My family used Susan Hutchinson for will preparations for my parents. After my parents passed away, my brother again hired her to take care of my mother’s estate ( my father had already passed away). Mrs. Hutchinson divided our family within 5minutes of meeting with her. The division was beneficial to her pocket book!! She never provided transparency to our family/heirs regarding any billing even though I asked profusely. The cost to take care of my mother’s home and two vehicles was around 20K. This is outrageous for such simple transactions. So , if you are looking for an estate lawyer to divide your family, cost you a fortune, and leave you without transparency for the costs, Hutchinson is your lady!!

Excellent compassionate lawyer who will fight tooth and nail for his clients. Child support owed to me was in arrears for 31 yrs. While my ex dragged it out Mr. Condit was there for me 100% and we won. Thanks Brad.

Be very careful when dealing with attorney! Do not enter into any agreements with him verbal or written unless you are 100%. You do not want to be sued. Search his past court cases. Do research! If he does your probate planning be 100% certain he files your will, DOUBLE CHECK! If you sign anything from him or deal with him court DOUBLE READ everything! You dont want to be victim to a play on words. Everyone just be careful and watch out, may victimize people, if he feels he can gain more money. Does not have a good repuation in the Nueces Courts. Never trust this guy and never let your guard down with such a caniving attorney. Gives attorneys a bad name. Its sad DISCLOSURE: All statements are made are based on personal experiences and are based on my own opinion. Not intended to persuade anyone from using listed attorney's services. Readers are advised to make their own decisions based on their own situations.

When I came to him with my case, which was a complete mess, he cleared everything that was in my case that was wrong. Different state had jurisdiction..ect. He helped me get my son back where he belongs. He made everything that went wrong, right, and for that my family and I are eternally grateful. He is a very caring, attentive, trustworthy lawyer and I recommend him to everyone I know!

Jeff has represented me on two separate occasions. He was very professional and hard working. I was very impressed with his dedication to my case and his habit of keeping me up to date on everything during my divorce. When the need arrived for me to need an attorney again, I already knew who to call. This is a man to walk the river with...

Paid for consultation. Spoke highly of himself and insured his skills to help win a positive outcome on our case. Once hired requested 5000.00 up front. He said a portion would be refunded if the case did not go after full custody. Once hired he only texted back. Failed to call back and when he did he was rushing and rude. He often lost his temper while speaking. He showed up to court both times late and under dressed and wrinkled. He did not speak up for his client. He allowed miscommunication on our case. Aka let the other attorney and party make all recommendations and decisions. Never spoke up. All he did was agree to whatever they demanded. He failed to keep us posted. He never sent us any temporary orders. I had to look them up myself. When asked status of case he would deny any changes. I would then send him screenshots of updates I found in portals. He would lose his temper and say he wanted to quit our case after being questioned why he was putting out case on back burner. Never got any refunds back and we did not win and we never went back to court. We never got final decision signed by Judge. He stiffed us of our time, efforts and money.

Jeff helped me during the difficult time of a divorce after a 27 year marriage. His wonderful advice and excellent manner along with sound legal advice allowed for me to make the best of a very difficult situation. I have and will continue to refer family and friends to Jeff for all their family and business legal advice. In addition to helping me with my divorce, Jeff has assisted me with my business legal matters and once again, his professional manner and legal aptitude was exceptional!

Since I never met this attorney in person, I can only assume this is the correct attorney that was assigned to me by the Alex R. Hernandez, Jr. Law Firm since there are no other attorneys named John Lamerson listed in Avvo currently working in San Antonio, TX. First, if you need real estate assistance, DO NOT use the Alex R. Hernandez, Jr. Law Firm since customer service or prompt communication is not their first priority AFTER you hire them. They were very prompt to call me back when trying to get my business but once I signed the paperwork to hire them for help with real estate issues, they never asked to meet me in person to discuss my situation in detail. Mr. Lamerson was always in a car when I spoke to him for only a few minutes and seemed like he was in a rush during our very short conversations so I never felt comfortable he was giving me 100% in representing me. All my interaction with this attorney regarding my case was either by email or phone calls which I had to initiate in order to get a status of my case. I was prompt in sending him whatever information he needed but he was never prompt to respond to any of my emails or call me back after I left a message with his office. He never sent me the documents he promised regarding my case and eventually told me after several months that he did not get any responses from the banks and he was overwhelmed with work and needed to have my case assigned to another attorney. Forget the fact, that his firm charged me almost $1,000 for very minimal work. It was clear I was not a priority. I read a previous review regarding Mr. Lamerson regarding how he did tell his client he moved from Corpus Christi to San Antonio. That about sums up the experience you will get if you hire or are assigned this attorney. I rarely write a formal review about anything or anyone but I cannot stand by when attorneys think they can take advantage of people by promising them help, collecting their money, but not delivering on their promise to fight for their clients and show some level of customer service. Absolutely terrible experience!

