Every year Boston magazine publishes the results for top attorneys in Boston from different legal specialties, from business and criminal law to family and employment law. If there are top 100 attorneys; Edward Wayland would be voted as the top 10 WORST attorneys in Boston. I'm very grateful I had made the right decision to terminate him for ineffectiveness of his counsel. About few years ago, To today's day, I never regretted (terminating) firing Edward Wayland. He almost ruined my life and my freedom. lack of communication, Failure to exercise diligence, ineffectiveness of his counsel, and Incompetence, Incompetence, and Incompetence. I'm in the process of filing a complaint against him to the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseer; Attorney and Consumer Assistance Program (ACAP), I think he should get his license suspended or revoked. (everything I stated here is true except for the top 10 worst attorneys).

I would like to share with everyone the extremely positive experience we had with Attorney Edward Wayland. We were "in the weeds" and getting "bullied" by opposing counsel. Edward just calmly and rationally cut through "the sideshow" intended to distract and turned the situation around 180 degrees. Most importantly Edward held to his integrity and achieved a "just" outcome. I am happy to speak with anyone directly as this is a real experience. You can contact Edward for my details.

I guess most people would never post something online if the lawyer does his job well. To myself, the only thing I would say is Dante Mummolo was super responsible for my case. It's normal to have a paralegal handle things before things get started. Anyways, I got my money!!!

His firm is a huge and impersonal disability/personal injury/workers' compensation mill. I hired Mummolo to represent me in a disability action. At the time I retained him, he seemed knowledgable and professional and he gave me all sorts of assurances about how my case would be handled. The case has been going on for over a year and I haven't spoken to him since. He doesn't call you back if you leave him a message. Instead, your case is assigned to a a supposed "paralegal." You are forced to converse with this person and this person alone. Unfortunately, my assigned clerk is new at the job, doesn't know anything, and isn't particularly interested in learning. As the case has progresses, he has become more and more rude. When I speak to him, it is obvious that he doesn't know anything about the specifics of my case and that he "handles" a great many cases. When I recently became very concerned that updated medical reports had not been submitted to the government for months in my case, I asked the clerk for a copy of my file. He gave me all sorts of excuses and reasons why this was not possible . When I reminded him that the file ultimately belongs to the client and not the attorney, he said that I was "micro-managing" the case. Nothing could be further from the truth. I'm quite sick and am incapable of "micro-managing" anything, particularly this lawsuit. I am just trying to exercise some due diligence. I regret the decision to hire Mummolo.

The worst of the worst. And he has a little midget Associate with Napoleon syndrome. They were rude and arrogant to deal with and not very well liked at the courts by staffing. Won't negotiate and end up costing you more money in the long run. They have a bad reputation in Boston amongst the legal circle and have been dropped by BIG property owners as their counsel. That should tell you something. Atty Cirace & Atty Nadeau are hurting for work. They'll be chasing ambulances next!!

Review of Mansour Chaya I had an excellent experience working with Mansour Chaya on my workman’s compensation case. He demonstrated great communication always keeping me informed and explaining each step of the process clearly. His knowledge of workman’s compensation laws was evident, and it gave me confidence that my case was in good hands. The outcome of my case was very favorable and I truly believe that it was due to the Mansour’s expertise and dedication. Beyond his professionalism, he also provided me with much-needed emotional support throughout the process, which made a significant difference during a stressful time. I highly recommend Mansour Chaya to anyone seeking a reliable and compassionate workman’s compensation attorney.

We previously listed our South End condo with another agent and had been on the market for months. We had countless open houses and advertisements in the Boston Globe. After making the switch to a new agent, Josh Leibowitz had our condo sold within DAYS. He was extremely personable and his expertise in marketing and strategy are unmatched. He was prompt and knowledgeable throughout this entire process, everything was seamless from start to finish! So glad we went with Josh.

Please read this if you are thinking of using this brokerage service to find an apartment/condo. They are NOT worth your time. Tried to use this broker to find an apartment and gave them 2 months ahead of the anticipated move in date. In that time we received only 3 potential apartments (after one month of waiting and having to chase our broker), 1 of which was for only a 2 month rental period (when we made it clear we were looking for a 12 month period). On top of this, our broker simply refused to be proactive, respond to emails in a timely manner or provide any helpful information/tips to help us find a location. The extent of their help was to plug a list of wants we came up with into a computer program. If you can do that yourself, don't waste your time with this provider. You are not a priority, they will not help you.

