In 2020 my 8lb 13yr old dog Chloe was attracted by a 50lb pit bull. She was rushed to emergency for 20 stitches on her back 2 staples in her shoulder 10 days later stitches came out n 18 staples put back in. Emilie took my case pro. claimed on Chloe only. I haven't had one return phone for for 19 months. Chloe will be 16 in January.. why??? This is rude n a lack of interest. Please tell me why I'm forced to contact my BAR association on a complaint.the owners lawyer up on me. Very unpleasant. No communication. Claim was summit 3 time to home owners insurance no help. This is Chloe claim not mine.its a small amount that started at 17 to 18 thousands. 19 months ago I was told maybe 12 thousands now. Where is there any comparison of her humanity for a animal or human respect??? I'm bringing to BELIEVE it's all a lie on her behalf. Please help me to understand. Any comments or recommendations could be helpful.

Terrible experience! Not only was he extremely combative, in the courtroom he wasn't much help at all. The only thing that the judge had said to him was, and I quote, "Mr. Becker your mudding the waters." You're better off defending yourself. That's basically what I had to do. I'm not exaggerating in the least, as a matter of fact, it was all recorded by the stenographer.

John is a very straight forward person, he's not afraid to tell it as it is which is hard for any of us to hear. That though is the reason I'm giving him 5 stars, he puts his heart into every case he takes and expects the same in return.

I'm going to make this short. I had some back taxes done that the IRS kept telling me they did not receive, and as much as I didn't want to bother by attorney I really had no choice. Every time I would talk to him he made it sound like he was taking care of things, but the IRS was telling me he wasn't.. frustration finally built up one day and I stop down and I was as nice as I possibly could be under the circumstances, but I guess I was fired as a client, and forced to find answers elsewhere... My opinion from experience very stressful..

I have been a client of Mr. Peters since the early 80's. He has always done a wonderful job for me with my business & personal taxes. He has also helped out in the debt we owed & in 1 case had IRS taxes forgiven due to their age. In other words, the debt was too old for the IRS to collect. He is a great lawyer!

We restained Mrs. McKenzie to help us with a eviction matter. She lied, did not file the complaint as promised and lied again. Stay away. Didn’t even care when I was firing her. Could care less. No ethics.

Paid this attorney several thousands of dollars. Several years later learning more each day about the law he put absolutely no time into it. Most of them do not. I have witnessed it. The county attorney, public defenders as well as paid attorney have already decided prior to any pre conference trials. They all sit In the same room as they run you through the mill chatting amongst each other. If the prosecuting attorney is wrong the attorney are afraid to go against them.even if your rights were 100% violated.

I waited 2 years for my jury hearing in May 2017. The judge was friends of my attorney. ..so I guess he felt comfortable telling the judge I was just going to settle. The judge never ask to speak to me....to see if it was true. Matthew tells me a complete different story....made me pay the person that was suppose to fix the inside of my house after roofers messed the inside of my home. So I have a incomplete home and no funds! I find out all this after all done I was played. The judge stepped down....and he turned him into the grievance board. That doesn't help me.....but might help the next person. I have the transcripts stating what was in fact done! I wish why he did what he did!!! Why.....and being his client in 2016 I should have been advised he was in hot water himself when he was a part time judge in Dubuque Iowa. Maybe I would have gone elsewhere and actually would have had my day in court!!!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?

  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.

Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
