I worked with Mr. Hurt for 3-4 months about a 1-1/2 years ago. His analysis on particular fiscal and legislative policy was accurate and proved beneficial especially in the developmental stages of our contracts and legal research of municipal law. I thought he was well knowledgeable of the law, and this attorney was able to interpret it to me and others in our organization in common terms.

Mr. Nicholas J Bachand accomplished nothing besides draining our bank account in order to bring more money to the Lucido Law Firm. When I first met with him during the initial free consult he was very interested in explaining his fees than gathering details of my case. Right on the spot after about five minutes in the conversation he asked me If I wanted to pursue my case and charged me a $1500 retainer. After $1500, it was a $1000 then $500 and continuing on. He did not accomplish any positive changes in court but instead was very smart on canceling meetings and/or postponing hearings in order to charge more fees. After 2-3 trips to the court I realized that I chose the worst lawyer in that firm, and that he was so incompetent with no knowledge of the law. He also was giving confidential information to the opposite lawyer and when in court I was paying him to chat with the other lawyer or to be the referees assistant. We would agree on certain conditions and compromises in the case but when in court he would state another decision, leaving me clueless on what to say in front of judge/referee. He was rude, not available and a waste of money. I guess he only has the word "lawyer" on his diploma that he has in his pseudo office. His skills as a lawyer were horrible, he seemed like a messenger boy, an extremely expensive crappy one. I was keeping my promise and always paid him when I received his invoices (actually overpaid the amount owed-He would charge me to the stamp placed on the envelope REALLY??).I would receive communication and invoices of other clients (with all of their personal and case information: where is the PRIVACY LAW here); in his defense he would tell me that his secretary was guilty for those incidents. I then decided to take matters in my own hands due to his terrible attitude and laziness. I told him he was fired, and after my paid in full balance I ended up receiving more charges for hours never worked, but in his own sneaky and fraud ways he accomplished to find some forgotten charges. Unless you like squandering money and not getting any tangible results that you could have gotten for the price of Fake Lawyer, the ones you find on TV, I would NOT RECOMMEND him, EVER., not even to my worst enemy. He is horrible as a person and as a lawyer.

The lawyer we dealt with at this firm, Nicholas J Bachand, was a complete waste of a nearly a thousand dollars. He accomplished nothing but the draining our bank account. We were referred to him by the Macomb County Bar association, big mistake. Seems that they only give the name of somebody near you, not a recommendation. We could have easily made a better choice by picking somebody at random out of the phone book. When I first met with him during the initial free consult I thought he seemed like a real jerk. My wife said that is what we need. The problem is we thought he would be an jerk to person we were in a legal dispute with, not to us. Wrong again Bob. First thing he did was print up a Power of Attorney form letter, and charged us a $500 retainer for doing that. He claimed he had trouble getting in touch with the party we had a dispute with, again another load of baloney. I say this because once I decided to take matters into my own hands I had ZERO trouble getting in touch with them. He charged us for what he said was an attempt to negotiate a lower settlement. His negotiation amounted to "my client is willing pay this". That isn't a negotiation, that's being a messenger boy, an extremely expensive crappy one. He called after we cut contact with him because we decided to take matters in our own hands due to his terrible attitude and laziness. I told him he was fired, and lo and behold he charged us to fire him. Unless you like squandering money and not getting any tangible results that you could have gotten for the price of a Legal Zoom Legal Form Letter, I would hardily not recommend him, EVER. This is my opinion, I suggest you heed it.

Mrs. Kostovski appears to be nice and seasoned. We met and I agreed to pay her $150.00 for a Jail visit in Oakland County to see my son. Unfortunately, when she arrived my son was moved to MDOC. I contacted Susan and informed her I would give her $25.00 for gas as she did attempt to visit my son. I received $75.00 back from the $150.00. Mrs. Kostovski said she reviewed documents related to my sons case. This lack of integrity was the sole basis for not moving forward with hiring her. Had she stuck with her written agreement on her business card of $150.00 for a jail visit I being a reasonable person would have considered further compensation. I was very disappointed but allowed her to refund me $75.00 totally blind sided me.

I hired him for my case. I paid him five thousand dollars in advance and also paid for his flight and hotel expenses. After getting the money he emailed me one day and said that nothing can be done for my case. Without even filing it he said it got refused and didn’t give me my money back.initially he said he will get my case approved. He just took the money and did nothing. So I would recommend everybody to stay away from him.

