Olga is great! She kept me in the loop the entire time and was very easy to reach both by phone and email! She returned my emails and calls quickly, and answered all of my questions. Olga is thorough and professional. Mr. Robin and Ms. Stambler were successful in getting my case dismissed and I will always be grateful.

I cannot put into words what Justin McShane has done for us. My brother was pulled over and drugs and a stolen weapon were found in his car. At that point we were preparing for the worst. I called a couple lawyers in the area and the first one to call me back (within 20 minutes) was Justin McShane. If you ask me Justin is a miracle worker. He proved that the police violated my brother’s rights by wrongfully stopping him. The prosecutor had been pushing for 2 years in prison but my brother was saved. Thanks Justin. You will definitely get referrals from us. Dwight

Best lawyer ever plain and simple. The fact that he hasn't been approached to be the Attorney General of our country is ludicrous. Hire this man he is as good as it gets.

Michelle and Kathleen helped us update our living will and worked attentively, and patiently, with us to ensure that all of our questions and concerns were addressed within our legal document. We had a lot of back and forth conversation in which they were incredibly helpful in allowing us to fully understand the legal ramifications of each choice we were making with the structuring of our will. At the same time, they are incredibly professional and I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Graham has been an invaluable resource not only for my business, but also for my sanity. He's professional, concise, and incredibly sharp. Graham represented me for my home purchase and has also advised me on landlord/tenant law. As a first time homeowner and landlord, it's been a really challenging and oftentimes stressful experience, but Graham's legal counsel and guidance has been invaluable and has been crucial in my decision making for my business.

I cannot even begin to describe how satisfied I was by the service I received from this attorney. Having been in business for years, I have worked with some knowledgeable attorneys in the past, but none has the additional attributes that this attorney possesses. Not only was she extremely knowledgeable and thorough, but she communicated with me throughout my entire ordeal, explaining my position as it related to the law. This was a situation where I had been laid off from a highly lucrative position, and had a very strict non-compete in place. Other employment agreements had also been in place that were not in my favor. Needless to say, I was extremely concerned about my future. However, Ms. Gorgei ensured that I was never in the dark as to my situation, even returning my after hours phone calls. I am also VERY happy with the results that she got for me.

High praise for attorneys is rare- but John Kobus Jr. stands apart from the Chicago Legal community in many meaningful ways. I have had the pleasure of working with John for the past two years, and during that time he has taken whatever real estate challenges are thrown at him, and handles the matters efficiently, effectively and promptly. This wouldn’t be a true review unless I mentioned his one of a kind sense of humor, and his ability to make me laugh and make light of even of the toughest of situations. John’s strong work ethic, knowledge of real estate law, and personality make it an easy decision to come back to Burke, Warren, MacKay & Serritella, P.C. for our leasing real estate legal needs.

Ben Schneider was a very calm and trustworthy person. He heard our situation and put up with our insecurity. We never wanted to file for bankruptcy but we had no other choice. Yet, we try to delay our desition in the hope that we could balance our financial situation. When we realize that we couldn't balance it, we spoke to Ben again, and he reasured us and guided us through the process. Then without realizing it was all over. Later there were other questions that he resolved quickly. We didn't even realized what and/or how everything happened. Up to now I still can't believe that is over. We are not sure what and how it happen but everytime we have a question or dubt We feel confortable calling him and asking him what to do. We have regained a peace of mind and we owe it to Ben Scneider.

Although, I don't agree with the "avvo" ratings for other attorneys I have worked with, I would have to agree with the "Avvo" rating 100% for Ian. He is extremely knowledgeable on immigration matters and gives prompt and accurate responses on consultations. I would recommend Ian any time.

Our case was very specific, Mr.Bernstein knows immigration law even better than the immigration officers making interviews for green card. Without his proffessional help, my son would have never been legalized, since the immigration officer did't know the specific law for a case like ours. Thank you so very much, Mr.Bernstein.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
