After I was involved in a car accident, I was dealing with the insurance company of the responsible driver for months and getting nowhere fast. I hired Bryce Hensley to represent me and, in a matter of weeks, he was able to negotiate a settlement for me that was FAR beyond my expectations. Regardless of the time of day, he was always available to take my calls and answer any questions I had. I would highly recommend Bryce to anyone searching for an attorney.

Ulana has excellent character and goes above and beyond the call of duty. After we closed on our refinance she continued to follow up with us and Cook County to make sure that our new deed was recorded correctly. Cook County often does a poor job doing this and if she had not corrected them; our deed would have been screwed up. When you call her she will get back to you in less the 24 hours. She takes time to explain the process and has never rushed us on the phone. Also she charges very reasonable rates and is extremely detail oriented. Above all of this, she is just a very nice person who is well versed in real-estate law. I had another issue that she felt she would not be the best person for the job and she referred me to another lawyer who was excellent. She didn't even charge me a referral fee. I would strongly recommend her.

He has driven from Chicago to Woodstock to represented us in court. He has talked to the Judge to help the situation go favorable because of clear past legal history. He kept us informed every step of the way before and after court. His charges are fair and he has payment plans. We strongly recommend Mr. Groszek and staff.

I would like to recommend Kel'Ley. She helped me with my problems related to attempt by child support services to suspend my driving license. Problem was created by HFS which closed one account without checking if it should be closed. I was not properly informed that one account is according to HFS closed and was still sending money for both accounts. Case was initiated by Poland. HFS never responded to my questions why this one account was closed. Instead of simple letter informing me how payments should be made because of new situation HSF decided to suspend my driving license regardless payments were made every month without delay. I contacted office of Bennett & Bangser. Brad Bennett suggested Kel'Ley to help me with this case. She did excellent job contacting HFS and explaining entire problem. She also directed me how to solve the problem and checked if everything went smooth and as per her agreement with HSF . Thank You Kel'Ley !

The purchase or sale of a house is the largest financial contract most people make in their lives. It is wise to have an attorney review it to minimize the risk of unpleasant surprises. Since 1997, I dedicated my practice to do solely that, and help clients like you with your residential real estate transactions. You will benefit not only of my experience completing over 4,000 closings, but also that of four full-time assistants who have been working in this field for over 50 years combined. We are all fully bilingual in English and Spanish. Together we insure the timeliness, accuracy and respect our clients deserve. I am committed to give you the best service at a moderate price. Maria C. Cabrera, Attorney at Law P.S.: Previously, I also practiced Criminal and Municipal Law. Upon graduation from Law School, I became the first Hispanic female Assistant States Attorney in the State of Illinois. I rose as one of the First Chairs for Criminal trials in the First District of Cook County. I became member of the Federal Trial Bar and represented Cook County employees in Federal Court. After more than 10 years, I retired to concentrate on raising my children. During that time I also worked with legal teams involved in the financing of the O’Hare Airport expansion.

Brittney was FANTASTIC. I was dealing with a horrible neighbor in our condo building while I was condo board president. Our board resigned because we didn’t want to deal with the neighbor and he became president by default. Then he sued US for breach of fiduciary duty. It was a nightmare. Brittney was quick to respond to my requests for information, provided research and explanations on things I didn’t understand and let me and my husband vent to her about our situation. Brittney was able to get the case dismissed quickly and made sure the lawsuit didn’t affect the sale of my condo unit. Thank you!!!

My husband was attacked by a dog and we needed to find a personal injury lawyer to represent us. I was referred to Brian from an acquaintance. At our initial meeting, he listened to our story, spoke with us about the potential case, educated us on the process and informed us of the future steps. He always took the time to keep us up to date on the status of our case. He was never too busy to take our call and always responded to our inquiries in a timely manner. When it came time to negotiate a settlement, he presented to us all of the options and possible scenarios. The settlement we received was much greater than we anticipated. We were extremely pleased with the end result and would definitely use his services again (if needed). I have referred him to friends and would recommend him as a great choice as a personal injury attorney.

Brianne represented me in a due process against my school district recently. I was most impressed with her kindness and compassion for her clients. Brianne always took the time to explain her position in my case to me every step of the way and always made me feel welcome to ask questions. She did a wonderful job in writing the legal documents in my case and was very knowledgeable of the laws. Once my hearing decision was issued, Brianne continues to watch over the implementation of it to ensure it is successful. I really owe her a great big thank you, Not just for winning my case for me, but for caring so much about me and my child as clients. Thanks Brianne!

Keith Fenceroy represented us on negotiations for a short sale as well as the purchase of our new home. I feel very lucky that my mortgage broker referred him to me as I am very satisfied with his service. He was responsive via computer and phone and kept me in the loop at all times. We had a complicated purchase with an awful seller and I still have no complaints about Keith. Highly Recommeded!

I have been a client of Ebony Lucas' in various capacities since 2009. I met her at a seminar that she was hosting for condo associations plagued by foreclosures. We talked a little after the seminar and I explained my situation to her. She was very knowledgeable about Real Estate and Condo Law and explained my options. I knew then that I needed to retain her to assist with my failing condo association. Soon after retaining Ebony we began seeing results (i.e. recouping delinquent association dues). After all of our units went into foreclosure we were able to recoup funds owed to the association and were able to make much needed improvements to the building and have some in reserve. The developers that purchased the foreclosures in our unit were so impressed at how she handled our association that they then retained her to handle all of their properties as well. I have never had an issue contacting Ebony whether it be via email or telephone. She always responds promptly to my questions. Her rates are very reasonable and fair and her billing procedures are standard. My mother most recently used her to help with a business lawsuit and Ebony represented her and WON! I have most recently retained her for legal advice for my business and am very confident in her abilities to give me great advice. Ebony is hands down the best real estate and condo lawyer that I have seen!

I strongly recommend Staci Balbirer to anyone looking for a family law attorney. I cant say enough positive things about Staci and only wish I had transferred my case to her earlier than I had. She handled my post dissolution of marriage case and I was very pleased with the results. She is understanding yet firm and to the point. She truly cares about her clients and it shows. She is sharp and very knowledgable. She doesnt miss a beat when negotiating with the opposing attorney, is detailed in her review of any documents and her writing skills are definitely worth mentioning. I felt at ease and comfortable with her handling my case and knew she was on top of everything at all times. In addition, she responds to emails and calls promptly and actually addresses any question you may have.

When I entered the process of purchasing my first home I didn't even know I needed an attorney. I asked a TON of questions, I was more than likely borderline obnoxious with the amount of questions I asked. Kevin was great! He answered every question I had, tracked down all of the documents needed and walked me through the closing documents one by one. If I buy in the Chicago area again, I will absolutely go with Kevin as my attorney again.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
