I had the pleasure of working with Matthew Bell over the past 18 months, and I cannot recommend his services highly enough. From the start, Matthew's kindness, professionalism, and commitment to resolving my legal matters were evident. His focus on finding solutions rather than complicating the court process was a testament to his integrity and dedication. Matthew's responsiveness and the competence of his Paralegal team, including his wife Diana, were invaluable. Diana’s assistance was not only professional but also incredibly supportive throughout the entire process. Together, they navigated my case with the precision and care of true partners and advocates. Simply put, Matthew and Diana are good people who make a genuine difference in their clients' lives. If you're looking for legal representation marked by high integrity and exceptional competency, I wholeheartedly recommend Matthew Bell and his team. Their dedication and expertise are truly outstanding.

Matthew was a lifesaver in all senses of the word. He helped me keep afloat during one of the most difficult and stressful periods of my life. He's smart, savvy, kind and patient. He know what he's doing, and was on top of everything every step of the way. After my divorce was finalized, he offered to close out my account, but I asked if he could just keep it open and hold on to my retainer for a bit longer as my ex keeps doing stuff where it has been so helpful to be able to send Matthew a question or concern I have, and he has guided me each time. His competence made my ex's counsel look like it was their first day on the job. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Matthew. I will always be grateful, and always refer anyone who is in need of his services directly to him.

Danielle is an excellent lawyer. I worked with a few lawyers in my case before her and she was the best by far. She knows what she's doing. She knew exactly how to proceed in all of the crazy situations I had to deal with and was able to get the facts out in court, something my previous lawyers hadn't been able to do effectively. I can't recommend her enough.

I contacted Danielle after trying to navigate the divorce process on my own. My ex-wife and I were in agreement on most items through the divorce but I was still having trouble navigating the process through the state. After months of trying, and getting nowhere fast through the state program, I reached out to Danielle and she was awesome to work with. She’s very straightforward, efficient and smart. She knew the answers to all of my questions immediately and turned around documents very quickly. Her and her staff are top notch. We had our divorce final within a month or two from when we first contacted her which I helped both me and my ex move on from the situation in a positive manner. I would highly recommend her to anyone and everyone I know.

Danielle is such a knowledgeable and helpful lawyer. She helped to explain the process through every step of the way in a manner that was easy to understand. The confidence and pride she takes in her work was evident in the consultation meeting we first had before hiring her. With her guidance and knowledge of family law I was able to settle my case in mediation without the need of going to trial, and the outcome was fair and equitable for all involved. I have much gratitude for Danielle and her firm.

I worked with Caleb for five years over an equestrian accident case. No other lawyer was willing to “charter I chartered grounds” so to speak. With every obstacle the defenders attorney tried to present, Caleb would use past and new laws to counter. He was proactive in seeking an independent medical exam and did a thorough job of deposing and using expert witnesses. It was with Caleb’s persistence and support that I was able to get a fair settlement. I highly recommend him!

I was thrilled to have Jordan work on my expungement case. He always explained everything to me and put my mind at ease. I thought that his rates were very fair and I was very pleased with his level of commitment to me. He would call me and make sure that I was aware of where we were in the process. He gave me his personal number in case I had questions and he wasn't at the office. I never felt like I was alone in this confusing process. I'm very grateful to him.

As GC of a large corporation, I hired Stuart for a large sales transaction. Stuart represented the company brilliantly. There are perhaps 2 or 3 attorneys in the entire state, if not the country, with his expertise, experience, and creativity in putting together large transactions and getting deals done. He is a consummate problem solver and relentless when it comes to closing. You simply cannot hire a better transactions attorney in Utah.

I've had the pleasure to work with Matthew Bell when he worked for a different practice. So when I needed more legal help I sought him out specifically. I highly recommend him. He helps me understand what exactly is going on and what my options are. He is considerate of my unique needs. Maybe I have just been fortunate and I've never been "doomed" legally, But every time I've ever spoken to him I felt confident I would reach a good outcome. And I believe I always have.

I had a court case back in 2008 and Robert Miner represented me. Fast forward 11 years and the court had put a warrant out for me, saying I had not turned something in. It was so ridiculous. Even though so much time had passed and he was no longer representing me, he still was very responsive to my emails and phone calls, and assisted me pro bono in getting my case dismissed. Awesome lawyer that really cares, even 11 years later.

My mom was accused of 3 ridiculous charges and she was petrified she was going to go to jail for these charges for making a split second decision to smack our fence and two fence boards fell out. She panicked when she was told she needed to appear before a judge for criminal mischief and trespassing and animal cruelty, all of which were trumped up charges by some hotshot new cop. She called her divorce attorney Tom King who HIGHLY recommended Rob to her. She called the number and was so surprised/impressed that Rob himself answered the phone and she told him what happened and he immediately calmed her down. She met with him for her free consult and immediately hired him on the spot. He came to pick she and I up before every court appearance and talked us through everything and was upfront and honest. We were always in and out of every court appearance so quick. He got her 2 of her misdemeanors dropped and got her one down to probation for one year. He was great in calming my mom down and talking us through every step of the way so we have no surprises. I would recommend Rob to anyone with any criminal charge no matter how big or small. He was worth every dime that she paid him!

