I cannot recommend Alex Kelly highly enough. He was incredibly diligent, understanding, and compassionate throughout my entire case. His deep knowledge and expertise were evident every step of the way, which gave me complete confidence in his abilities. Alex truly listened to my concerns, took the time to explain everything clearly, and ensured I felt supported during what could have been a very stressful process. If you need an attorney who genuinely cares and delivers exceptional results, Alex Kelly is the one to call.

I was referred to them. No help at all. The company I worked for did their own investigation after I reported a year of sexual harassment and racism. They told me the managers will receive disciplinary actions. I got a 15 min free consultation wry noble law firm. He tell me theirs nothing much he could really do bc I may get lost wages less than 3000$ and his attorney fees are way more than that. And basically he couldn’t represent me. So this place is no help

First of all, I would like to make clear that we did not chose to work with Ms. Nance at Bagwell Holt Smith P.A. She was chosen by the buyers of our home in Durham, and we had no choice but to work with her. Upon receipt of our estimated closing documents, we informed Ms. Nance that the payoff amount was incorrect (too high). When we pointed this out, we were met with the condescending reply that we simply did not understand how to read out mortgage documents. The next day, when we presented Ms. Nance with the correct payoff amount in the form of an email with a pdf from our lender attached, we were accused of "borderline harassment" for having pointed out her careless mistake. The closing documents were corrected. Later, while we were signing closing documents, we were informed by our neighbor that there were people trespassing on our property. The timing of the trespassers seemed quite suspicious to us because the only people who knew we would not be at home were myself and my partner, our realtor, a mobile notary, and Ms. Nance's office. As we had not approved of anyone entering the property, and because we suspected that they may have been under the direction of Ms. Nance, we informed her that we were not aware of not did we approve any requests for people to come onto our property, especially as the Due Diligence period had closed. Her response was that it was the survey her office had ordered to be done during the Due Diligence period, which had been delayed, and said that he had no legal right to deny them. I am not an attorney, however I believe I would have been fully in my rights to have called the police on the trespassers onto our private property given the Due Diligence period had been closed and we were never notified that a survey was going to be done. Our final grievance with Ms. Nance concerns her preparation of our tax documents. We first received one 1099-S form from Ms. Nance's office containing only the social security number (SSN) of my partner. As we are unmarried, we file our taxes singly and so I requested that we be sent two 1099-S forms, one for myself and one for my partner. Though we never consented to electronic documents, we were emailed pdfs of our 1099-S forms however this time Ms. Nance had switched our SSNs so that my SSN was on Jason's form and vice versa. Her response was she just put them in the order they were in on another form (and didn't bother to check that they were correct). I replied asking the corms to be corrected, again, and to be mailed. We then received copies of the 1099-S forms in the mail which had our incorrect SSNs. Upon notification, Ms. Nance re-sent the pdfs of the corrected 1099-S forms. I have once again requested hard copies be mailed as we never consented to electronic delivery of these documents. While preparation of all these documents may be rote to Ms. Nance, they are extremely important to us and have significant impact on our finances. The carelessness employed by Ms. Nance throughout this process is extremely unprofessional. While everyone should be double and triple checking any document they sign, it is easy as a first time home seller to be overwhelmed with the sheer amount of paperwork that goes into selling a home. One should be able to trust that the parties preparing such important documents (and collecting payment accordingly) would have the ability to prepare them correctly and with care. I am glad that we reviewed everything carefully and am sorry for those who have unknowingly been victims of Ms. Nance's carelessness and unprofessionalism.

I recently went through a life-threatening situation and needed professional help. Melissa was recommended as a highly experienced lawyer, which I cannot deny. However, our first impression of her was not what we expected. We were greeted by the front desk lady and she was very kind and offered us water. She then told us Melissa was ready for us. When we walked in, she told us she had to fill out some things with another person before our consult (we arrived early) so we told her it was fine. Once done, she did not even introduce herself or even asked how we were doing. Although I understand it is a timed consult, I believe she should have at least greeted me (the client), my dad and sister. Being that I am young and it is my first time dealing with legal procedures, I am very naive and she asked for specific papers I did not know about. I had brought other documents that I thought she would want to read but she was not interested in that. I continued with my story and before I could finish it, she cut me off and said she would not represent me. Since we had already paid, we stayed. She was still very nonchalant, but I was able to get a little bit good out of it. I would not recommend Melissa as our first impression of her was unprofessional coming from a lawyer of that caliber, my expectations were high but I was let down by her.

I had the pleasure of working for the Melissa and her team for 2 years. Had I not moved out of NC I would still be working there. Melissa was an excellent boss and teacher. Though at the time i had over 12 years of experience, none of them were in family law. Her and the team took the time to teach me the ins and outs of family law. I moved knowing if I took another position in family law, I would have the knowledge to succeed. I will always appreciate my time with the Averett team!

