I have used Mark O'hara on several occasions. He has literally saved me thousands of dollars on business deals. After you meet Mark O'hara you think of him more as your friend than your attorney. He comes across more as a big brother or father figure. He is very laid back, and easy going but he can become a bulldog when he has to. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Can't answer basic legal questions. Answers your pretty simple questions with word-vomit. Unprofessional electronic communication etiquette. Can't set up Docu-Sign correctly so demanded trustees print and sign and scan (I live 1400 miles away) like the oldest person you've ever met. Is pretty rude, but what do you expect for a lawyer in Brownsburg, a very un-Hoosier-like suburb?

In all reality, before working with Hostetter & Associates, I was very anxious and nervous about this whole process. But looking back now, no attorney could have gotten back to me quicker than Matt. My expectations were high, and he did such a fantastic job and exceeded them. Thank you a million times.

I wouldn't hire these guys for anything again. Their office over charges for services. For example, I called and had a question, I was on the phone for less than 10 mins but my account was billed 75.00. That happened repeatedly over the course of a 4 to 5 mth period. When I brought it up to my attorney she noticed that I was be charged by the receptists for handling simple paper work, let alone phone calls. I paid them in full 1 mth into my case and my trust account started being drained by unnecessary phone calls to prosecutors. My case was a driving case. I was even charged by my Hostetter and associates for my attorney driving from out of state back to her home then to the office. The out of state trip had nothing to do with my case at all,but I was still charged.

Here I sit, writing a review I wish could be different. The first lawyer I had here was amazing but he earned a promotion leaving me to the wolves. I was bounced from lawyer to lawyer. These lawyers shouldn’t be practicing in my opinion. They overcharged and didn’t make time for me once they had my retainer. I was told I needed to do the research for my own case while they still charged me. I asked for updates hearing nothing. When I did hear from someone the lawyers covered their butts by saying “Just be patient.” Two more months passed without any progress and I received another bill for them doing NOTHING. Don’t waste your time or money. There is also high turnover and if you’re overcharged good luck getting someone to acknowledge it. I also had the lawyer who established this firm and he places blame on other lawyers “running his firm into the ground” but from where I’m standing, he’s teaching them how to treat people. He teaches his lawyers to take advantage of clients in their most vulnerable times. Please do not waste your money here on a divorce or family law case. They will bleed you dry and you will lose everything. Don’t hire them. Update: My case took almost three years and I was with this lawyer for six months. I was with the firm for all of this time. The divorce was taken care of but nothing after that. It was excuse upon excuse. The firm did nothing to advance my case and this was the response for me standing up for myself saying I won’t pay for being overcharged and taken advantage of. Just ask yourself if you want a lawyer or firm who speaks to you this way.

Matt is a top notch family attorney that I was referred to by another local attorney. He respected by the judge and the Gal we were assigned in our case. Must give him the facts, evidence, and don’t expect a bunch of fluff.

Duane Martin and his team took the time to explain everything to me about my case. Very professional and attentive. Duane also took the time to come to my home when I was unable to make it to his office. I would recommend Mr. Martin to handle your case with the utmost care for you in mind.

Very rude receptionist, that is a direct reflection on the lawyer. Apparently, they do not handle civil rights cases. I guess now they handle personal injury, family law, and real estate.

The reason I am discontinuing a relationship with this attorney is their failure to communicate. They do not return phone calls and they do not respond to emails. I can not depend on some one that will not communicate.

Dori and her staff help my family so much as our father was ill. She guided us through the transition from the assisted living to the nursing home. With her help we were able to figure out how to manage the high costs of nursing home care for dad. I would recommend her to anyone needing help with asset protection or other elder law issues.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
