Attorney Melfi, Margo, Kim, and Ken were exceptional. They handled our case with diligence, care, and professionalism. They were outstanding when we were hit and injured by an uninsured driver. We highly recommend Betras Kopp.

I contacted Ketras Kopp after getting a recommendation from a Florida attorney. I needed an Ohio attorney. I was contacted by Jim Melfi. He immediately understood what I needed and worked on getting a settlement from a real estate firm. After only a few weeks an agreement was worked out and I have received a payment! I had waited several years for this and Jim Melfi obtained a final agreement very quickly. He was responsive to every one of my text and emails. I am totally impressive with Mr. Melfi and the Betras Kopp firm. Five star.

I went through an unwanted divorce. Chris and his entire staff were nothing short of wonderful to me, throughout the entire process. Everyone was kind, professional, and worked hard to see that I was treated fairly, which I ultimately was. I will forever be grateful to him, Cheryl, and the rest of the staff.

Too Cool Chris Represented me in an open and shut , sure win custody battle for my daughter. Chris was bullied by an attorney named bogut. Eventually we came to an agreement and recieved custody. Chris left us vulnerable in so many ways in the agreement that we thought we were covered. Not like he answers his calls but never would respond afterwards.

My father unexpectedly passed away in 2020 from COVID without a will. An attorney for them - Dan Babyak - said he could resolve it in about 6 months. FOUR YEARS LATER (of that guy giving us his number, then telling us not to use it after ghosting us for months, just up and leaving without notice, and getting the subsequent run around from several attorneys and/or paralegals after), it's just now... in 2024... reaching a conclusion. How did that happen, you ask? Not THIS firm, that's for sure. We ended up contacting another firm to take over, which caused Friedman and Rummel to rush to wrap it up. Maybe the entire firm isn't incompetent, but if Dan Babyak was able to keep employment there for any matter of time, I've got to question the judgement of the entire operation. If you're considering this firm, skip to what we did after FOUR YEARS, and find another firm. I recommend Silas Pisani from Slater and Zurz in Akron. I can't in good conscience recommend Friedman & Rummel, or DAN BABYAK, wherever that clown is these days for legal matters. Based on my family's experience, I doubt they have the legal competence to recount an episode of Law & Order accurately, let alone settle your legal matters in a timely fashion. Hindsight is 20/20, but learn from our mistakes and RUN in advance. EDIT: I now see that we were not the only people with these issues, and years apart, no less. Seriously, check out Slater & Zurz and avoid the hassles that seemingly come with F&R.

If you like to be lied to and treated like garbage then this is a good place to throw money to; terrible personal injury FIRM! Four long miserable years of their negligence! Attorney Betras “promised” on more than one occasion to personally handle my claim. Attorney Betras did not handle my claim, as he stated to me. He never called me back with corrected or updated info… always “let me check and get back with you”; but NEVER did. Attorney Betras did not come to mediation. Attorney Murkota arrived late to mediation. Attorney Murkota tried to threaten me that he could legally keep 40% of my net; pressuring at the time of mediation. Attorney Murkota was not part of this firm when I signed with them June 2018. No one contacted me prior to mediation to go over the procedure or what to expect. I was lied to the entire 4 year period and suffered economical hardship during the entire time. Lack of representation and professionalism! If your case is not worth millions, then you get treated accordingly!

David was my criminal lawyer for 4+ years. Initially, he was able to negotiate a plea agreement for me, but his negotiating style was to simply give into the US Attorney in most cases. I basically had no choice to accept, and David used scare tactics to get me to agree. When in court, David fumbled over his papers and questions to witnesses. The DA was more prepared than my own lawyer. Then David basically abandoned me when I was on probation, and it took weeks at times to get him to return my phone calls. I kept David as my lawyer, as there was little to do in my case -- when he did have to submit motions, it was a difficult experience. He wouldn't listen on the phone. He put a junior lawyer who hadn't passed the Bar yet on the case, who I learned he paid $11/hour (and charged me $75/hour for his services). Frankly, this junior lawyer was better than David who would make many mistakes on the motions -- some of which I'd catch, and others were submitted to the courts with mistakes on dates and details. I found myself complaining about David to this junior lawyer, who agreed with my concerns, and told me that David also yelled at him all the time. One time, David met me for a meeting at a restaurant, and literally played trivia games on his phone (asking me to help with the questions). Then he announced that he had to leave after we'd spoken about my case for less than 15 minutes. Basically, David always has to be right about everything. He will argue with you, scream at you, be condescending, be passive-aggressive, etc. For all the years as my lawyer, David never once gave me a detailed hourly statement, which I requested many times. He would just negotiate for every dollar and not do the work until he was paid in advance, and when you need things to be done on a criminal case, you're in no position to negotiate. While I was in jail, I had to give David power of attorney and use my credit card. He paid himself, and then didn't pay the credit card bill costing me over $1,500 in interest and penalties, which I did't discover until I got out of jail. Several times I asked David to help intervene with my probation officer -- his tactic was to tell me to do everything they said, or "they will put you back in jail!". I was very scared, and didn't know what to do. In the end, David abandoned me when I had a probation violation. He refused to take my calls from jail, or calls from my friends/family until I paid him another $25,000 on top of the $200,000+ I'd already paid him. David wouldn't even recommend another lawyer. It became all about the money, and he dropped me as a client in my time of great need. I had no choice but to hire another lawyer at considerable cost just to get up to speed on my case. David refused to help this new lawyer, and literally wouldn't give him any of my case materials from the years he'd been my lawyer, which made it very difficult for the new lawyer to represent me.

I made an appointment with Mr. Price and was called the next day and asked to reschedule. With some difficulty I rescheduled for a later time. Because of prior commitments I was 5 minutes late for the appointment. When I arrived there was no-one at the reception window. A young man came to the window after a few minutes and then went to tell Mr. Price I was there. Long story short, after another 10 minutes a woman came to the window and told me I must reschedule AGAIN because someone else had an appointment 15 minutes after mine. I drove 45 minutes to get to Mr. Prices office and because I was five minutes late they think I would make the same mistake again by rescheduling AGAIN. I left wondering how much time would be devoted to my case if they could not spare the five minutes that I was late.

Highly unethical. Used his power to be the lien attorney, trust attorney and title attorney with my husband. This gave my husband the ability to take all assets out of my name and to steal our gas lease of $487,000. That left me with debt of nearly 100,000. when my husband and I divorced one year later. He is also a judge ..... who allowed my husband to put me in jail by lying that I assaulted him. Stay away from him ...

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
