Larry Catlin has helped me multiple times over the past several years. He is quite knowledgeable regarding family law and I have consulted with him about other areas of law. Larry is up front, tells you exactly how things are going, what you need to do and what to expect. He does not sugar coat anything. I have the utmost confidence in Larry's ability to fight and win your case. His fees are reasonable and he works for every dime he's paid. He returns calls in a timely manner, even on weekends. I have recommended Larry to several people. People have told me that you don't want to be on the opposing side of Larry! I believe this to be true!

Mr. Catlin helped me face an ex to be who told me, "I will fight as hard and as dirty as I have to, to take our son from you." When times seemed the darkest I knew that all I had to do was step behind my attorney and let him do his job. I have since been able to move on and find happiness with a wonderful husband.

Went in for a consult and was driven away due to Larry's unfriendly demeanor and all around insulting treatment. This was a few years ago but I wanted to warn others!

It took them nearly 2 weeks to inform me that they could not help me, after taking all my information, due to the case being filed in a county out of their service area, next to the county I reside in, that is in their service area. It would have been nice to have been informed of such in a more timely manner so that I could have sought help from another agency with a more acceptable amount of time remaining before my deadline to file my response to the court. Thanks for nothing!

I found Kassi in the midst of an ugly legal mess with my ex-husband. It centered on my ex-husband's nonpayment of CS, two years after the original order. I was getting called into the AG's court to waste a day every month or two, just for him to fail to show up, and do it all again the next month. When I called Kassi, she showed up and effectively argued for the court to hold him accountable. She continued to work the case for two years, leaning harder into the arguments for accountability each time. She was fierce and very successful at each hearing. She was also very encouraging and comforting when the process drove me to tears more than once in her office. She knew my finances were strained and regularly offered options that would cost me the least amount. She was very practical, strategic, logical and transparent in her legal thought process, which made it very easy to trust her. She successfully navigated my situation to a termination of my ex-husbands parental rights, in the most cost effective way. She will probably never know just how grateful I am for all that she did for me during that time. She was one of my only touchstones in all of the chaos, and she absolutely delivered on it - steady as a rock!

I hired Kassi Horner as my divorce attorney in 2013. I am writing this review because my experience with her is completely different from the other 2 reviews on the website. Ms Horner was extremely response and covered all of the detail of the divorce in a timely manner. She also added a precautionary component to the divorce suite that had not occurred to me.

I hired Kassi Horner to handle a custody issue. I went in and asked her if she would be an aggressive attorney which is what I wanted and needed. She said yes I felt confident that she would get the job done. I signed all paper work and paid the retainer well in the paper work was apparently a non-refundable retainer agreement. ( I did not know this). It would take 5-6 calls to finally get her on the phone to find out what was going on. Every time I talked to her she would say she was just waiting on the other attorney. That was the response I got every time I finally got her on the phone. Another issue came up where I needed an attorney asap and against my better judgement I called Mrs. Horner and the only reason I did that is because she had over $1800 of my original retainer. I spoke to her told her the issue and she said she could help but I would have to put down another $3000 retainer…I asked why because she had the rest of the original retainer. She said it was a new case and I couldn’t use it. I was told that the original retainer could only be used on the one case. I tried to call Mrs Horner 4 times to let her know of a meeting with my daughter’s dad ( the first custody case which the retainer was paid on)and his attorney she never responded so I ended up meeting with them by myself and settling everything. When asked if I could get the retainer back she said no. So now they are holding over $1800 of a $3000 retainer (goes to show how much work was not done in a year). Stay away!!!

This guy Bruno Shimek was all like "I don't have a file on her. You know, went through and looked at all those, and she's not a person that-- you know, Robin Stewart I represented, Aaron Stewart, Eric Stewart. I've checked all those, but not Erma." But his name was on Erma Faye Stewart's plea agreement, okay, so I guess he's incompetent AND a liar. THEN, this so-called confidential informant that they had over in Robertson County that got 27 people indicted basically was not reliable because he was whack-a-doo and had a long history of psychiatric disorders and the DA threw out all of the cases, exceppt for the people who had already plead to reduced charges. Those people got screwed because basically it came out that this guy was a fraud, but they still had to do their probation and pay fines and have permanent records because he rushed them into a plea. Mr. Shimek had he even done like a tiny scintilla of inquiry he would have realized that the sole witness was fruit loops and then could have gone to the DA like "Yo, your witness is F'd up and I'm gonna wreck him on the stand. My client isn't pleading to caca. We're going to trial you cacahuate!" But instead he just rolled over. And he didn't even tell Erma to get a better hat. That's how bad his advice was both legal and fashion. But seriously, if my dog got a ticket from animal control I would not let the dog judge appoint mr. shimek as his lawyer for dog court. I would definitely pay money to retain a real lawyer dog.

