I have now required the assistance of an attorney for a third time this year. Mr Hinson is the first name I call. His complete knowledge of the law surpasses my (already high) expectations- and his success in getting the fair outcomes has been superb. I'd recommend anyone seeking legal advice from a thoughtful, intelligent, and respectful individual to contact Mr Hinson

David Hinson is the most awesome attorney that anyone would need in family law! He is very calm, cool and collective. He also is very informative and takes his time to make sure that things are done in an orderly way. Thinks before he reacts. That is a true gift that is very rare in this fast and high tech world that we live in today! My hat goes off to him due to the fact he really took 90% of the worrying of of my shoulders and just handled my situation with the upmost care and concern. He was always calm cool and collective. I would absolutely recommend him for any legal matter at all! He is a true gentleman and very personable man with great wisdom. A++

I recently was in a car wreck, and I was ticketed as the one at fault. As this was my first wreck, I was more than a little distraught. Mr. Hinson was very supportive, and he explained everything so that I could understand it. He handled everything very smoothly, and was able to get the charges dismissed. I have used several lawyers over the years for minor traffic matters, divorces, and wills, with varying degrees of satisfaction. In my experience, Mr. Hinson is the most personable, caring, and professional attorney I have ever consulted. I will definitely recommend him to my friends and family members.

I had no idea where to begin, a part from the emotions and having no clue. I am so glad we had Trip Payne as our attorney. It was not an easy journey, but he communicated with me the entire way, was upfront the entire time, a lawyer of law and sticks to the law, didn't allow our emotions to take over. Definitely recommend for anyone for estate, estate planning, wills, etc. 100%

Mr Lane litigated a case in Forsyth Superior Court involving 4 plaintiffs who required ingress and egress to their properties. He worked both professionally and personally to prepare plaintiffs, witnesses and historical evidence to support the plaintiffs' claim before a jury of twelve. Understandably, plaintiffs were emotional and anxious during preparation and litigation of this matter, but Mr Lane's calm demeanor, personal investment, attitude, exhaustive research and presentation served to allay anxieties and, ultimately, provided a positive verdict. We are very happy to have chosen his services.

I love, love this lawyer! I was injured in an accident that involved me getting hit by a car. Ms. Tuch was the only attorney who took my case on. Others didn't want to handle my case due to the stupid (and again I say..STUPID) NC Contributory negligence laws. They apparently doubted themselves because they figured it wasn't a case worth taking on. They didn't want to fight the uphill battle; Ms. Tuch did! She believed in me and my case. Ms. Tuch was able to convince the driver's attorney and insurance company to settle out of court. I would recommend her to anyone and would definitely use her again.

This lawyer wrote the will for a family member and then probated it upon death. Did not follow through with putting all deeds in names of those to which land was willed but to Heirs. Had asked him previously to fix the problem and he replied that he could for about $200. This should have been done initially in settling the estate. As a result of a sale of property this year, a survey has been uncovered that does not follow the instructions in the will. There was no survey in the papers filed as part of the final estate. As executor, I was told by the family member that a line was drawn on the property map by Larry Callahan, surveyor. When the property was sold it would need to be surveyed according to the will instructions. I talked with Allied Surveying, who established the surveying corners for the sale, and found the surveyor who did the work in 1983 but was refused a copy even if I paid for it. Was told by Forsyth County Officials that survey was not what the will stated and that I needed a lawyer. Went to see Ed Brewer and he could not remember anything but referred me to County records for the file. It turns out that a check was issued from the estate funds to pay for the survey but it did not indicate it was for a survey and was issued to a generic name of the company which would never be suspected of being a survey company. A builder has bought the property and had no knowledge of this problem. I was the heir who signed off on the estate checks and paperwork and had no idea a survey was done within days of the death. Ed Brewer refuses to get involved and does not remember anything. I found this site while trying to find an attorney to help me straighten out this problem as a result of Ed Brewer's initial work writing the will and then probating it.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