Even though Jim could not represent me for the case I was involved in, he sat with me and answered my (million) questions and helped me make sense of all the legal speak/terms/etc. People doing things out of the goodness of their heart to help someone they don’t even know is rare these days, but that’s exactly what Jim did for me today and I appreciated it more than he’ll ever know

I was referred to Harward through my employer's assistance program. I saw negative reviews, but calling Harward a criminal or saying a 10 year old could do better sounds like a bitter customer writing from the wrong place. Also, the assistance program referral was supposed to give me a decent discount (I can't prove $250 is decent, as I suspect their normal rate is $265. But either way, it's not lower than many other lawyers). So I continued, not knowing where else to turn. Jim counselled me to petition to modify my divorce decree because it was a mess. This was an exaggeration (he would later focus on just one thing), but I'm glad he talked me into fighting. Considering my financial situation, Jim agreed to a low retainer and a low monthly payment. We tried to arrange mediation, but after some back and forth, Jim determined it was not going to work and opted to go straight for the petition to modify. When Amy sent me the first draft of the petition, it was practically useless; fixing very little of the "mess". When I asked Jim about it, he said that crafting the petition was like sculpting a statue: start with a block and refine it through several rounds (or something like that). I now think it's more likely that Amy was given the task of writing the petition without being provided the information she needed. This happened again later with the drafting of our objection to an order to show cause. While working through the petition to modify with Amy, I often had to fix typos in and omissions from the legal document (one in particular was about my income and could have ruined the whole case). During one meeting I called with Jim, we discovered that the opposing party had filed an order to show cause against me. Why weren't they aware of this? Why hadn't they notified me? (This happened again when I called about something else and they informed me that a court date and mediation had been scheduled - I shouldn't have to call to find out.) We filed a counter order to show cause and I again felt that I was doing more of the work than I should have to. They provided the legal know-how, but I was the one providing the arguments and proofreading. Maybe I'm thinking of a different price bracket, but I think the lawyer should be doing that. With the counter order and petition in place, Jim felt that the commissioner would dismiss the case in favor of mediation. With this reassurance, I forgot about it until my calendar sent a reminder the day of the hearing. I called Harward to make sure it was off and they notified me that it was not. I needed to be there. At the hearing, Jim pulled me aside and asked if the other party had been calling the shots and I had been going along with it. It turns out this was to be his argument. In the hearing, Jim used his argument and said we just need to go to mediation. The commissioner sided with the opposing party based on an exaggerated claim that had nothing to do with the law (but at least they HAD an argument). So in that hearing, Jim and Commissioner Luhn both ignored the divorce decree and the counter order to show cause that Amy and I had worked so hard on. The counter was essentially a waste of time and money (though it shouldn't have been). Afterward, Jim tried to convince me that we got what we wanted. We would file an objection and take it to the judge after mediation. But he didn't tell me we only had 14 days to object and the commissioner's recommendation was a COURT ORDER until a judge overturns it. This was when I decided to end my relationship with Harward. I found that the other negative reviews were accurate. Jim's friendly and reassuring, but doesn't follow through. He exaggerates. He didn't fight for me in the hearing (despite the prep work we did). They didn't know/didn't tell me important information. Jim tries harder to work his clients than the legal system.

I hired Coby to protect my rights as a father when I filed for divorce. He did a fair enough job in that regard. I was rather impressed at the positive counseling he would give often. However when we got a new commissioner and a few complications came up Coby didn't have the courage to stand up for me and defend my side against the lies and such my ex was alleging. Because of this it resulted in lingering problems lasting several years after the divorce. I should've had the courage to stand up for myself since Coby wouldn't.

As said in the co- worker reviews she works "close" with opposing council as in "works with" as if she works for. As done nothing but given misinformation and only advice has been "why dont you talk to the judge" or "you should talk to DCFS about that".... Thats your job patty! I have been in the legal system for over 35 years and have delt with 20+ lawyers and i have never seen the amount of unprofessionalalism and been given as much bad advice and sujested to do such stupid things as patty keller has done. If you end up with her. Fire her asap or just give up. She no help only more problums ill add my info when this case is closed... This woman was assigned to us as a defense attorney in a DCFS case. Still ongoing. She at no time Respected my choices. At no point in the case did she defend me. She agreed with the production (DCFS) and the guardian adliem. At no time did I feel represented. In fact this wanna be big shot attorney was so busy kissing the other attorneys a**, that she actually went out of her way to make sure the or kids stayed in foster care as long as possible. When I voiced my opinion to her about my perspective on the matter I was treated with a "oh well, gee, I guess you should've known better" additude. Don't waste your money.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