The lawyer filed all the paperwork but not much else. She was going through motions for the most part. She honestly seemed too busy to handled my case and it showed. She often had to change my court dates because of her schedule and billed me for the time it took her to file the paperwork to include her Vacation time. If you need an attorney who is on your side, I'd look somewhere else. After 14k, I'm looking for a new attorney.

This is classic garbage for an attorney. In February of 1996, on my 19th day on the job, I was told to enter a building at a location where I had never been before. I was a truckdriver who had witnessed part of the murders of the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas on April 19, 1993. The company I went to work for, out of Green Bay, Wisconsin began to try recruiting me to work for them almost immediately after that. As I stepped into the building, it was totally dark, suddenly and immediately, a voice to my left said (it was the voice of the company representative who had climbed up to the top of the tank) " The fill line is directly above you ... over head!" but the drain valve is over here beneath me, you have to step around the tank to see it!" Startled and disoriented because of the darkness, I relextively stepped sideways to the left. Unknown to me the floor plates had been removes. I flipped over upside down and head first, the back of my hard cap struck the razor sharp edge of the 3/4 inch angle iron frame bouncing me up, sitll upside down, backward and head first and dropping me eight feet to the floof below, two fo my finger nails were ripped off , 14 teeth were fractured , my neck was broken at C5 and C7 in the cervical spine. The rotator cuff in my right shoulder was torn and my right hip landed on a four inch pipe manifolded across the floor. My employer and the employee responsible for this "accident" did not even call a doctor for me. I eventually had to quit to seek medical treatment. the Employer Schneider National Carriers of Green Bay, covered up everything. When I got out of the sleeper during my last dispatch into Houston, my feet began to itch almost immediately. I didn't think too much about it at first because fo the heavy traffic. Finally, when I got to Hempstead, I removed my boots. My feet were a bloody mess. As I attempted to remove my socks, the skin on the top of my feet came off. The co-driver, a homosexual had laced my boots with a hazardous chemical. Every branch of law enforcement blocked any kind of investigation I tried to initiare. I realized the "accident" of 13 Feb 1996 had been an attempted murder but did not tell my wife becuase of her poor health. I finally retained Stuart Lewis because we were getting medical bills that supposedly had been for treatment by Texas Workers Compensation (which is a joke). The collection agencies including doctors offices would call my residence around the clock 24 /7 on the hour demanding payment. The Bryan Texas Field Office and the late Office Manager, Geraldine Urso, were worse than usless. When I retained Lewis, I asked him to write a letter to the collection agencies and doctors pto prevent them from calling our house. Instead, Lewsi told us to "just go ahead and pay them but to give him all of the receipts, especially the originals. After six years and $130,000 out of pocket, my wife went to his office for the first time and asked an inexperienced intern if she could see my folder. There was not one receipt in it. Studart Lewis had destroyed every receipt and I had received no medical treatment at all. It was all a joke to him. But TWCC was actually paying him to represent me. I filed a complaint with the Texas State Bar to have Lewis Disbarred. The hearing was at the Brazos Center in Bryan, Texas on May 20, 2000. Lewis was lawyered up with Jim James of Bryan, one of the best criminal defense attorneys in Texas. During the hearing, Lewis admitted telling me to pay all of the buills and that he had purposely destroyed the receipts that he had told me to give him. He also testified that not once during the time he supposedly represented me did he contact Schneider National Carriers of Green Bay, Wisconsin, the employer who had caused these debilitating injuries. Attorney Jim James, Lewis's attorney actually got up and walked out of the hearing - abandoning his own client when he heard what Lewis had done. The hearing was concluded shortly afterward.

  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
