My experience with the attorneys at Schonberg Law started almost 3 years ago. From our first meeting to the last, my experience with everyone has been nothing short of outstanding! All the staff are extremely knowledgeable, professional and friendly. The many questions I had throughout this process were always promptly answered by either my attorney (Ryan-shout-out!) or the experienced paralegals in the office. I highly recommend the practice of Schonberg Law should you find yourself in a situation that requires a reputable, professional and empathetic team of lawyers!

I slipped and fell outside my home. I went with another law firm located in the Hudson Valley. But I wasn’t satisfied with them. A good friend of mine, suggested that I see if Bruce Schonberg would handle my case! She referred to him as “an experienced ballet dancer in the courtroom! She said that he did an awesome job for her, and she believed he would do the same for me! I found what she said to be true. Their advertisement “if you want Bruce Schonberg, you’ll get Bruce Schonberg! And that’s a promise “ is truly the truth. Mr. Schonberg came to my home. He is smart, kind, and honest. He made me feel at ease. I trusted his record of 35+ years! I knew when he left my home, I was in good hands. The staff is nothing short of being the “Brightest Stars in the Universe “! They worked during the pandemic. They worked with masks, without masks. They worked in the office, they worked from home. The entire staff worked tirelessly on my case. Victoria dove so deep into my medical history, she found injuries that I had dating as far back as the late 1980’s. I forgot I’d had those injuries. It wasn’t uncommon to see her carrying the many files, often many more than she is tall. We had a standing joke, that I have my own medical records room! Amelia and Tania, answered all my phone calls, always pleasantly. Five whole years of questions and requests. But they were never the less professional, always. I have to give a special “shout out “ to Ryan Fagen. He was right by my side during the damages portion of my lawsuit. I found this to be the most complicated part of the lawsuit. His explanations, were clear and understandable. Everything he said would happen, did! He really worked on my behalf. To see this lawsuit finally come to fruition is wonderful. I am very pleased and grateful for my settlement! The staff, who work at Schonberg Law in Hudson Valley are awesome!

This is the third time John O'Friel will be assisting me in closing on a property in Orange County, NY. Do not let his relaxed personality fool you, he is extremely detailed orientated and has always done a excellent job with all my real estate transactions. When I was a first-time home buyer, he walked me through every single step and explained everything. I highly recommend him to anyone in need of a real estate closing attorney.

Mr. Schonberg was the main reason my situation improved. Every single aspect of my case was personally handled by Bruce himself. Looking a Bruce fighting for my rights made me regain faith in the legal system and equality for all, regardless of social and ethical differences. Bruce's assistant...in my humble opinion..Victoria is and outstanding practitioner always providing professional and confidential treatment to all my questions or concerns during the litigation. This is the second time I hired Mr.Schonberg, I highly recommend and suggest at least consulting his firm before going to any other firm regardless how many advertising the others have.Bruce's dedication and accuracy was excellent. I have the highest respect and professional admiration for Schonberg Law Firm. I would highly recommend this firm..no doubt.

I don't know how he is with his "injury" law specialty, but as far as a real estate attorney he is horrible and unprofessional! He was hired as a recommendation from my realtor and seemed ok at first, but things quickly turned into a nightmare. The seller kept pushing back the closing date out of contract, the seller did not fix the things that were supposed to be fixed in the contract & the seller wanted me to payback for the unused utilities in the house which was not stated anywhere in the contract! Mr. Schoanberg instead of fighting for me took the seller's side & just wanted me to sign the papers!!! Also want to add that the buyer chooses the day, time & what bank to close at, but Mr. Schoanberg let the seller decide that so I had to take off work & drive and hour out of my way. We were so excited for our new house we went through with this non-sense, I should have fired him and used another attorney. I hope other people don't make the same mistake using him for realty. You get Bruce Shoanberg, thats a sure thing...whats more sure is that he does not fight for his clients!

Mr. Bruce Schonberg is the best attorney ever! I myself am a licensed attorney in Colombia, and he defended me in a very complicated legal matter with excellent results. I know when an attorney cares and is interested in helping and getting things done. His staff was knowledgeable, reliable and ready to solve my questions. If you want a team who cares about you, who will fight for you, that would be Mr. Schonberg and his well-trained staff. Thank you Mr. Schonberg, you really saved my profession.

I met the right person for the worse time in my life. I didnt know how to hire a divorce attorney cause it wasn't written in the hand book of life. I made no mistake in hiring Justin Kimble. It wasn't even about the money, it was the principle of respect, integrity, and a duty for fairness that I experienced with Justin. He did not sugar coat anything for surprises headed my way during the process of divorce. I was treated with respect and compassion. Justin left no room for drama. His time management and details to attention were point for a fair resolution. If there was something I didn't want to hear against my favor, I still was coached by Justin. I would never wish divorce on anyone but would definitely recommend Justin to help realize it can be the best outcome for happiness

Got recommended to David, paid $300 to have consult with David. David told us when he takes on a client they can call him day or night he will always be there, got our hopes up about winning and getting full custody for $10,000 retainer. Once we paid the retainer he left for 4 months to live in Arizona for the winter leaving us with a no name lawyer that we have never heard of? After 4 months he came back and we never heard a word from him, i called him and he never returned my phone calls, i emailed him and he said we hired the firm not him. His law firm completely destroyed us, unknowledgeable, unreliable and unethical. we went to court 4 times and they claim that spent the $10,000.

Do not even think about hiring him if you are woman filling for divorce. I paid him almost $8,000 and I'd not even get child support in the 2 1/2 years he represented me. Twice the judge ordered him to file my child support through support collection and it was never done. He tried to convince me that I would get nothing from my future ex husband, yes I am still married after all of this. I took off countless days of work for court dates that never even happened. He was best friends with my ex's lawyer and let the lawyer call me a b**** to my face, some great representation. Finally I told him I would not pay him another dime until I got some results. The day before I had court he called me and told me was not representing me anymore but that I had to show up to court the very next day alone. His firm even gave me the wrong address for the court and when I finally got to the correct courthouse they told me he himself had cancelled the court date. Another wasted day off of work lost time and money and serious frustration. This guy is trying to run for family court judge and I quote " because someone has to stick up for the fathers" what about the mothers? We are the ones taking care of the kids everyday supporting them while the deadbeat fathers get away with no responsibilities. One of his rude clients interrupted us at court and David totally ignored me because the man had just gotten a multi million dollar settlement when he returned to me he told me that was an important case because that client paid him$11,000 . He needs to be reported to the bar for his sexist discrimination agains women and if he gets appointed to a family court judge all the single mothers out there are in serious trouble. Hiring him was a complete nightmare and waste of $8,000 still married, no child support for 3 children ages 7,4,2,. He really makes me sick p.s. I left my ex with the house brand new car everything, all I asked for was a divorce and child support and I got absolutely nothing!!!!!!!!!

I hired him to handle 2 things in my divorce!! First one was get me my personal property out of My home as in clothing. Second was my order of protection that my wife had against me. Hasin was very corky and bold saying I will get you your property and handle that order. He had about 3 weeks to prepare the day of court he gets up there in front of the judge and tells her he is new to the case as is not prepared to proceed today. Then let's the judge slam the order of protection to be extended another month. He gives me a stupid excuse and runs off long story short he never got me my stuff and even let my wife lawyer hanging about my property. Then he just vanished with my money the judge even couldn't understand his actions. He will not return my calls or emails and has gone missing.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
