hearing in CT in less than a week with all returns/paperwork completed, and with full payment of back taxes. I phoned IRS stating that there was no way I could make said order happen that quickly. The IRS wasn’t interested in my excuses. I couldn’t sleep.
I’d heard countless tax relief ads on talk radio over the past few years – some from hosts I trusted. Yet when I did my due diligence and reviewed those most frequently advertised, I found they didn’t rate well. There were many complaints from dissatisfied customers who ended up getting nickeled and dimed throughout the process.
Then on the Forbes Advisor I found Fortress Tax Relief with a five-star rating under “Best Tax Relief Companies Of December 2024.” I phoned Fortress and my mind was quickly put to rest as they listened patiently, and then outlined what they could provide for us. Furthermore, I was told I would not have to show up for the IRS hearing, that Fortress would act in my behalf.
We made only one payment to Fortress. I admit I was skeptical, but David Feldman and the team at Fortress came through for us in unimaginable ways, repeatedly and consistently. I had one call from the IRS right after contracting with Fortress. IRS was brutal, stating that I needed to “shut my mouth and listen” when I attempted to explain that I’d contracted with Fortress. I phoned Fortress and David ensured me that I would not have to take any further calls from IRS; subsequently IRS never phoned again. Not even once.
In short, Fortress protected us and isolated us from the IRS. David Feldman kept them from levying, which IRS repeatedly threatened via mail correspondence. Each time I received such correspondence I made PDF’s and sent them to Fortress. Fortress had already received same and ensured us the IRS would not levy. We were able to settle with David’s help and have finally put this behind us. Fortress provided a safety net which allowed us to go on with our lives w/out threats and pressure from the IRS – and we are most grateful. Fortress is very deserving of this FIVE-STAR review. They didn’t once let us down. We wrote and spoke several times. Our concerns were always responded to quickly. My wife and I recommend Fortress very highly. They did what they promised. They were personable and most responsible. In hindsight the price we paid was most fair considering the multiple times Fortress went to bat for us. Kudos to David Feldman and his team.

After a series of unexpected events, including the pandemic lockdown which was catastrophic to my industry worldwide and a subsequent 8-month! industry strike and general work slowdown, I found myself hopelessly behind in paying my IRS taxes. Of course, with that string of bad luck, naturally the IRS decided that now would be the best time to demand payment. Might as well kick me when I’m already down.
I had heard countless radio ads over the years for tax relief services, but now it seemed I needed help from someone who could help me as financial matters have never been my specialty. After some research, I came across information for FORTRESS TAX RELIEF, who I had never heard of before, yet the company was highly rated. It was a bit more expensive than the other options, and I was still struggling to just pay normal bills, but I decided that I needed the best to help me manage this spiraling situation.
After speaking with the owner about my circumstances, he handed me off to Mr. David Feldman and his assistant, Amber, who patiently listened to my story. They seemed to understand the difficulties that got me here and worked tirelessly to negotiate a payment plan that was more realistic than what the IRS initially was demanding. I still owe a lot of money and am still struggling with income, but without David and Amber’s help, the situation would be far far worse.
David went above and beyond as we ran into an unexpected snag with one of my payroll companies which erroneously withheld THOUSANDS of dollars that they shouldn’t have. David helped get to the bottom of their error in conjunction with the IRS agent and thankfully stopped the wrongly garnishments, money I really could have used all that time (and now!).
Both David and Amber have been so kind, helpful, and always available to answer any questions I have. Their calm demeanor has been truly welcome during a very stressful time. I really can’t recommend Fortress enough.

I could not be happier with the service. Provide what is needed in a timely manner and they will take care of the rest. My tax issue was huge. I paid the flat max fee that was beyond reasonable and they were able to work directly with the IRS and were able to have my penalties and interest removed. Roughly 200k. If it is possible they will do it. They really do care about their clients.

The entire time, he worked towards meeting my goals and needs, even when indignation wanted to prevent me from doing that for myself. Some relationships needed consideration, which ultimately was more important to me than winning. He knew this, and despite having the winning position, he always brought me back to what was most important to me. At first, I wondered if he had it in him to fight for my position, but when we had depositions, he was prepared, caught every nuance of conflicting information, and ultimately had the other party in tears. And he actually felt bad for that, but he knew he was only asking fair questions and appropriately representing me, so he didn't back off. Like I said, a rare breed. To the finish line, he maintained the balance of managing information and strategizing our approach so that, while we avoided litigation so there was no judgment in our favor, we were the winners in a thousand other ways. The most important ways. He is a quick thinker, creative problem solver, excellent negotiator, and is always keeping the big picture in mind.
Kyle could have latched onto my desire to fight and maximized the opportunity to make a LOT of money off of me. But he didn't. He cares about his clients and knows that when someone needs legal help, they are in a crisis, and he has no intention of taking advantage of that. It's like he took a class in the psychology of a litigant and understands that this kind of conflict does not bring out the best in anyone. He considers it part of his job to bring them back to being their best selves so that they get out of a place of just wanting to fight to fighting for what they really want.
I hope I never need an attorney again, but I highly recommend him to the rest of Central Oregon!