Patterson Harkavy LLP claims to handle employment matters for employees, but my experience was completely the opposite. They turned me away without even bothering to do an intake to review my claim. When I tried to follow up by phone, no one ever answered. If you're dealing with legal issues, I wouldn't recommend reaching out to them—they're unresponsive, and it's clear that employment matters are not their priority. Very disappointing.

The first time I worked with Laura was on a prenup and gave substantial time yet I didn't get it until the NIGHT before my wedding after pushing to get it. I always got a voicemail and it was frustrating. That was 2.5 years ago. My husband had a revision done as we are closing on a house and I need her to go over it with me (shouldn't take more than thirty minutes). I have been trying to get someone in her office and have even emailed her, for a week now with absolutely no call back...none. I am going to need a copy of my prenup before I can attain another lawyer and I have no idea if anyone will ever call me back.

Incredibly hard to reach. Emailed and called for months with no response. I had to do all the work and she repeatedly dropped the ball, until finally I basically lost my case because of her. She never even sent a finalized document after the case was over, or a bill. I'm sad to write this, but I gave her MONTHS and months to make things right and never did.

I was referred through a DV agency. I was barely employed and afraid that I would lose my children. Laura at the time was near the end of her pregnancy so the Irwins worked on my case as a team. They I felt were very compassionate and professional. Because is was a smart thing for me to leave the marital home, I and my children were in a shelter program. Which helped me to stand on my own two feet financially. The Irwins billed me without complaints and never slacked because I could not pay at the time. I was so appreciative that I understated what I could pay one month so as to surprise them with a complete pay off that same month. I knew that they deserved every penny and more. It was the best investment I ever made. There were even returns on that investment as Laura gave me legal advice and guidance unsolicited. I was both humbled and empowered by the thought that she actually cared about me and my family. Something you do not always get from a lawyer. My family is now a success story to which I cast the Irwins in as a major part. Today I own my home, have one child in college, the other getting top grades in h.s. and I work with families in need hoping to make good on the Irwins investment in me. This firm helped me at a pivotal point in my life and were nothing but caring, professional, knowledgeable and kind. I will forever be thankful.

We hired Adrian Halpern for our case of Adjustment of Status for a National Interest Waiver (EB-2). We chose him because we had a referral at the workplace and because during the initial consultation he seemed to us more up-to-date with the most recent changes the National Interest Waiver process. From the point of view of his experience in this specific area of the Immigration Law we had nothing to complain. Unfortunately, even if our case was finally approved, the service offered was unsatisfactory. Below are the reasons: - we regularly waited several days (and in some cases more than a week) for his response to the emails we sent requesting important information or updates. - no one never answered the phone at his office. - he forgot an appointment set and confirmed in advance and he didn't show up at his office - we prepared and reviewed some of the documentation needed for the case, basically anticipating his work, because we felt that the process was taking too long - he was constantly mentioning family and personal duties or simply "I did not have time" as the reason for delayed responses and appointment setting. - to our request to help for the expiration of the current visa approaching soon, he seemed to have lost interest in our case and advised to call the toll-free number of USCIS to get an update and he wished "GOOD LUCK" - during a meeting, he told us that we did not have to complain and that we needed to wait because he had other things to do in the next couple of weeks. This just because, as a client, we asked if it was possible to speed up the process. - he did not even propose to join us for the interview scheduled at USCIS, basically ignoring any further assistance, just stating: "you will be approved". - after our final interview with USCIS, he never followed us to ask if everything went fine. To conclude, we always had a respectful and kind manner as clients and he had a friendly and relaxed manner. But during such a delicate and stressing time as the Adjustment of Status, due to his non-responsiveness and poor service, we were left in the aura of uncertainty that didn't give us peace of mind.

Ms. Wagner allowed my divorce and child custody case to drag out for almost 2 years. She did little to no work, would sometimes go for months at a time with no contact, and when it came time to sit down with my wife and her attorney, she sat there silent while the other attorney lambasted me. Afterwards, she told me that I had "caved".

Ms. Reynolds was my attorney for family law issues. She was up against a B team opposing cousel firm and lost badly. She neglecdted to include relevant information in presentations, and in pretrial hearings she was oblivious to the fact that she and me as her client were being beat up badly. Even when I pointed it out to her. I have a great deal of experience with attorneys and from now on I trust my instincts more. I thought we were being hammered, I told her so and she didn't see it. It was verging on malpractice is my opinion. She talks the talk but she cannot walk the walk. I spent 10,000 with her and probably moved backwards $20-30 K in the property settlement as a result. I don't really like any attorneys but this one I really dislike. Poorer but wiser.

I hired Ms.Thompson to represent me on a banishment case and I was challenging the state of North Carolina. I had a good case and a good grounds to get my banishment overturned but every legitimate issue I discussed with her she would shoot the argument I brought up down. It was as if she was a prosecutor working against me instead of for me. Every message I left it took a week or more to get a call back and every time I tried to talk with her she treated me as if I were a rock in her shoe. I wouldn't recommend hiring her based on my experience with this attorney.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