After being terminated improperly and being sued by the employer (so I was the defendant - thus I couldn't just walk from case), Kevin seemed like the perfect attorney to handle the case which would eventually prove to be a case of just enforcing my employment contract (severance). Despite over two years and over $200,000 in fees - Kevin was not interested in justice or in seeing me get a fair result. He was just happy that he could keep the case going for so long and collect his fees. To get Kevin to return a call I had to make at least 3-4 calls, and even then it was obvious he was returning the call only when it was convenient for him. Likewise, emails were often ignored by Kevin. If he felt the case was not at a decision point, or a point of concern, he would often just blow me off completely and not return the call until he needed something because of some court driven deadline. Kevin is very good at scrambling to get responses to the courts a few days ahead of some court driven deadline. Kevin was completely ineffective at enforcing discovery rules as the plaintiff NEVER produced the documents we requested. When I tried to get a clear understanding of why he wasn't getting the judge to enforce this, Kevin would just mumble how the judge thinks that both sides should just produce things and he shouldn't have to enforce things. I could go on and on. While the plaintiff was just using the court system and the fees to hurt me, drag things out deferring the cash payout, etc.. When it came time to go to trial, Kevin showed his true colors again. As the settlement negotiation pre-trial became intense, it was obvious I was negotiating not only with the plaintiff, but with Kevin. That's right, Kevin was not the confidant I needed in my corner, he was another opponent who I had to worry about. What was his agenda. (spoiler alert: Kevin's agenda are fees and making his life easier). Kevin didn't want to prepare for trial over the holiday weekend. Kevin agreed to terms with the plaintiff without my consent. When I said I didn't want to agree to that, his reply: "Too late, I already agreed to it". What do you do with that. Your too deep to fire him and start over. You want to scream, that's what you do. You take a walk. Kevin was also very deceitful withholding information, negotiating with me to get an agreement on one point before bringing up another point that needed an agreement. And finally, when I had had enough and wanted to go to trial (the week before the trial the judge forced the plaintiff to drop all their frivolous charges and all that remained were my counterclaims per the employment agreement); Kevin decided it was a good time to let me know that even if I win at trial, the plaintiff will probably be able to drag things out for another 2 years with appeals and more fees. I view this as a masterful manipulation by Kevin to get his client (me) to settle for an unfair settlement, but at a point where Kevin was able to extract the most possible fees and avoid the heavy lifting of trial (which would be the hardest work for the attorney). I had many concerns about settling with this plaintiff on a payment schedule vs. being paid out all at once. Kevin assured me he had language in there where with one phone call to him, in one week he could get the plaintiff's accounts frozen and attached and force them to pay. Well, here were are, the plaintiff has breached the payment schedule and Kevin now tells me that it will be 60 days before we could get things fully enforced. True to form, he went off on his own and negotiated a second payment settlement to have the plaintiff pay out over time giving me little to no options (other than go find another attorney to pick up the pieces and we are too far down the line to do that). My recommendation is that if you enjoying being screwed over by whoever your opponent is, hire Kevin and you can double the fun

Mr. Greenman was a late replacement for an eviction-hearing which we had waited several months to arrange with a difficult, non-paying tenant. He seemed nice, but then he got flustered and basically quit in the middle of out hearing. We had a deal with the other party, and he couldn't or wouldn't read the paperwork closely. He then told us to sign flawed documents that didn't support our deal and which later lost us several thousand dollars. I would never, ever use Mr. Greenman for anything that requires negotiation or strong nerves or attention-to-detail. We felt badly misled. We would have been much better off with no lawyer at all than use his services again.

Mr. Ford represented me in my divorce. All throughout his representation he showed no compassion for me and what i was going through. He continually dragged me through unneccesary steps during the process, and ran up large fees. I, as well as one judge, found him to be arrogant and insulting, putting us at a disadvantage. I ended up firing him and finishing the process myself. After firing him, he sent his final bill and, obviously worried that i may not pay the few thousand remaining, two days later he actually put an immediate lien on my home.

