Ben Turner is without a doubt the attorney you want in your corner if you find yourself facing legal issues in Johnson County. His office, including his staff, was extremely professional during this daunting experience. Mr. Turner and his legal assistant Jackie were both straight shooters, always straight up and consistent in their efforts to defend me in a serious matter, ultimately resulting in a successful disposition that gave my life back- with my career, employment and record intact. Mr. Turner stayed on top of my case every step of the way and was able to resolve a serious charge to our complete satisfaction and utter relief. He went above and beyond to fight for me; he let me know what was expected of me, and took the time to review my entire history, which I truly appreciated, especially when he acknowledged my efforts to comply with the court orders, using any and all positive facts to negotiate the outcome we prayed for.. he didn’t brush through the personal details as some attorneys are known to do. Mr. Turner was keen, sharp, clearly wanting to be fully informed and using everything he could to present my case in the best light- a true advocate, skilled at building the best legal case. I would recommend Ben to anyone whether it’s a low misdemeanor or a serious felony. He is a highly intelligent, attentive attorney with upstanding character- always honest and genuine; it became apparent to me that he truly cares about his clients. He is also highly respected by those that matter (court personnel and other attorneys), evident in his interactions and how he was received in court hearings. I can not thank him enough for advocating for me as he did; he came through and gave me the gift of my life back. Thank you Mr. Turner and Jackie for your grace, support, and for the exceptional representation and service.

Ben was recommended to me by a friend who had decent luck with him while facing drug charges. I thought “I don’t know any lasers and this one was recommended. I’ll call him up!” Ben was informed that my case was serious and I had people who were trying to make things worse for my case. He didn’t care, meanwhile, they were talking to the Assistant DA in Hill County and making things worse for my case. He never showed me a lick of evidence and he basically told me to sign a plea deal based on no other information. Good kid, never been in trouble. Trusted this lazy lawyer with abandon (he REALLY started slacking after we realized that we had already paid him in full). Don’t go to him for legal especially not in Hill County. He is not known or respected there and looks like a lost puppy in the court.

Shelly likes money. And vacations. She was never in her office during business hours, never returned calls or emails. I was always kept outt of the loop. Save your money and choose someone else. She could care less about parents seeing their kids or kids being neglected. All she cares about is her precious down time (which seems to be business hours) and all of her money!

My Mother passed away and I needed to find an attorney I could trust and feel comfortable with. After talking to several local friends and business associates Burton was highly recommended. I also needed someone that could work with me for I live 5 hours away from Cleburne. I hired Burton and from the start He was very thorough and patient in explaining every segment I would encounter. During the process we encountered several problems with an problem relative who went out of their way to create issues. Burton went out of His way to assist me in overcoming every obstacle in this situation. It has always been very important to me that someone I am doing business with gets back to me in a timely manner and no matter what day it was Burton always got back to me right away on any questions I had. If you are looking for an 'out of the box' attorney who works for you and respects you as a client should feel then Burton Baker is your guy. I highly recommend Burton

Highly recommend Willard Burton Baker, Jr . He did a great deal of work for me and also for my sister ... both of us were very pleased. Work was done in a timely fashion; phone calls and text messages were returned the same or next day; met me at courthouse or his office at the time we had arranged. Office staff are knowledgeable and polite. Atmosphere in office is relaxed ... clean, professional. Again, highly recommend Willard Burton Baker Jr

In 2013 I used this "lawyer" for my divorce, neither party had an affair or any other such circumstances. What I come to find out in the last 7 years is that in the state of TX it should had been a 50-50 split with all finances. I also since learned that my husband never gave me any of his pension or retirement money or any of his investments that he had. I had to beg this attorney to serve the divorce papers to my ex husband because he was violent! He, Curtis Pritchard, did not wanted to do it!! He was fast to charge me $5 thousand dollars for doing the minimum amount of effort. Don't let it happen to you too. Make sure your attorney does all the background work like checking into retirement money and investments or other out of state accounts.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