Both Kyle and his assistant have been difficult to reach, at best. I pay for advice which also appears to change depending on his whim of the day. I paid for advice A for what would happen should X come true. X came true, and his advice A changed to B contingent on Y happening. Y happened, and now his advice has changed to C.
I had already expressed my dissatisfaction about him being hard to reach, and last time he asked me for additional information based on responses from the other party. When I sent him the information, I still got no response. I feel like I"m constantly ghosted.
I'm not sure what I'm paying for, but it's clear I'm not getting my moneys worth. I've paid almost $2,000 for getting yanked around. I'd like my money back, but ... lawyers.

The problem with the legal system is no one can afford representation for issues. It is hard to litigate a $450 fee someone is trying to impose upon you when attorneys cost $400/hr just for a consultation. This doesn't help your community.
Edit after update from owner: This is all fine and in good spirit, but before I could even get a question off to see if this would be worth my time and expense, I was cut off and told I would have to set up a $400/hr consult first. For those of us in between jobs with families, this does not qualify as affordable. The state was more helpful. The state.

Christine is a very effective special education lawyer.
Our IEP journey was frustrating, to say the least. Our son’s education was floundering, and we were dealing with a school district that seemed unable to understand what he needed for support.
Our first lawyer finally got the school district to agree to an IEP for our son. This IEP, however, contained no meaningful support for him. Our second lawyer persuaded us to compromise to a revised IEP that had some structure but lacked substance. We will spare you the details, but the school district appeared willing to let our son’s education free fall.
Then, we found Christine. She told us what we needed to do and how we could convince the school district to provide much needed help for our son’s education. The IEP finally spelled out the support structure our son needed. He just graduated from a high school.
The only reason our son has a high school diploma is because of his IEP, which we would not have gotten without Christine.

I was referred to Christine by our family law attorney. I worked with her and her team for over a year and she was fantastic from beginning to end. She's very easy to talk to and explains things in ways that I understand. She returns messages promptly and responds thoroughly to my inquiries. She's very upbeat, honest and has been a pleasure to work with.
We unfortunately found ourselves having to go in front of a judge due to having received an objection to our filing. She and her team did a phenomenal job of making sure that I was prepared and feeling comfortable and confident; which wasn't difficult as I have great faith in these folks after having worked with them for months. I recently contacted Sonia Ickes to represent my daughter, who has been fighting Glioblastoma Multiforma, Stage 4 brain cancer since 2016. My daughter also had a stroke (caused by the past radiation treatments of her brain cancer) in December 2018 which caused her to become legally blind. My daughter needed to be on disability through the Social Security Administration so that she could also obtain Medicare for her treatments. Sonia had represented clients in the past on Social Security disability and did such an amazing job that I wanted to hire her to represent my daughter. I was wise in my choice of Sonia Ickes. Sonia agreed to take the case. She was very thorough, kind, and competent. She was always available to take questions (we had many), and she got the claim into the Social Security Administration quickly. My daughter received her Social Security Disability in just a few weeks. We could not have done this without Sonia. Sonia is a really intelligent, caring, and highly competent attorney. Ms. Ickes did a terrible job during the time I hired her to represent me. She chose her own course; never kept me informed; did not prepare me for hearing; instead of doing her job in the courtroom, she chit chatted with the opposing attorney. When the hearing had a negative outcome, she did not counsel or advise me of next steps. Shoddy paperwork. Be forewarned.

I came here from a recommendation I’d never take again. I engaged with Erin MacDonald for a probate filing for my father passing away. She couldn’t take the time to explain the process or answer my questions at any time during the almost two year process. The only time she actually talked with me was to sign the engagement. I wasn’t worth spending the time of day on for anything, so she constantly kicked me down to the paralegal on the case. After multiple issues, he once the filings were complete and distribution checks ready to cut, they sent them all out on incorrect check stock and I had to notify them for correction. Which they never explained the process or the fees, the kept extra at the end to cover everything and then still send me bills. This is the worst professional service I’ve engaged. I won’t be back for any legal advice or services from this firm.

