I fired Emanuel to represent me in a circus of a divorce and custody case. The case spanned two counties as my estranged spouse had just disappeared and attempted to file for spousal support after being out of mine and the kids' lives for years. Emanuel was able to consolidate all of the case matters to one county and have them heard under one judge for a legal decision on all of the various aspects including the spousal support, child custody, and division of assets. We were able to first locate my estranged spouse and Emanuel was very tactful in his approach and able to get my former spouse served. There were multiple sessions for this case as the estranged spouse was not meeting the bare minimum court requirements or putting any sort of effort forward toward a resolution. Emanuel dealt with frequent last-minute rescheduling of court dates which spawned from constant requests from my former spouse. In the end she lost it a bit and cursed out the entire court and all involved, but Emanuel was able to brush it off and and use the outbursts to our advantage. After multiple warning mail and email messages from the court my former spouse still chose to keep showing up late or postpone the proceedings and finally ended up defaulting on the case. I was able to retain my full custody of both children and all of the marital assets. He was able to strategically play the long chess game and let my estranged spouse move herself into her own checkmate status. During the proceedings this was all obviously new to me so he was able to answer my endless stream of questions as well as explain any legal jargon which I didn't understand with ease. I would recommend him to anyone. Thank you so much from myself and both of my children!

I retained Mr. Mouganis while going through a rather unpleasant custody dispute with my ex husband. It was a stressful and scary time for me, but I found solace in Emanuel. He was able to not only bring my situation to a satisfactory resolution, but he was able to calm my fears and keep me sane along the way. Emanuel is warm and reassuring, he is quick to respond to calls and emails, never leaving me to wonder about my case, and above all else he is incredibly knowledgeable and amazing at what he does. Emanuel Mouganis is exactly who you want in your corner and I can’t thank him enough.

Unprepared and does not listen to the client. Client's interests are secondary to his agenda, which is also unclear. Does not read e mails until after the fact and even then, does not have your back. Does not have the comebacks regarding your case because he does not know what you want and watches the clock while he does most of the talking. You will lose a lot of money and time and the very thing you hired him for, to take the pressure off you and have things under control , he doesn't do. You have to pay attention to everything because it will get forgotten or not done the way you hoped it would be. He seems to be very interested in money but you will lose and you will be shocked. If he prepared, he might even have your argument but you will be on the defensive and eventually will give up or run out of money or both. Needs to be attentive and thorough and listen with fight for his client, at all costs. That is what he is paid for. Before you know it, it is over and you don't even know how it ended up that way.

Seems to give up on everything, does not fight for your cause. Seemed to be working with the other side more than mine. He does not fight. If you want a lawyer that just goes through the motions and really does not seem to work on your case, then this is the lawyer for you. Don't waste your money!!!!!!!

Larry Koss was recommended to me from another lawyer. I went and talked with Larry about my case. He told me he needed his fee paid entirely upfront and he needed to act fast on my case to get some things resolved right away. I agreed and paid Larry in full up front. A total of seven months went by and Larry did nothing but postpone my case telling me he'd arrange a meeting with the district attorney. He did not request any such meeting. After the seventh month went having my calls and certified mail ignored I decided to corner him at court. Larry said to me " I'm real sorry I have been having bad headaches for a year. I actually had my head down in court and a judge demanded I go see a doctor." Larry said he was back on the saddle and he'd do some things. Here now a year later Larry has still not done a thing he stated he would. I decided to inform the judge of my problems. Larry became very upset and hostel towards me. He then promised again to take care of some things. He has not. He had a certain time frame to submit motions and he didn't turn them in on time. I have been trying to get a recording back from him for a month now and he refuses to give it back to me. I think the most disturbing part of this whole mess if he claims he's had headaches for a year, why did he take my money anyway when he know he could not perform in my best interest?

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
