I hired Jennifer Sheldon for a complicated Guardianship & Conservatorship case in the Cheboygan County Probate Court on behalf of my father. She kept me informed every step of the way and answered my numerous questions. She has a thorough knowledge of her area of law. She has a rare combination of really caring and also patiently explained the court process to our family. We were also very happy with the outcome of our case due to her excellent work.

I recommended Jennifer to a friend of mine for a child custody case. I learned of her from my niece who had also had her as her lawyer in a child custody case. Jennifer knew what to do to get a successful ending to a very bad situation my friends grandson had been living in. Jennifer offered us advise when we were unable to pay for her services for a time. She did not have to do this but was so helpful at that time. We needed her guidance and direction. She became a friend as well as a very knowledgeable attorney. I can't thank her enough for how she treated us and for her insight in gaining a happy ending.

Ms. Sheldon was a wonderful change of pace for me in my court action. My previous attorney had taken part in establishing a common practice with-in the county courtroom and failed to inform me, he was good friend of the plaintiffs Mother, but let my bill roll up, knowing the entire time that primary custody would not be awarded when I lived more than 100 miles away, I fired him once I found out. Jennifer took over and was honest with me since day one. Many of us out here in the world can not afford to retain an attorney every time we need one. I hope that this service helps everyone. In my case I have kept Ms. Sheldon updated on my case since September 28, 2009. She responds and offers sound advise always. I respect and appreciate her completely.

My family has hired Ron on many occasions, each and every time he has exceeded all expectations. We've used him on criminal cases and had outcomes we could not have imagined. We've also hired him for a custody battle as well as an adoption. During difficult times Ron is the voice of reason, telling us not what we want to hear but what we need to hear! We always have walked in stressed to the max, feeling the weight of the world on our shoulders. Yet when we walk out, have the immediate feeling that he has taken all of that weight and worry on to his own. He has good standing relationships with it seems everyone in the county building. Watching him in action is like watching a boxing match, the opponent throws punches as Ron blocks each and every one. Ending the round with a knockout everytime! If your in any kind of legal situation give him a call, I'm confident you end the conversation feeling better and positive that he is the fighter you want on your side.

Was falsely accused of felony domestic in an impossible situation where the truth seemed to elude everyone but myself, the man above and this attorneys brilliant intellect, insight and his extreme passion for the truth and what is real. The prosecutor in this case was also very ethical, smart and good at his job and did not resort to intimidation tactics. During the trial the prosecutor would make very strong legal and evidentiary statements, but Mr. Varga turned almost every one of them around to reveal the truth. I was shocked every time as it was as though he were there, with me at the time of alleged incident. I don't know if it is his experience, innate ability to read people and situations, or his raw intellect in combination with these qualities but Mr. Varga exudes gravitas and confidence. At closing statements the prosecutor asked the jury who should we believe, police officers and an alleged victim who have no reason to lie, or a defendant who has every reason to lie? Is it possible, yes, but probable absolutely not. I must admit at that point you could feel the juries mental cogs jostle and settle confirmedly into place with a decision then and there. And understandably so, as the closing statement made perfect sense had I not known the truth. But Mr. Varga had yet to speak and by now I had come to expect a logical and lucid revelation of reality to proceed from his ability to encompass the forest. And when he had finished his closing it was as all of our world views and frames of reference were challenged, rearranged and kindly put in correct order. It was palpable in the court room and maybe a little embarrassing to be convinced so strongly one way and then to be overwhelmed by a superior logic that requires one to completely revamp your thinking process. We all like to think our reasoning powers are fairly correct. But it was certain that many cogs had to be restarted and although I was relieved at this, it was humbling and educational to be a witness and benefactor of this outstanding human beings obvious genius level abilities. I felt like we were all taken to school and it was refreshing and appreciated by everyone. I can think of no one I would rather have at my side entering a courtroom in any circumstances or on either side. Words cannot do justice and there is not enough space to fully explain to give proper credit to Mr. Varga. He is down to earth and does not play. He would say he is just doing his job. If you are upfront, give him the honest facts and remain honorable, you have procured the best attorney possible!

If you want to be lied to and told that you WILL win this is not your man. BUT if you want someone that is going to tell it like it is good or bad, then he's your man. After reviewing my case I was informed that it most likely be a waste of money but if i wanted to he was willing to try. Stephen went in to the court room and gave it his all. Weeks later i recieved a call from him stating that I had won my case. I will NEVER be able to thank this man enough. My child and I are very greatful for the energy and time that he put in.

Mr. Loznak has helped immensley on several issues and is highly appreciated and approachable! He has assisted on several issues including contract law, trusts and business. When I was unsure what to do, this distinguished and high end attorney was quickly able to show me the right and ethical direction to go. I once had a piece of office equipment sent to me marked as "paid" from a company that was giving away "free" computers by a drawing for just calling and asking questions. Was not interested in a free computer and inquired of this company to purchase a better system with a printer - scanner - fax. Two weeks after speaking to a sales representative briefly about the computers they offer, a low end CPU (with no all in one printer) was on my door step marked as "Paid in Full". I did not purchase this computer and while it was a step up from the one I had, it was basically useless as it had no printing ability. This was when Mini-towers cost several thousand dollars and basic printers were three to five hundred. I could only think I won the contest. I heard nothing from the company for nine months - when they wanted over two thousands dollars from me. I felt tricked, taken for granted and advantage of until I spoke with Mr. Loznak. He reviewed the facts, advised me on some commercial laws and ultimately said "look at it this way, you got a good computer so pay for what you got. Buy a printer as soon as you can afford one". This is one example and may sound simplistic but Mr. Loznak, acting as an effective counselor set me straight and I was able then to not feel taken advantage of or tricked, got the manufacturer to subtract the price of a printer from the cost of the CPU and everyone was happy in the end. In the beginning having to pay for an incomplete setup was preventing me from affording what I needed to complete an office. There are of coarse more facts to this and other issues I have had the privilege to work with Mr. Loznak on, and the result is always the same. A clear and precise path to take to a desired end where everybody wins. Thank You to no end Mr. Loznak!

Brad reviewed all documents forwarded from my prior attorney’s office in NYS and drafted new documents pertinent to Michigan laws. Reviewed same with me and had them notarized with copies for my files. Brad was very thorough with answers and explanations. Very personable, convenient office location. Would highly recommend to others!

Go with the court appointed. They are cheaper and will get the same results if not better. Luke will tell you what you want to hear, not reality. When your in a serious situation this is not the guy you want on your side.

I hired Daniel M. on a high conflict divorce (are there any others?). After retainer I felt he was representing correctly but after a few times in court, he didnt stood up for what my needs were. I felt he was just trying to be good to the judge instead of presenting the facts and what was the right thing to do. I felt he wanted to avoid conflict at all costs including my case. I ended up switching lawyers. I asked for my money and never saw any in returned. Divorce are difficult already, your attorney should help you to get divorce with the minimum damage as possible. I ended up spending close to $25k in attorney fees. Be smart and make sure you hire the right now from the first time.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