I hired Ronald Walker when my father was detained by immigration. He was very reassuring and branded himself extremely well. We hired him to help us get our father out of jail and represent him in immigration court. My father was deported very quickly and never went to court. Mr. Walker kept the $5,000 we paid him upfront because he visited my father once and spoke to Border Patrol and ICE ONCE! We were taken advantage of at a vulnerable time by a very unethical and dishonest person! I wish I would’ve done more research! The only thing Mr. Walker did was sent a request to ICE to release him where he misspelled my father’s name 4 times and our last name 6 times. This clearly indicated he is extremely careless! I certain the fees are excessive and down right unethical! Save yourself the heartache and pain of being lied to in your time of need!

My wife and I had a consultation with Mr. Walker and then we did hire him to work on our case. He informed us what we had to do and about the steps we had to take to fix our problem. We decided to do the first step with him. He told us how much it cost, but would never tell us how much the other steps would be. He kept saying "Let's just focus on this first step and if it gets approved, we'll talk about the next." We would've liked to know estimates of how much money we were looking at. The travel distance and money were an issue so we didn't continue with him. We did get an approval letter from Immigration about the first step he worked on. We noticed there was a mistake on the letter. The mistake was made either by him or Immigration. I called him up to see if he could make a phone call to immigration to find out if they made the mistake or if he did. He said, "Why would I further expand my work with you if you got a new attorney?" It's not further expanding his work with us. It's fixing a mistake that was made when he worked on our case that we already paid for. It's one phone call to see where the error was made. We already paid for the first step to get done right. We did get a new attorney closer to home, but Mr. Walker won't fix it for us because we aren't paying him anymore.

After hiring this man it was nearly impossible to get in touch with him. His assistant is rude and will offer to set you up with a phone appointment that may or may not take place. During the time he represented me he failed to provide the Social Security Administration with a great deal of my medical information which led to a denial for benefits. After meeting with him in person and supplying him with a plethora of medical records that directly conflicted with the Administrative Law Judges decision only a fraction of that info was sent to the S.S.A. and I was denied for the third time. After all that, after that he broke his word to me and decided not to finish the job by filing suit in Federal Court as he said he would. If you want an attorney who is competent and will keep his word...William Watkinson Jr. is not your man!

After contacting her for a consultation on workmans comp I decided to give her her $2,000 retainer fee. We agreed upon a $5,000 fee for her services IF it had to go to trial and not settled outside of court. Within the first 2 weeks of her being on the case nothing was done. She was supposed to fax me a copy of the terms and agreements upon me retaining her but didnt, only gave me a receipt of payment. After 3 1/2 weeks and her still not filing my complaint or proper paperwork I ended up having to talk to another attorney and retain him. I will be filing a civil lawsuit against Kathleen for my retainer fee back. Do not recommend her for any type of professional work

Back in 1998 I ended up in the hospital in a coma. While I was in a coma someone at the hospital left that "rubber band" torniquet around my right arm. The torniquet they put around your arm when they draw blood. Made my lose the use of my right hand from never damage caused by leaving the torniquet on my arm over night. Long story short. I ended up with Mr Peters law firm. At first he would tell me I had a solid case. His law firm is not known for taking small fry cases. Mr Peters was not proactive with my case, after 5 years he tells he the neurologist I was seeing was not board certified and his testimony has no bearing. I felt like WTH, why wouldn't you have advised me to see a board certified doctor to begin with? Then settlement conference day he sends an associate attorney who just wanted to settle the case. Permanent lose of my hand, I only grossed $120k, $67 after everyone took their cut! Mr. Peters could have done much better, but I guess I was a small fry.

Communication was horrendous with return call or emails taking over a month. Advice was also terrible and nothing in my case was resolved after a 13k bill. I’m still exactly where I started just with less money. I would have been better off representing myself. Co-counsel couldn’t answer very basic questions and just ignored my questions rather than finding answers. Huge waste of time and money. Overpriced and under delivered.

We hired Mr. Forrest to represent us against the IRS. A few days prior to the trial, he informed us he was seeking a top position with the Department of Justice (IRS Division). We felt he completely failed to represent us, beginning with not choosing impartial jurors. Mr. Forrest failed to call several expert witnesses we had provided for him, including another attorney that stated that our case was entrapment and could have proven it. Mr. Forrest informed us, he had forgotten to add these professionals to the witness list. We have since found out that the witness list is able to be amended. One of the defendants wanted to take the stand on her own behalf and Mr. Forrest closed the case before she was given that opportunity. He also was verbally abusive to myself and my wife after the trial was over. I DO NOT recommend hiring this gentleman under any circumstances.