Mr. Lamerson was very helpful in assisting me in recovering money owed to me from a rental agreement. I found him to be very professional, responding to every email and phone call within hours, sometimes minutes. I highly recommend this attorney.

First of all, Mr. Lucas can not refrain from yelling and cursing at his clients, paralegal and answers his phone calls in front of clients while cursing at the top of his lungs and pounding his fist on his desk. He does not do what is simply in his job description. He lost records pertaining to my case, showed late for court, was verbally reprimanded by judge for not being prepared and having wrong case file. During the trial Mr. Lucas objects to nothing, he just sits there.

Mr. Leahey represented me in Brown County, Texas, before he abandoned his obligation to me to prepare an effective, non frivolous appeal, when he left Texas for Hawaii. While he did perfect my appeal in a timely manner it was wholly frivolous and Mr. Leahey is currently under review by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals for ineffective assistance of counsel in his misrepresentation in my case. Beware of Mr. Leahey as he is patently unreliable.

I hired abel cavada as my divorce attorney many years ago. I married a new woman. We unfortunately divorced in 2005. This time abel cavada represented HER in court. Apparently this was not a conflict of interest nor was it illegal. I still felt betrayed and insulted. I will never trust this attorney again and i recommend no one else should either.

When may paper work was wrong he told me to change the day to the correct day but I would not change it nor would he. I have called him more than a few times trying to get my paperwork fixed with out a response from him. He has no intent of helping me. So much for the court appointed Lawyer. He has far been the worst attorney I have ever meet. And did not care about me or my case or what it could do to my future.

This individual was given twice the fee she asked for for a will. I did this because she had lost a partnership and other jobs and needed the help. She ate at our house once a month for years; my husband and I believed her to be a friend. She was asked about the completion of the will several times over the period of more than a year and she never did anything. We met with her twice more about the will and she still did not do the work she was paid for. Then when my husband died suddenly and very tragically, she dropped the case a month later. Please note she did this AFTER saying, in front of numerous people, including my doctor, that she would help with the paper work and issues resulting form my husband's death. Windel did incalculable damage to me, my relationship with my beloved in laws and my family. At one point, a mere week after my husband's death, I called Candace for a minor kind word as she had been a friend for close to a decade. I was told to "suck it up and get a grip". This was the professional feedback I received. This entire set of actions put me in the hospital and vastly deepened an already deep trauma. I would not rely on her for any legal work. From all I could see she did not know how to handle the work she was paid for and promised to do. A year later I asked for my money back. Candace responded that I did not pay her. After I produced a copy of the cancelled check, she took a month to send me the money when she knew I was in dire need of funds. I believe this "lawyer" to be void of ethics, delights in cruelty and is deeply self involved. And yes, I have written statements from those at the memorial who heard her say she would handle all legal work for free which resulted from my husband's suicide. Such work would not have been extensive. Further, she gave me devastatingly wrong legal advice about my husband's last paycheck. Fortunately I found people who did know what they were talking about who were not even lawyers. I and all who witnessed Windel's actions deeply detest her. I even had one lawyer offer to sue her; but at the time I did not have the meanness or strength to do or for a number of years after. Fee she is void of conscience; her witnessed actions more than prove it. View

I’m so glad I did not move forward in using his services as this guy constantly yells at people no matter who’s in the audience. It’s sad as this guy needs to be thankful for what God has given him. He definitely has anger issues. Word of advice to him…. Turn a new leaf and show appreciation for being alive as God is great! Smile!

I hired this lawyer, confined in him. Told him my whole story as to why we needed him and how much it meant to a lot of people he pleaded his case as to how perfect of a lawyer he was and everything he could do for us and he don't nothing.. We provided piles of paperwork and once he got in the court room he showed nothing, it's like he was nervous. He is not qualified what so ever and cannot handle himself infront of a judge. If you are trying to help a family member out or yourself do NOT hire this lawyer I'm telling you now. He's good a persuading you to think positive but that's the only thing he's good at.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
