They took their part of my back pay for payment once I got approved for disability. They told me not to call social security when I started calling asking about the rest of my back pay. When the lawyers stopped answering my calls and weren't returning messages, I called social security to find out they paid the lawyer double and have been waiting on them to send it back so they could pay me. They haven't sent it back and they blocked my number on their cell phones. I can't believe the people I trusted are trying to take advantage of me and my situation.

When we started trying to get pregnant we had Dara draw up a contract. Everything seemed fine. A few weeks before the due date, we attempted to contact Dara to begin the process for my wife adopting our children. Dara was nowhere to be found. We tried calling, emailing and even stopped by her office for at least a month with no response. When she finally contacted us she told us she had been out of town for a death of a family member. We met with her and had everything ready to go. She promised she was turning everything in the next day and she would update us weekly. Almost a month passed with no word. Once again we emailed and called with no response. After weeks she called and pretended like nothing had happened and proceeded to tell us a signature had been overlooked so nothing was even processed. At that point we decided she would no longer be our lawyer. She gave us our file and our money back. My wife easily could have adopted our kids by the time they were 6 months but because of her we were starting all over at that point. Please save yourself the trouble and do NOT use her. She lacks professionalism and is unreliable.

I really believed Dara would represent my modification and custody case well. However, I can never get in contact with her to get an update or idea of where my case stands. She let a service deadline expire without having the other party served. I have paid her and yet I still have had to physically go to her her office and sit and wait for her to come out in order to make contact with her as she refuse to return any of my calls and emails. I have wasted time, energy and money in a case that I will now have to completely re start and re pay another attorney. I have literally begged her to call or email me back. I never in a million years would think an educated professional would behave in such a manner.

There is yet another case of this lawyer not responding to calls, not returning calls and not being trustworthy. Our daughter has had to acquire the services of another lawyer after months of delays due to this lawyer not returning calls. To be fair, the case was done but the ex husband was totally non responsive and has failed to act on any of the court orders. To follow up and get resolve has been impossible as this attorney has refused to reply to any calls - even after the Missouri Bar has been involved. Whatever Dara Strickland has been doing, she has no interest in her law-firm at this point. Do not use her.

BEWARE!!! This attorney pursued me for months via Facebook. I stated I had hired an attorney, yet he continued. It's a very emotional family case and he promised to do much more than the current attorney. He convinced me to fire my current attorney, that he would retrieve my case file, and the money from the attorney if I hired him. Completely took advantage of me and baited me. He told me to come talk to him in his office...free consultation. Now stated weeks ago that he is charging me for 6 hours, which was not over 3 total...and that was only two meetings that he requested for me to come talk to him in person instead of messaging. This was prior to hiring him...I was not sure if I wanted to fire my attorney and hire him...he stated he wouldnt know what he could do unless he got the case file. He convinced me to sign his paperwork and give him the retainer before he could get the file...and agreed he would return retainer if I decided to settle out of court. I had not been able to even look at my case file! This attorney disappeared since receiving the retainer, refuses to return my case file--holding it hostage and also will not return my retainer. The only thing I authorized for him to do (which he agreed) was get the case file and we would meet again to discuss what were my options. Which he became completely unavailable...then fired me!! This was weeks ago...still will not return case file or retainer or messages. BEWARE. I certainly hope the bar association can help me and any others before this attorney does this to anyone else. Still waiting for the process.

Zero stars is a true rating. Total lack of honesty and any form of integrity. Tom constantly lied to me and failed to file mandatory and requested documents to stretch my case out. He is incompetent as a family lawyer and unethical to the tenth degree and anyone wanting a family lawyer should never consider Tom Rolwing. Tom if you are reading this I'm demanding my $$k back immediately.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