I hired Francine to handle my divorce case. Francine represented me through a pre-trail conference and half-way through a deposition of my wife. The relationship had been strained because, in my opinion, Francine did not take the time to listen and lacked empathy. It became more difficult when, during my wife's deposition (Francine questioned her about certain events for the record), Francine spent time texting individuals who were not part of the deposition DURING her questioning. She seemed unfocused and seemed to lose track of her line of questioning. She was interrupted several times by calls and messages on her Apple watch and iPhone that went off during the questioning, causing even more disruption of the proceeding. At one point she left the room to leave her watch in the hallway because she could not operate it to become silent. We could still hear the watch through the door as questioning continued. She seemed embarrassed. Then, she chose to leave the deposition despite the insistence of the other party that they wanted to finish. It seemed Francine had other matters that were more pressing than the deposition. The deposition had been on the calendar for many weeks. When I discussed this with her the next day, my perception was that she became irate. When I asked about the rescheduling of the remainder of the deposition, she did not have a plan and it seemed that it would be at least several weeks before it would be rescheduled, causing it to be pushed right up against the next important court date. I expressed my concern and she became more irate, making characterizations of me in front of her associate who was also in the room. Finally, she indicated that she thought that the relationship had broken down and announced that she was going to withdraw as my attorney. For me, this was not a reasonable outcome and I was confused. Questions I would ask Francine before engaging her: "How many times has your relationship with a client broken down?" "Do you consider it important to listen to your clients?" "Is your concern for how the judge perceives you as important as the representation you provide for your client?" "Does the personal relationship with your client matter to you as much as your practice of the law?" "Is your communication with your team effective and does your relationship with them impact your clients?" "Do you consider it important to keep clients informed about important milestones in the case?" "Do you always give clients ample time to prepare for events or do you give them short notice because your schedule prevents it?" "Do you hold meetings with clients to prepare for depositions and pre-trial hearings or do you "wing it?" These would probably be good questions to ask any attorney and I hope they help guide you to make a decision about working with Francine. The potential costs make investigating your choice very important.

I had to call him 2 months later to check up on my case and he said I will check when I get to my office but to not worry because he will take care of me. That never happened and 6 months later he did nothing on my case until I said I will find another lawyer did he finally return my phone call. First thing he asked me to is to go to court to get him some documents. He didn't preform any work towards my case. I did send him some documents and pictures weeks before the court day he called me on Friday to give me directions to pick him up on Monday from his house and take him to court!! When I asked Mr. Gilbert what is his preparation about the pictures and the documents I sent him for Monday court; his answers was Mr. Gilbert didn't do any filing or provide any work towards my case except returning my phone calls. After doing many rounds within the legal community, I stumbled upon Shilepsky. Within five minutes of my booked call, it was apparent that this litigator had ZERO interest in fact checking, understanding what the client had to say or what even transpired. She knew everything without knowing anything. Shilepsky literally bull dozed over the conversation, without any regards to details or facts and was unbelievable rude. In fact, was evident that she was taking the conversation in whatever direction she wished, had her mind made up. Given, Shilepsky's experience, it was quite jarring as she did charge a steep price for an unprofessional, insensitive exchange. If you don't wish to litigate on behalf of certain people, say no. But then, how would you make money? Terrible experience.

I had Mr. McCarthy as Lawyer for an Industiral accident, it dragged on for over 8 1/2 years. There was repeated harassment by company officials, I repeatedly caught the company doctor in lies. AT&T never paid unused vacation time (I reminded him it was near the deadline and he let it go by without filing for it ( over $6,100). I had 2 witnesses about prior incidents regarding the equipment which led to my injury and he would not check with them. There testimony could have affected what the company would have had to pay out if it was considered negligence, in my favor. He had me pick up an $8.00 rosary for his mother and when I brought it to the office he claimed he had no cash with him and would send me a check---15 years later no check---he claims it was a gift. When the company stated they were about to terminate me unless I went along with company doctors determination I could return to work (he never examined me) [ two surgeons who did thorough examinations found opposite Dr. Waugh's findings] He said he would write a letter to them, the company stated after that I resigned, he agreed. The day that they insisted I return, I was scheduled for presurgical exam and tests, and the company knew it, and deliberately picked that date because of it. At an initial state hearing AT&T was informed they had to pay for upcoming surgery, they refused and I had to. At a later court hearing they were ordered to reimburse me plus 10% annual interest from the day they got the bill until they paid it. They requested and got the reimbursement lowered to workman's compensation rates and waited a few months to pay that after an amount was reached---to date not one cent in interest and he would not bring it up before the judge. I had agreed when the amount was presented to me, figuring the court ordered interest would bring it to about what I had paid, instead I only got about 60% of what I had paid. I know he had other clients from AT&T because he stated how lousy Dr. Waugh was on the stand under questioning, and doesn't mind questioning him beccause he is so lousy. When I was terminated I stated I wanted it to go third party since I now owed the company no loyalty, he claimed we had to go this route first. Before I agreed to the settlement I had told him I wanted him to file a wrongful termination, discrimination against the handicapped suit, he said okay. I had taken this to mean that he would and agreed to sign the settlment papers. I also told him I wanted this to go third party, befor a jury and he said nothing. I had told my father earlier if Kevin McCarthy said no to either I was not going to sign. I figured many things could then come out. HIs okay to the wrongful termination suit and saying nothing to the request to go third party I took to be that he would. Foolish me for trusting him. The settlement did not include for pain and suffering which is standard and normally three times total medical, therapy and related bills, it was just an amount for a permanent 80% loss of function to the leg, which was about 3 years pay. Some lawyers I have talked with later (not on a professional basis) stated with the medical bills and therapy, etc. it should have easily been more than 10 times what I got. Since he was getting paid a third, why didn't he go after this amount? Was I sold out or did he trade me off for easier settlements (faster and less of a fight) for some other clients (some of whom I had foolishly recommended him to). I have since told people who have asked to recommend a lawyer and have given names I wish I knew about then, and I have told them not to go to Kevin McCarthy because he could not be trusted. At the time he was in the law practce of Moren & McCarthy, I have noticed that he now has his own practice. For over a year, after the settlement, I kept calling his office and leaving messages about if he had filed the wrongful termination and discrimination against the handicapped and asked when a hearing might be. The first time he called me back was well over a year later