Attorney Evans was hired by me from December 2010 to June 2011 to handle my divorce and child custoday. Dislikes: 1) Attorney Evans had very poor response time with returning emails and phone calls. I would send her e-mails and call her almost on a weekly basis about my daughter's erratic behavior after parenting time with her father and I got no response until a few days before we were due in court and that was only to pay for her services. 2) Attorney Evans presented only one event from my journal in court during my divorce, when she should have presented all of it. Things like my daughter's behavior becoming erratic. Her not sleeping unless me or my mother were holding her, and when she did finally go to sleep, she’d wake up in the middle of the night screaming about a monster whom she described as “Daddy,“ she would hit kids at school, she wouldn’t mind me, in fact she’d hit and bit me. At that time, I had no idea where my ex-husband was living at when he had our daughter because the marital home was foreclosed on. My daughter would come home hungry, hair uncombed, smelling from not being bathed, and she started putting her fingers between her legs and rubbing herself. Not of these things were ever presented in court by Attorney Evans. 3) Attorney Evans was very unprofessional and spoke to me as if I were a child if we did not agree on something. I specifically told Attorney Evans that I wanted my ex-husband to have supervised visits only because of his abusive nature. Instead of advising me on how to go about this, she spoke down to me reminding me that she was a lawyer and had been practicing law for 17 years. Hence I felt wrongfully pushed into agreeing to sharing joint physical/joint legal custody of my daughter.

Really?? All's that tells me is how imcompaten this attorney is that he can't make a judgement of his own and wants to know what everyone else says. Then after us ending the call he wants to call my number back trying to argue some more about what? I would never ever give this man the satisfaction of coming near a case when he doesn't even know a response besides ask you what did he say? What did she say? Attorney did not help with specific slip and fall claim he was hired for in Michigan on January, 2000.. Lawyer left claim a couple of years later instead of helping to obtain proper benefits and entitled benefits as should. Hired another attorney for WC benefits too, but he did about the same as well. My parent: health and finanacial conditions has gotten worse while received limited or improper medical treatment and support from doctors' offices along with poor government aid for many years. Employer as well failed to be responsible and correct their errors as needed to, they let my mother (since 1/2000) on SSI alone as they originally suggested instead of paying for their intentional mistakes, which based on what happened at work and their responsibilites is not a fair or right act at all. Both lawyers cared less to correct this situation as needed, and have experienced severe discomfort and unfair treament after filing for benetfits for logically entitled claims that should have been valid and entitled to be received based on what happened. Due to this among other issues, my personal and family health, fiancial and medical condition has gotten worse as well as to date received limited help and support!

Great record! Too bad she maintains it by refusing to secure justice for cases she THINKS she can't win. Ms. Andrea Hutting is my APA (Assisting Prosecutor Attorney). I was raped when I was a little girl from the age of 3 or 4 to the age of 10 by this guy at church. I am 15 now and I finally got the courage and told my family last year. Before school started she closed my case. I was very upset. I finally had the strength to talk to her about it today. She said that no matter what I say to her she's not going to open my case because she wouldn't be able to win this one. She didn't really want to hear what I had to say. I felt that she just wanted me to get over it. As an APA, if she THINKS she's not going to win, she will just give up and drop your case. So my rapist is still out there doing whatever. She really hurt my feelings today. I pray to God that she will change and be better.

Caitlin Kirby does not investigate or use the common sense narrative of if it seems too ridiculous to be true perhaps it is and even when the clients have proved to be lying repeatedly and openly because the title has been labeled a victim and what information has come her way about the alleged victim she prefers to look the other way because the less she knows about her alleged victim the better as far as Prosecutors office in Ann Arbor even if it puts a minor at risk !!! Because once they’re labeled a victim they can do no wrong as quoted from one of the alleged victims( I’m basically untouchable) when the alleged victim uses the prosecutors office to Repeatedly put a minor at risk and the situation becomes dangerous she uses the AAPD to intimidate the defendant. With extreme power should come with extreme caution but to this prosecutors office it’s just another slam dunk

I had a criminal case and we hired chapman. chapman did NOT keep me informed on our court dates. I ALWAYS had to call the court to make I had the correct court date. Chapman would get the calls from the court for all the dates that were changed. there were 2 instances where he called me from court and said get down here now! I said why court is not due for another 2 weeks. then he yelled at me and told me I was wrong. I told the judge I need a new lawyer cause chapman was mean to me and lied about not telling me about our court dates. Chapman did not work on my case at all. I had to hire someone else to get relief from this mess. I also took chapman to smalls claims court to win my money back as he breeched the contract and was neglectful, VERY NEGLECTFUL! I do not in any way shape or form want anyone to hire chapman!!! he caused GREAT anxiety and damage to my case!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
