Peasley charged me over $30,000. Forced me to sign a divorce settlement agreement, behind closed doors. The agreement was dated incorrectly and notarized without the notary having witnessed my signature. The MSA was never filed. Peasley entered me into a child custody agreement (never filed) without my consent and charged me billable hours. Child support was based on joint custody, but my child resided only with me his entire life. Peasley did not specify any amount of my settlement which constituted child support. She told me she was retiring and may not be able to finish my case and then withdrew as my attorney immediately after settlement, leaving me and my minor son unrepresented, broke and disadvantaged. When I last saw her to retrieve my disorganized and partial files, Peasley was consulting with a new client. Certainly not retired. This attorney is not a family law attorney, as she did not represent me or my son to the best of her ability.

A very good lawyer and fair as well, I spent time with another lawyer who was not very productive and let my x walk all over me. When i hired paige she got things moving along. She was very fair to all parties and made sure that fair and eqaule treatment came from the other side as well because before paige that was not happening. Once again could not be more pleased if you can get her for your lawyer I would recommend you do so .

I can honestly say that Attorney Tim Sennett and his Paralegal Brenda have been very helpful with the everything that has been done so far since my mother passed. He took the time to explain everything to me and answered my questions without me feeling like I was being rushed, he made sure that I understood what I had to do and what he was going to. His Paralegal Brenda has gone beyond with making sure I was aware of what was needed to be done. They have been very understanding and supportive durning this very difficult time. I highly recommend him. Thank you both for what you have done thus far. Charlene Atchison

I hired Patrick to deal with an HOA. His sales pitch was that their law firm could do anything together. Unfortunately for me, Patrick could do nothing by himself. Patrick wrote and received a couple letters for me. Every time I talked to Patrick I felt like I was talking to a wall because he had no clue what I was talking about since he refused to do his own due diligence. Funny how I paid Patrick to do due diligence for me and he could not do it. After Patrick took my money he sent me a letter stating that he didn’t have the “know how” to fight my case, like he told me when I first showed up. That, my lying friend, is false advertising. The one star review above is absolutely correct. Patrick Kelley you are a fraud.

Pat was convincing in his sales pitch, claiming to "fight" hard for me and be available even if it was "A million emails or calls". The reality is that he rarely returned messages, if at all, within a week. It took my leaving a voicemail restating the promise he had made to me before he began returning messages, and that lasted only a week before tailing off once again. As for the actual proceedings, he was scared to go to court (I later learned why from others that had hired him). In the end, after 15+ years of marriage, I ended up with only a used minivan and a china cabinet that was my mother's, while she ended up with the marital residence, everything in it, more valuable car, everything in my garage, and everything else (including the kids) that was acquired during the marriage including my grandmother's wedding ring. Lastly (and this should be a red flag to anyone reading this), he sent an email that I needed to accept their offer and "get this over with" soon because he could not longer represent me due to a conflict of interest and I would have to represent myself if I didn't.... he was going to work at my ex-wife's attorney's firm.

Won a civil judgement against a real estate developer who is an attorney in Erie County. The developer/attorney refused to settle the judgement. This attorney was recommended to me. This attorney refused my request for legal assistance because he had a professional and social relationship with this developer. The fact there was an existing judgement should have warranted some assistance. There was a conflict of interest per this attorney but in reality the conflict was this attorney caring more about another bad faith attorney rather than justice.

She failed to do the job she was assigned to do. She didn't conduct an investigation and clearly didn't read several documents that she billed as she had. She doesn't understand the difference between a court order, a motion and an ex parte report. She doesn't seem to know much about family law, billing practices or courtesy. She was secretive and liked treating everybody as if she was entitled to order around. Delivered a badly written product after her time was up that does not have any validity since she didn't even stamp it at the prothonatory. Her staff will talk endlessly without allowing you to state your point and will interrupt you at every chance. She made a judgment without having met us after her paralegal's behaviour was less than desirable. She doesn't have detective skills or any common sense. She doesn't understand teenagers and parental alienation, and she likes imposing her own views of the law and never learned manners either. I have always found Erie to be a cradle for bad lawyers, but she turned out to be even worse than my last one. I can't find anything good to say about this person other than her office being in a nice location with relatively easy parking.

Mr. Ward may be a fine attorney, I will never know. He is a cash only attorney and refuses to give references. An attorney can provide references without breaking client confidentiality by contacting his previous clients, asking if they would like to be a reference, and if they say yes, giving them the prospective clients contact information. He absolutely refused. Anyone who refuses to provide references should be watched carefully. And he did not tell me when we had our consultation that he was cash only- he waiting till I signed the contract and sent him my CC info.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