This firm was predatory and cruel, demanding I tell them an extremely traumatizing recount of events in which I was sexually abused, and told me I was not a victim of sexual abuse, insulted me and traumatized me because I reached out to them seeking representation. They tone of the messages and the communications lead me to believe this firm is intentionally traumatizing those who seek help.

Carmen Durso is the worst person I have ever come in contact with, as a Lawyer he took advantage of me, his Client. Mr. Durso represented me in a very sensitive case, he never returned my telephone calls and refused to keep me updated on my case. I contacted the Massachusetts Bar on him several times and he would not even return their calls. Mr. Durso presents himself as a caring and kind man, an advocate for his clients. Nothing is farther from the truth. He made my life hell and I would be happy to share my experiences with you. Do yourself a favor. Find another Attorney.

This lawyer and his firm had my case for five years, when they could not secure a settlement offer 4 days before trial they damanded that I pay 25,000 or dismiss the case. I had to ask the judge for a continuance until I was able to find another lawyer. It seems no lawyers want to take over other lawyers cases.

I hired this firm and shook this man's hand. He told me the case would take four to six months to review and it has taken twice that time. At the end of that time, I was warned to discharge all my doctors and told that they had filed suit. Imagine my surprise when his associate called me and said they decided not to go forward. Never granted acess to speak to this man after I signed agreement on one day we met, entirely inaccessible. He should not take the opinions of lawyers 4 years out of Vermont law school. Very nice ads but google this firms ratings on other site. AVVO call me to confirm my identity.

I hired Jared. He over promised, and under delivered. He was extremely cocky which made me feel confident in our case. We were laughed out of the court. The judge reprimanded him for false information, and the lawyers behind the bench were laughing at some of his claims. Get ready pay Boston prices for someone who is more concerned about telling everyone how important he is Personally, I think he might be a smart guy, but he absolutely craps the bed in court. He takes no responsibility after the courtroom hearing and will try to spin it that you were lucky to have him.

Attorney Spinelli did not advocate for me and claimed a bad result was some sort of victory. I am still paying the consequences of his representation.

A very unresponsive attorney. Over the course of a year and a half he returned my monthly calls two times. He did not have a clear status on my case the two times I did speak with him and I ended up taking a low settlement offer because he said he couldnt get anymore money for me. His fee ended up being more than what I received. Very dissapointed.

My family made the painful mistake of trusting Attorney Ryan with the settlement of our father's estate. The entire process was drawn out in a long, financially draining manner. Simple tasks were billed for extensive hours and some were even completed by more than one person resulting in double billing. The original living trust was drawn up by Attorney Ryan before our father's passing so one would think that its settlement would be issue-free. This, sadly, was not the case. He consistently had to "consult" with his right-hand woman Tina to determine what should be done (at billable hours). This clearly is a man whose time representing clients should come to an end.

Marc was my attorney in a contentious child support modification case. He is personable but not terribly ethical. For example, there is a law in MA that if you are over 70 then one is entitled to a “speedy trial” under MA Rule 59F. A year and a half of stalling and delays later; that he could have stopped dead via Rule 59F, I finally got a trial date. Imagine the billable hours he racked up. But wait, there’s more: As we approached the trial, this hot shot decided that we needed his junior associate to help litigate. Again, many more billable hours. In hindsight, associate was essentially useless in the process. Under the stress of the litigation process, I yielded to having his associate join the show. Marc could have easily done what needed to be done - alone. Save yourself untold sums of money and seek ethical counsel elsewhere.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.

If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
