George has been my attorney for 25+ years. He fought hard for my benefits against Worker's Compensation. He won my case every time and kept me informed at all times. My Doctors, pharmacists and all who have been with me through all my cases, have the deepest respect for George. I know that anytime I call the office, his staff is helpful and George returns my calls as soon as possible. I would and have recommended him to many people. To have George in your corner is the best move a person could make. I would trust him with any and all aspects concerning the law.

Mr. Buckley handled my complex corporate matter in an expeditious and professional manner, while explaining any potential potholes along the way. I felt I was in very good hands, and he produced a result which was better than I ultimately wanted! Definitely recommend and thank you Mr. Buckley.

There is nothing more important than a competent lawyer. In William Pilger, Esq. I found an extremely competent attorney. I have recommended his practice twice since last requiring his services and, should I need an attorney with his expertise again, he would be the attorney of choice. The respect shown to him by his professional colleagues, the outstanding support of his firm left a lasting positive impression.

How to find the right audit rep? Do you ask other lawyers for recommendations, do you go by how well known a firm is, etc? Just like the best restaurant usually isn’t the one with the fanciest exterior or the most advertising, but rather the hidden gem where the team has the right experience, focus, commitment and caring, Lynn Boak Law is an outstanding tax law firm that is a real find. Lynn Boak Laws’ expertise and ability is second to none. We highly recommend the Lynn Boak Law firm for its unique combination of extensive experience working with the IRS, strong knowledge base and practical skill-set, client-friendly approach and commitment to making the time and focus to providing the best representation. Lynn Boak Law did a great job and was a pleasure to work with.

I have used Travis for multiple reasons in both my business and my personal life. I have had a lot of success with Travis and because of this I have sent him many referrals. I have never seen this man lose a case and I know personally over 15 cases (I referred) that he has gained a favorable decision for his client.

I have known Drake for nearly 30 years. He has what I consider the hardest combination of legal skills - attention to and understanding of details and a solid understanding and appreciation of the business ramifications of his work and the skills he brings to bear. He had shown repeatedly his tenacity in pursuit of a client's interests and special talents essential to a litigator. Drake is an excellent speaker who can make understandable even the most complex legal principles (a skill so very valuable in court as well) and also an excellent writer able to communicate effectively for his clients' causes. He also "sees around the corners", anticipating the client's needs, sometimes even before the client itself realizes the need. It is also worth noting that, although his forte is in oil and gas, it is not a limitation on his civil litigation skills, which he has applied successfully in many other legal areas. These are all general observations, but he has been successful in advising us in general business matters, including protracted litigation. He has been a welcome legal advisor, something I wish I could say for other lawyers we've had represent us.

Ms. Good was very attentive and proactive in our case. She explained things carefully and clearly. She laid out her plan to resolve the case and always made sure I was aware of how things were progressing. She and her excellent staff were diligent about getting all filings to me and explaining them, since I had never traversed these waters before. I feel that Ms. Good and her team are extremely competent and cognizant and gave me the best, most prudent and effective council to work toward the resolution of our legal issue.

I can't say enough good things about Abby Fournier and Linda Steiner. This is the first time I've had to hire an attorney. Abby was amazing, from the first phone call til my case was settled. Extremely professional, prompt, helpful and empathetic to my situation. She was up against a very unprofessional, unethical attorney, and Abby rocked it. I always had complete confidence & trust in her, and Linda was a great teammate with her. Their billing was very fair. I recommend them w/out hesitation.

Bernard "Bern" Haggerty is a warm, intelligent human being. He handled my domestic violence case. When I think about the person I am now compared to the person I was then it truly is the difference between night and day. I felt "broken" when a friend recommended Bern. It was me and my children living in fear and I felt stuck. How do I heal? What is best for my children? He treated me with respect and when discussing the case Bern was clear about explaining the law to me. I now have custody of my children and we no longer live in fear. Instead of me and my family ending up as another sad statistic, I have been a college instructor for five years, and my children are doing very well and are successful in school. In many ways, I owe this to Bern because he treated me decently when I was down and hurting. Through his example of being a good person, a good man and a wonderful lawyer we had a second chance at life.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