He is lazy, cost me custody of my daughter. He keeps paying to have my review removed. He refused to call witnesses and halfway through my case he basically told me we lost and there was no point in continuing.

Sean was recently appointed to me by crook county. He not only resolved my case in a timely manner he kept contact with me 24/7. Every time I called he either answered or called me back in short time. Very impressed with his communication skills as well as his kindness on answering all my legal questions as a friend, not as a paid attorney trying to squeeze a dollar out of me. He not only got me the best deal possible but they wanted minimum 14 days in jail and he got me 2!!! If you want a friend or a understanding lawyer that simplifies the language of lawyer get a hold of Sean. Any future legal problems that I run into this is my lawyer.

I would recommend using Kevin Carolan highly. I hired Kevin Carolan in February 2016. Kevin worked very hard for me and in the end reached a settlement that I was pleased with. I felt that Mr. Kevin Carolan was a very good attorney. He was very professional and was always so calm.
I know Mr. Carolan was always available when it was urgent to speak with him and he would return my phone calls for any questions I had. I felt he was very patient with me as I had to make payments to him over a period of several years and very patient with me when I was a basket case because I was very traumatized at the time. Mr. Carolan would explain things to me as many times as he needed for me to understand what ever something meant etc.
I have had attorneys and a judge that I reported to the state bar because they just dragged my case out and made personal comments about me to other attorneys. I believe Mr. Carolan did his best with what he had to go up against in my case. I also feel that beside his professional job he does as a attorney he is a kind and caring person.

Hired Mr. Wilson to represent me in a misdemeanor case. He had 18 months to prepare for trial. He was unprepared and lost the case to a new assistant district attorney. The kicker is he had the truth on his side. I did not commit any crime. He lost the case because he was completely unprepared and only interested in his fees and not justice. Mr. Wilson has been practicing law for over 20 years but only has two old reviews on this site and very few reviews on other sites. That should be a warning to anyone considering hiring him. Word to the wise, look elsewhere for legal help. Consumer beware!

Mr. Wilson has Defended in two cases a criminal case that he got completely dropped. As well as my DUI I was not able to get a diversion because I was involved in a accident but he got me best possible out come no jail time and very little community service.
He is very intelligent and I highly recommend him.

Beware utilizing Merrill O’Sullivan LLP for Estates and Trusts, they have no commitment to their clients after taking your money.
In September 2016, my mother utilized Merrill O’Sullivan to establish and set up a Trust, an Advance Directive, Power of Attorney, and Last Will and Testament. She spent thousands of dollars with the firm in consultation and fees for the filings and paperwork.
Unfortunately my mother passed away in October 2023. As the Trustee of the Trust, I contacted Merrill O’Sullivan for consultation of the Trust and Will. After a week of the initial contact, they called me back. Instead of setting up a paid meeting, they told me they did not have anyone at the firm that could work with me, and provided the Oregon Bar Association phone number so I could find another law firm to work with.
I was shocked and hurt by this decision. My mother had just passed away a week earlier, and I thought I could receive proper guidance of next steps by the firm my mother had trusted. I expressed my disappointment but it did not matter.
I’m not sure how this is considered ethical or thoughtful. Frankly I was embarrassed for the person that called me back. It was clear this was not the right decision. I would not consider these actions professional, ethical, or considerate. Their actions indicate they have no followup commitment, once they receive their primary fees.
Again, be aware prior to utilizing Merrill O’Sullivan for any Estate or Trust work.

If I could give 0 stars then I would! $20,000 later and they withdraw from representing me because I questioned their actions and choices. Ex spouse was ordered to give me my stuff by or before 3/11/22 and it’s now 5/4/22 and I still don’t have my belongings. The whole process felt like, delay, delay, charge, charge, charge! The very first motion they filed was tossed due to a typo. They will pick and choose when to respond to your calls, texts or emails but the billing department never misses a beat. Zach Santos will make you believe he’s got your back and tell you that you can reach out to him whenever to vent or ask questions however he’ll then say that you’re unprofessional if you question anything. Eryn Sisson his legal aid is even worse! She will yell at you and degrade you on the phone and then not listen to a word you’re trying to say. If you’re in the fight of your life then I highly recommend you look elsewhere! Worst experience ever!

Jeff did his best to prolong a litigation that involved relatives stealing my mother’s house after she died. Not only did he harm me financially, in doing so he cost his client ( the defendant) an exorbitant amount as well. When he was called out on his conduct he doubled down. Hopefully the Oregon bar will sanction him. If you use this awful attorney it is at your peril.

We put a piece of residential land under contract to purchase but Seller did not fulfill his obligations to PARTITION as stated in the contract. Do I sue for Specific Performance? Do I have a case?
