We were referred to Mr. Berke by a friend who used him and loved him. My husband and I were unfortunately in a car accident where my husband was injured and unable to work. Mr. Berke was very good about communication, he seemed to understand what we need and most importantly, he got us an exceptional result. I would highly recommend this attorney.

He is a horrible man. He took my case and dropped me for no reason 2 months before the statue of limitation ran out and could not give me a reason why. It's my opinion that he took a payout from this company I was suing just so I'd keep my mouth shut.

Excellent and professional. I had retained another lawyer and the divorce just dragged on forever with no forward motion. Sandy came in and saved me. She is always kind and available and she really took care of the little details that can trip you up later. I HIGHLY recommend Mrs. Bott.

Over the years, Mr. Habenicht has helped our family in several different matters. It is always a pleasure dealing with him. Not only is he knowledgeable in a variety of legal matters, he is kind and always explains things to us. He returns calls and makes himself available when we need him. I have and will continue to highly recommend him!!!

My experience with Mr. Habenicht bears no resemblance to the other reviewers. I've engaged him for services several times in the last two decades--everything from civil suits to will preparation to estate probate. I have found him to be professional, knowledgeable, ethical and reasonably priced. His services have been invaluable to me.

I had a very complicated divorce situation. Mr. Habenicht did the best he could to represent me. However, my wife's attorney misrepresented the facts and provided inaccurate and incomplete information to the Hamilton County Court. The Hamilton County Court based their ruling on the opposing attorney's material false statement and my case was dismissed in Tennessee. I'm disappointed in the Hamilton County Judge that dismissed my case because he listened to fabricated lies rather than the truth.

I am a single father and raising a 7 year old daughter by myself. Upon taking my ex wife back to court for back child support she filed a counter petition claiming there had been a meterial change in circumstances as she was now remarried. The trial judge Jerri Bryant for some unknown reason ruled in favor of my ex saying that we would now have joint custody. I then hired Mr. lawrence waho advised me "your making me start a race with a wrecked race car but we will see what happens". I appealed the decision to the tennessee court of appeals and won. Nothing is more important than your child and Im not sure I could have handled loosing my daughter so thanks Phil. I owe you everything.

I had a court appointed laywer. He failed to file the writ of certiorari which stopped the appeal. The Tennessee Court of Appeals contacted the lawyer, they found problems in my transctript. It was only 43 years later that I found this out.The state had no proof,no weapon,no money, and no witness's.The Tennessee Appeals set aside my verdict and reinstated it to give the lawyer more time to file the writ of certiorari. If he had done so my sentence would probably have been over turned and I would have been freed. He still never filed and the court agreed that I had ineffective assistance of counsel. I am only asking to have this expunged from my record.I served the time all those years ago. You are that Lawyer. The Tennessee board of parole will not help unless you will send me a letter stating why you did not file the writ of cert. I spent four and a half years in prison for a crime I did not do. And 48 years later I am still being punished. I just want my record cleared. The Tennessee court of appeals set aside my conviction so you would have more time to file. They said in their judgement that they contacted you, But you still never filed. Please you can help and make a big different in my life Thank you in advance for your time and trouble. BILLY

Initially there was a person on my case that was professional and advocated for me very very well. I felt very protected because they were very competent... they were Taking care of serious matters from the opposing side for me in my divorce wich was riddled with violence, threats, and harassment. Suddenly that person disappeared from the office with no explanation then I was Unfortunately made to deal with Mr. Purple who can not hear well at all anymore and has gotten up in age, as a result he has become extremely incompetent and belligerent! When I would respectfully ask for explanations or help I was met with him being rude and condescending. I was no longer protected at all! He was sometimes plain old DISRESPECTFUL which, was so disappointing because he had initially seemed very sweet. But I was wrong... he would be rude when he couldn't understand you because of HIS hearing loss and, it was very disheartening. He did not advocate for myself or my children properly in ANY way!! There were clearly unsafe situations and not once were we advocated for! There was no attempt to protect my children and it was disgusting because he gotten paid to protect us. Dealing with him was one of the most horrible experiences of my life..and it was an Extremely TRAUMATIC experience. He truly may have been amazing in his prime but those days are very far gone! .I have to be honest. I would not recommend working with Jim Purple!!! Run While you Still Can because We were mistreated and the only person that knows anything about what they're doing is the paralegal TOD..... I 1000% regret hiring JIM PURPLE WITH THE PURPLE LAW FIRM!! * [footnote] *I am a REAL Client but because of domestic violence I am remaining anonymous for myself and my children's safety

