I paid my retainer and was told the complaint would be filed shortly after that. After approximately 60 days, I didn't hear anything from Mr. Tarasek until my credit card was charged for some apparent work. No case filed, I canceled our agreement, and very little paperwork to show for the charges. I had to request an invoice which I never received and had to request copies of the complaint which I never received.

Recently had a custody and child support battle with the mother of my nine year old daughter. As biased as Minnesota Courts are against fathers, I went into this battle very discouraged already. Derk Schweiger was amazing in court, and I felt that because of his professional demeanor, articulateness, and sheer brilliance in court, the judge was able to see where I was coming from, and my life situation, my desire to better myself as a man, and my desire to be a father. The judgment was more than fair, and I was very happy that I chose Derk to be my lawyer. I have referred him to several people, and if need be, I will definitely call upon him again. He was professional, organized, clever, and not as expensive as other lawyers in the metro area. Thanks again! -Ryan Wagner

When first working with barb I felt confident cause she took the time to listen to understand my case or so I thought. After 3 -4 weeks it became clear she did not review anything I had sent her and did not have any legal strategy for my case. She will take days to respond to emails if at all, if she responds via email you only get answers to half the questions or more vague responses. I even got 2 emails from her that were clearly intended for another client on another case. I understand mix ups happen so it was not initially a problem. That is until I responded asking if this was intended for someone else and pointed out how the recommendation made no sense in my case which is why I posed the question. The problem is instead of just admitting to a honest mistake she tried to play it off as if it was intended for me. We of course discussed later on the phone where she admitted it did not make sense in my case. However, this is just one of many examples where what she says in writing does not match what is communicated verbally. I would also mention Barb was not proactive on my case and would only provide updates if prompted but they were so vague and lacking in detail there is no way to verify if anything was done. Ultimately she was happy to spend time on the phone saying whatever and letting the customer run up a bill but when it came time to perform anything beyond talk like filing appeal or motion or scheduling with the court or mediation ,etc... she did not do much and when I was finally able to get her to perform anything work outside of talking it took a good deal of arm twisting. The experience was absolutely horrible and it felt more like barb was fighting against me then fighting for me. She was the first lawyer I have ever hired so I was not sure if this was typical but I can say after procuring a new lawyer that it most definitely is not. My recommendation if you hire her is to get everything in writing and if you feel like she is not familiar with your case or not thinking about how to proactively prepare your case or just not living up to what you expect from your lawyer then you should trust your gut.

I wanted to share a thank you for the genuine commitment to me as I went through my divorce. When someone, like yourself, makes sure to understand a situation and provide counsel, solutions, and comfort it makes all the difference. I needed confidence as I was pretty beat down at that point and you helped me have that. It was important for me to let you know that. Gratefully!

Marvin Hennen Attorney at law was highly referred to us by “Wager, Falconer & Judd, LTD” thru our pre-paid legal services. Marvin explained the entire Bankruptcy process, what to expect and how it was going to affect us. He kept us informed and looked out for our best interests. He is very honest, prepared us for court and most of all he gave us peace of mind. After our Bankruptcy he has continued to help us with post-bankruptcy questions. If you’re looking for a lawyer who will represent your best interests, NOT the banks, then Marvin Hennen Attorney at law is your answer. Hennen Law Firm Fees are very reasonable. I would highly recommend Marvin Hennen Attorney at Law. A+ Service

Marvin skipped town when told he was working on our case. We had critical dates to meet which he missed. It took several days for him to call me back. When he did he left a message to call him back. I called a few minutes later. he had been gone for a while. Therefore he was not at the number he told me to call him back at. The bottom line is that he took our case with no intention of working on it in a timely matter, which was requested.

I retained Niecie M Strand after having 2 previous lawyers in my high conflict divorce. I wish I had retained Niecie right from the start, for she was given a tough situation with a lot to cover in a short amont of time. She went to work, and work she did. There were several times when Niecie and myself would be on the phone discussing my divorce, and she would have an email sent out to me, the Judge and the Petitoner’s side, ready to review, before we got off the phone. I know that sounds unrealistic but it the truth or close to it. She is Sharp, and on top of it in mediation, court or any situation that came up. Niecie also has the ability to negotiate hard on your behave, she’s not just a middle man. She is tough, Gritty, and will go to bat for you. I now set the bar at her standards if I ever need a lawyer again. I highly recommend Niecie M Stand to anyone in a divorce and hire her early.

Not only did my fiancé not get what he wanted! But they clearly seem to favor the opposing side! And to think we paid 3,000 up front for what ?! He didn’t even get what he wanted. And they’re asking for an additional 900$, do not go with Cordell! Was not worth it only thing that can happen is if they can actually give my fiancé his money worth! Doubt that’ll happen though.

Jamie Held collected her fee and made up a nice binder book, but did not follow through with filing the papers necessary for my trust. My biggest asset, my IRA, was never put in the trust. I’m gonna have to do that myself to make sure it’s done. I would not recommend her at all.

Jamie Held helped me and my husband create a will and estate plan. She is knowledgeable and thorough, and walked us through each step of the process. She was easy to communicate with via phone and email, and patiently answered all of our questions. Jamie took the time to explain the process to us, and helped educate us not only on the estate plan that we were developing now, but also on updates and next steps that we may want to consider as our family grows and changes. I highly recommend Jamie Held for any estate planning, trust, or probate needs.

I hired Tamara Caban Ramirez to help me with my application for naturalization. I hired her and I was her client. She stated she would write a letter for the application as well. She told me that she needed full flat fee plus the cost of the initial consultation to start working on the case. I paid her $2200 when I met with her in early September and then delivered to her the documentation, including my passport, money orders, birth certificate and the application. Initially, I was optimistic because she told me what she was going to do to try to help me. After the initial meeting in September, I couldn't get a hold of her. I would call, email, but to no avail. This lasted into October. The first week of October, she finally had her receptionist tell me she was getting the application out. I followed up a week later, again via emails and calls but there was no response. .At the end of October, I sent an email indicating I no longer wanted her services (still didn't hear back) and then again in early November, I sent an email and certified letter firing her again. The following day, she contacted me stating that she just sent in the application, even after I fired her. I was able to stop the documents at the post office because with all that had not happened, I felt I needed to see the documents. And they were wrong. Originally, she told me she was going to hire a translator to certify my birth certificate and it would cost $60.00. I discovered she herself translated it but indicated in the application it was a marriage certificate, not a birth certificate. She used white out on pages and used pen to fill in numbers--you could still see the mistakes underneath the white out. There was candy stuck at the back of the application. There was also no letter, which I mainly hired her for. Currently, I am trying to get back my passport and other documents and a refund. I also feel I should receive a majority of the monies back since she didn't do anything that I hired her for. She will not respond to any of my emails or calls. In conjunction with not doing what I hired her for and being lied to, I didn't like it that Tamara sent off the application after I fired her and indicated to the USCIS that they should contact her if they had any questions.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
