Dawn was such a help to me after my husband passed during the pandemic. She was refered to me by a friend who also lost her husband to Covid. NY was shut down. I could get no help from state agencies and courts were closed as were most law offices. Dawn taught me how to use Zoom and she opened her office electronically so we could have a virtual session. I am not of the computer generation, yet she made me feel as though I was in her office with her. She showed documents and explained everything. She took all of the stress away from me and resolved all issues to great satisfaction. Dawn- I don't think I could have made it through without you

Ms. Grosso was the arbitrator on a few different cases for my company. She was very professional and to the point so time was not wasted. She did give all of us an opportunity to be heard. While I did not win all of my cases with her, I believe she was very thorough and accurately applied the law. She was courteous to all of the witnesses including those witnesses that were difficult. She applied a very firm demeanor when necessary to keep some parties from "acting out". She should be a judge. I would certainly hire her as my attorney or as an arbitrator.

Dawn was the attorney for my first real estate closing when I was 20 and again when I was 43 She was compassionate and considerate when addressing issues that when beyond a closing attorney such as contracts with my movers. She explains things in detail. She is very nice and smart. Though very tough and stern when needed --just ask the movers who were on the receiving end.

During my initial conversation with Bill, he spent 36 minutes on the phone with me. During this time he shared a wealth of knowledge and advice. And he did so even after determining during the first few minutes that he could not be of help to me cost-effectively. This reflects upon his integrity, as he could have easily taken my money to do something that would be better handled by myself - as he suggested I do with the IRS. He gave me a thorough overview of my options and how to go about them most effectively, and how to avoid the problem in the future. I will not hesitate to call Bill again for any tax-related matters.

Mr. Hartt has been representing me now for 5 months and I could not be more pleased. He is very professional, knowledgeable and personable. I have contacted him twice about questions I had and he got back to me quickly both times. To find out that he had already taken care of my 2 concerns I had. Don’t know how my case will turn out but I couldn’t be better represented.

I had a complex non-disclosure agreement issue with my former employer and needed an expert lawyer to guide me through it. James responded promptly and provided an exceptional consultation. He demonstrated deep knowledge in this area, addressing all of my concerns with clarity and professionalism. His honest and straightforward approach put me at ease, and he went above and beyond by offering to assist with any future questions. James is not only highly competent but also genuinely invested in his clients’ success. I highly recommend his services to anyone needing specialized legal advice.”

It should be NO STARS. What bar admitted attorney doesn't draw up a written contract, give an itemized bill, or communicate with their client? Mr. Hartt needs to be honest, before he decides to respond or try to sue me. For defamation, libel, or slander.

After our long time lawyer, George Wolf, retired and returned our papers, he gave us Vincent's name as an option to work with. We initiated that relationship to re-do all of our personal paperwork (wills, power of attorney, etc.). He with his assistant, Nicole, prepared all of these documents, reviewed them with us, and maintains a copy of file in his office. This week, we had an unusual letter in the mail from lawyers in California, stating that we had a security refund that they would process for us for a 15% fee. Vincent reviewed this letter and advised us that we could go online and do it ourselves, which we did... at no cost to us.

Paid large upfront fee, was told verbally and in contract that I would be informed of any additional fees in writing and money would need to be added to acct to be drawn on. Was also told the initial upfront fee would cover the cost of what I needed done. He made several careless mistakes in a divorce agreement that I had to call about and was charges for those calls...waited in waiting room 30 min for an appointment that I was also charged for. Case was dropped in the middle, no court involvement at all and still was charged in the end another 1500$.... Charges were not valid and I was never notified of any additional charged till I dropped the case. He didn't hold his end of the contract and over billed me for bogus inflated charges. He also told me it would take a couple weeks just to draw up divorce papers and two months later I had to call and ask what was going on, which I was charged for. His excuse was training a new employee. He is dishonest and deceitful. Find someone else.

Place & Arnold handled the will and estate for my grandmother under direction of my uncle (her son). Unfortunately my uncle's desire was to prevent an update to grandmother's will that would reduce his portion of the inheritance, and Place & Arnold assisted this by delaying the execution of the updated will. Upon her death, Place & Arnold sent out forms to be signed by various family members that effectively agreed to relinquish any rights we had in the manner, they gave inaccurate advice regarding New York State law around family rights (verified by my own attorney) and even resorted to attempts towards intimidation when we were reluctant to sign such documents. Be very cautious when dealing with Place & Arnold; they have demonstrated questionable ethics.

We met with Mr Schell about rewriting our will. He took possession of our existing will and we waited for notification to go into the office and sign the new will. That never happened! We tried calling the office, emailing and writing that we wanted our existing will returned, but never got a response. At first we assumed that we was ill, or that some other event was keeping him from responding. After s couple of months and no way to contact him or get a response from his office, we gave up. We had no copy of the will he kept, snd no way to get it returned to us. A nasty experience!

Ex-wife filed for divorce in the middle of 2015. Went out looking for a lawyer and was ultimately referred to Mr. Krause. I met with him. I asked numerous questions during this meeting and had a lot of concerns about kids, property, financials, retirement, and so on. Mr. Krause had answers to all of my questions and provided information on how the divorce was going to proceed and what outcomes to expect. Ultimately I retained him as my lawyer. It is now approximately 9 months later and I can tell you that everything Mr. Krause stated in our first meeting came true. The process was exactly like Mr. Krause told me on that first meeting. The challenges that were faced along the way were exactly as we had discussed so long ago. The time it takes for a divorce to occur is long and there are many items which need to be addressed. This takes time and because of this there were periods that Mr. Krause and I didn't speak. This was not due to Mr. Krause, it was due to the process. This was my first divorce so I have no other lawyers to compare Mr. Krause to. I can say that he is extremely knowledgeable, fair, and "tells it like it is". If this is what you are looking for, then I would recommend Mr. Krause.

Was very poor during time of hire. Only time anything was done is when I called and complained. Asked for bill after nearly six months and there was not one prepared. When asked for bill a comment made "I can't drop everything and do that." When returning back inside I in turn dismissed him. A bill was finally ready in less than an hour. This was after walking in and commenting that I have been waiting for something to get done. As leaving he finally asked for the file to work in it. Extremely unprofessional and bad attitude after hire. During consult is respectful. would nit suggest to hire.

After hiring Mark for another legal matter years ago(which then he was great) I quickly retained him when my wife filed for divorce. He is very slow to return calls(have waited months to get in contact with him or his secretary. Gave me poor advice on more than on occasion, and my concerns with the lack of progress regarding the divorce or child custody have been downright ignored. My UNCONTESTED divorce has been in "limbo" for over a year now. I dismissed him as my attorney and hired another with an excellent reputation. Maybe he is great in other aspects of the law, but would not recommend him for divorce or family matters.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