I hired Mr. Summers to represent me for a DUI charge in East Ridge court. He was in the media a lot at the time and seemed to be one of the best attorneys in our area. Definitely very knowledgeable. From my experience he does a cattle call on a Saturday morning and has all of his potential customers show up so he can do his dog and pony show. He has everyone show up at the same time and you just wait until he calls you in. I felt like he was a car salesman and really trying to sell himself to me. Well, it worked because I hired him. Of course I paid an extra fee for him having to come to court on a Tuesday night. With that I ended up paying his total fee off prior to my first court appearance with him. That night he had several clients. I watched one by one as he called them into the hall to discuss the case and then come back to talk to the judge. He never called my name so I went out to him in the hall. He asked my name, I told him what it was and he started walking away from me to another client. I went back up to him and asked what was going on. He got angry with me and said that he runs a business and that in order for him to operate his business he needs his clients to pay him. He was a real jerk the way he was talking to me. Then I got pissed and told him he needed to check his records because I had fully paid him. I pulled the receipt out of my wallet and he was stunned. His attitude changed. He represented me and I was convicted of a 1st offense when it was technically my 2nd. Not sure if I could have done any better since it was all done in East Ridge. The icing on the cake was getting a letter from him a couple weeks later asking for basically a "bonus" check for achieving what he called favorable results. I didn't owe it and he didn't deserve it. I personally believe there are better attorneys to work with out there other than Mr. Summers.

Of course, was arrested for first DUI. Mr. Hill was hired the following week. He was recommended by the bail bondsman. Not once did I get a call from his office regarding my case. Mr Hill had no intention of trying to get my charges plead down and my outcome was exactly the same as it would have been without his 'services'. My last day in court over this matter, I happened to see Mr. Hill in the courtroom. I said to him "Well I didn't expect you to be here." He just shrugged.

Makes promises he doesnt know if he can deliver. I found him nice but after I paíd him, his whole demeanor changed, very rude, arrogant, and dont think about firing him, u wont get ur money back, but got to say he is a good lawyer, if u can deal with his evil personality, getting made feel like u work for him, I got the feeling he counted the words he uttered to me, making sure not to say more than i had paid him for, no wonder he is single, and I feel sorry for the chick that works for him, probably his daughter.

All Glenna wanted was more money. She stretched out my amicable divorce out for two years. Every time I called her office to find out why everything was taking so long, I was charged and didn’t even speak to her. I felt like she used me. I ended up changing attorneys. I couldn’t afford her anymore.

This lawyer is absolutely blind sighted. She never seemed to have my best interest at heart, instead, only hers. She robbed me of my money and advised me to do things that I should have known were not for the best. I will never recommend her to represent anyone in the Chattanooga area. All she wanted was for my case to continue on so that her pocket book could get more padded by the minute.

This is one of the worst attorneys ive ever met. My husband was in an accident five months ago. Mr. Teeter does not return phone calls to anyone. My hubby was injured in the accident and my hubby was not at fault in anyway. The guy who hit him was 100% at fault. Teeter wouldnt even return the at fault guys insurance companys phone calls. When it came well past time for him to write a demand letter for attempting to settle he or his wanna be lawyer secetary wouldnt get it done. I got irritated one day because i hadnt spiken to mr. Teeter since we hired him in august. I left a msg saying if i didnt hear from him we would have to fire him. So last week we got a letter from him quitting our case. But the reasons he gives makes it sound like our case wasnt valuable. He did send me a msg that al then he woulve taken 30% of that. In the end he wouldve been handing us a bill insteadd of a chev. Im going to see what the insurane company wants to offer b4 we hire another attorney. Then if the guys insurace i know just the atty i will he was going to ask for was medical bills plus half of that amount. Our case is worth nearly 30k. But he was only going to ask for appx. 7k.

Paid a $2,500 retainer for a divorce and next to nothing was done. He billed me within two weeks of paying the retainer, saying it had been used up AND that I owed HIM money for his additional time and expense. During that two weeks, he never called, emailed, or wrote me to let me know what was going on. He never filed anything in my case nor spoke with the other attorney to settle things outside of court. He stole my money! I had to pay another attorney a new retainer to get anything done. I finally got my divorce but wasted $2,500 in the process.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
